I have a pretty basic question: how do I create a good moor area? (As distinguished from an ordinary region of rolling hills.) Is there a good way to do this? Take the Evermoors for example. Is it just a matter of making it poor rocky grassland with fog? If there are grasslands surrounding the moors, how do I make them distinctive terrains?

Need a pic of what you are going for, but regular but less dramatic elevation change than rolling hills. Few/zero trees, mostly taller grass and/or low shrub.

What Kamal_ said. I've done several moorlands but only cameos for encounters.

I put in small ponds with low or no banks. Heather, it thats the look you want and rock strewn grass land.

I often use colour to show wetter areas which works quite well for this type of terrain. I can dig out som picture ideas if they are of interest.

I think a few low dead trees would give it a good look as well. Not too many, probably only one or two. They will give the eye a reference point for the scene as a whole.

Okay thanks. The FR maps usually show moors as a kind of muddy purple gray, so it's difficult to pick up what they look like. I'll see what I can put together based on these descriptions and some archetypical pics from the web.

If I may be allowed to toot my own horn a bit...

The "Causeway" area in Lowena is supposed to represent an area of moorlands that abuts foothills (with a highway running through). I can't say it's entirely accurate, but to me it feels right.

Thanks. It's actually for part of an overland map, so the look for a tactical map might not work so well. I've got that section of the map more or less built and it looks... well, nice I guess. Distinctive at any rate, and fairly believable. Per the advice above I added a lot of small ponds. I went over the area with a color brush to darken the terrain a little and make it more distinctive (and gloomy). I think once I add a few grass knots and some placeables it'll come more to life. I need to check if any of the placed effects will give it more of a fog-cloaked feel and still stay within the bounds.
