It seems every Bioware game has that character (who is ALWAYS the first one to join your party, it seems), who's an emo ***. This time, it's Alistar. So I once I had a big enough party, I never selected him to accompany him. However, when Riordan said I should bring him to face the archdemon I did, and found out he has gone one step further than being a total noob.
His primarily battle tactic is standing over 9000 feet away from your character, and not even fighting. When he is attacked, he just sits there until he dies. This is a MAJOR MAJOR problem, as see, my parties damage output goes to crap
Is this a bug or did Bioware decide that their worst characters should also have the worst AI, aswell? And does anyone else have this problem? If I find out there's no solution to this (I can't go back to a save before I enter the city), than I have no idea what I will do.
Alistar is broken, and not just character wise

Perhaps you have him in passive mode in combat tactics?

Or his Tactics were wiped clean. Happened to me a couple of times when I was making him work ranged against Flemeth and the High Dragon.

Yeah.. if your not going to directly control a team member you have to really make sure that their tactics are set and that you've leveled them well.. For fun I kept the team mates that I wasn't really using unleveled.. then when I hit around level 20 I saved.. then auto-leveled them to see how well the auto level system worked... It really, really bites. It doesn't focus on anything. It seems to just go down the line and give them the first tier of all talents available. Like Leonia42 said.. you might have had him in a weird mode.. I played with the modes a bit and found that default seems to work the best.. some like passive just seem to turn off the A.I.

I dunno I use Alistair all the time and he's now one of my killer tanks....hell, he killed my high dragon the bastard, stole it from me, AND Flemeth.....he works fine for me, although I have him on aggro? Never used passive maybe it is bugged.

He was on default, I switched him to aggro but that didn't seem to fix it

My first playthrough didn't have this problem, but last night I finished my second, and I had Alistair in my archdemon party.
Both him, Zev and Morrigan kept glitching, wouldn't move, attack, defend. I've been micro-managing their tactics all the way through, and changed nothing for the last fight, and yet they would not do anything. At one point, next to Al and Zev's main screen icons, their talents kept scrolling really fast, like the AI was trying to get them to use a talent but couldn't, so instantly rolled through to the next.
I managed to fix it, sort of, by selecting Morrigan and manually casting a spell, but it was still glitchy.
Ended up killing the thing on my own

How is this a major problem, you simply tell him to attack. You have to select the best target anyway.

make him defensive or aggressive works for me defensive he comes back to check if my mage is ok and attack if my mage is attacked and aggressive he just storms in there regardless of traps lol.
I found out a cool way to use lilana too switch to melee weapons when shes attacked at close range she backstab a darkspawn that attack my mage i was like she so cool.

I have no hate for Alistair but I did have this or a similar issue during the final battle.
His tactics were set to aggro and worked fine when the party was set to Follow mode (or whatever it's called). But as soon as I switched to Stand Ground(?) so I could give them different objectives without everyone following the leader, Alistair just froze; stopped doing anything unless I selected and personally babysat him. ("Hit the mean monster that's trying to eat you, dear.")
Killed my strategy, but I had to put Follow back on just so he would defend himself again.
