GFWL is bad. Steam is bad. Origin is bad. Any client is bad.

Too bad about Dark Souls. They shouldn't have bothered.

I've never experienced any of these kinds of problems with Steam or Origin.

Only GFWL.

So this is interesting and..sad.

From Software "having a tough time" porting Dark Souls to PC, frame rate issues remain

At least they are honest about it and I can understand why they aren't well improving the graphics and using GFWL.

I get the feeling they want to intentionally fail.  Ah well, I'll pick up Dark Souls when the price inevitably drops to about $10.

Same here. I can't hate them though because they admit they don't know what they are doing but I won't buy it at $60/$50.

I don't really care. They are all still DRM. And i've experienced numerous problems with Steam and quite frankly I get tired of gamers sticking up for DRM.

And I've got a message for From Software: CDPR did it right and you guys are whining about making a crappy port, but you'll 'make up' for it with extra content. F*ck you.

If you play Dark Souls, don't play multiplayer unless you want to do subsequent playthroughs. I personally feel it could easily take away from the experience of the game. Sure, I guess if you want to beat the game and you couldn't normally its good for players who want to do that...help with boss fights, but imo it takes away the purpose of it. So does messages about the secrets of the world.

In Dark Souls, you constantly come across new enemies and they could be absolutely anywhere. At any point, at any time, you could come across an enemy that kills you almost immediately, either because its 30 levels higher than you and guarding something, or it will parry your attack if you strike when its ready (landing a massively critical hit, often with compounded statistical bloodloss which means instakill), or a surprise appearance by something new. Even not taking a common level enemy seriously can get you killed, especially when they are in numbers and doing different attacks.

It gets dicy because if you're lugging lots of souls around, its a massive loss. Souls are your currency and your xp. All of it. You can pick them up again, but you only get one shot, and if you die, its all gone for good. Tonight I was carrying 26,000 souls around after defeating an enemy and I was so scared I put on my expensive Ring of Sacrifice...a ring that I found in the beginning of the game that will allow you to keep all your souls and humanity when you die, but will shatter the ring permanently. Luckily I didn't have to use it.

Some people claim the game isn't hard. It is hard. It's not brutal, but its hard. Only in spots is it brutal. Of course it depends if you know what you're doing. I'm dying less and less now than I did before, but I often will go sofar and return to the bonfire and advance out again, hopefully getting a little further. But you will die a lot your first playthrough. It is inevitable. All classes pretty much need to use a shield or be top of the line in dodging/parrying.

The DLC is going to be the first thing I have brought from Xbox Live in four years. I'm sure it will prove adequate enough. Predictions of the gameplay time have been made based on the number of areas and bosses we will be facing and I've seen some sites saying that the new content will be around 15 hours and others saying around 20 hours. I guess it's all down to how good the player is at Dark Souls. At minimum, I think it could give 10 hours but that's still the money's worthy as the DLC is 1200 MS (£10).

However what with new enemies and traps, I'm hoping it gives new challenges to Dark Souls players.

Eurogamer:Dark Souls PC Preview. Well I'm definitely not buying this game if these issues aren't fixed.

"There is bad news which could hit PC gamers pretty hit hard, though. While the frame-rate's rough edges have been filed down, you're still going to be playing at 30FPS out of the box, as widely rumoured. A graphics menu has been added in, but there are no obvious ways to raise the bar to the preferable 60FPS mark. In fact, options are pretty meagre overall on this front; you have the standard resolution and refresh rate settings (it does nothing to solve this), and also check-boxes to remove anti aliasing or motion blur. Barebones and to the point.

There's also something curious about the resolution too in that there's no change in clarity when attempting to crank up the settings. On close inspection, it appears that Dark Souls PC uses the very same 1024x720 internal framebuffer as the console versions, regardless of which resolution has been set in the menus. The option provided is for output resolution only; a simple courtesy to allow the game to play on most monitors, but the image quality will always remain the same. In short, PC gamers will very much be getting the genuine console experience here, right down to the pixel.

Gonna bump this thread back up with some hilarious news.

A member of the pc community managed to unlock Dark Souls PC 720p resolution lock to a higher resolution...in 23 minutes.
Source.

So will it be worth getting this on pc or should I just stick to the xbox? Community looks like it's going to be a lot more active for a while.

Well I am currently at the  Smithy guy after the boar .. Anyway .. What can I say about this port?

GFWL : I  have no problem with GFWL .. But I can understand the hate.

Resolution : .. Hummg .. Im a playing it on my 1680 X 1080 16:10 22 inch monitor and I have no problem . Graphic look good enough on monitor. Of course I have some letterbox which is common for a port.. But quite playable. I can see why they decided not to unluck the resolution because of the art style or game design ? It`s quite muddy and dark anyway. The game has a very creepy artstyle.

FPS : Dunno why they locked it at 30 .. Maybe because their software work like a fighting game ?

Texture: Lot of texture are washed out but, that something that blend well with the game atmosphere. Which I think was the point of those texture.

Keyboard and mouse support : Yes .. took me 45 min to be ',comfortable'' with my keyboard and finding every key.

It`s worth 40 buck imo . Even ifit`s a ''port'' it`s an outstanding rpg.

Game is awesome, running the res fix Cyberarmy linked and using my PS3 controller via MotionJoy drivers (in X360 controller emulation mode).

Keyboard controls are really bad. Like, REALLY bad. I'd go so far to say a gamepad is almost necessary. Other than that though, it's a very solid port. Had lots of action in the undead burg and parish this evening!

Yeah, it seems controller is a must.

Edit: Anyone tried PvP? How is GFWL handling?

What is the superiority of a Gamepad over a Keyborad?

- You need to hold the superlight pad, but the keyboard is on the table.
- Most gamepads are too small ... your fingers will be tired very soon!
- There is lots of buttons on a Keyboard. There is around 12 on a Gamepad and that's enough!
jk lol

Well if they can't transfer a game to PC. It's their fault.

In what way?

Just indescribably bad. It has by default, JKLIO keys to control the camera, some other random **** to attack, Q activates items in the game world, End brings up the main game menu, Esc does nothing, it's just a complete mess. Oh and the left mouse button attacks, the right mouse button closes windows and backs out of menus, you drag the mouse around to pivot the camera but the game doesn't take focu and hide the cursor so you have you Windows mouse arrow flying all over the screen while trying to play. It's just really, truly bad. It would be worth it to get one of those $20 logitech gamepads if you have nothing else, and are really committed to picking up Dark Souls. You can rebind everything, but it's such a rat's nest of random nonsense default keybinds with no apparent logic that I felt my brain cells dying while I was trying to figure it out. Then I just plugged in the PS3 controller and off I went without further trouble.

Keyboard controls aside, the game is brilliant. Gamepads handle the game flawlessly.

Oh and to the other person who asked. GFWL seemed to think my Xbox live account didn't exist, but once I got it sorted (I had to create a new profile with my regular, pre-existing credentials--who the hell knows) I was live and the servers (peers, I guess) seem pretty hopping. I had a bunch of co-op action in Undead Burg last night, which is basically the first low level area of the game.

Zweihander bandit! Same kit I started with!

If you can get past the dragon on the bridge, there is a Claymore. It's nice; handles much like the Zwei, but it's a bit lighter so easier to wield one-handed with a shield if you need to turtle up.

Indeed.  Took one look at them at the controls menu and just said "screw it" and plugged in a game controller.  And getting the game to recognize my x360 wcontroller was a bear as well.  All my other games switched seamlessly to it no problem.  I'm shocked that the pub shipped this game as is.

For anyone having issues with fps and controller recognition this thread was helpful:
http://forums.steamp...d.php?t=2903653

All the annoying wtf crippling issues aside, oh my god this is a great game.  Love love love the combat, and the fact that to do well you actually have to pay attention and be a lot more deliberate in terms of how you pull, when to attack, defend, counter etc.  It's just superb.  If I didn't think my x360 was on its last legs I would have bought the x360 copy instead.  Was sort of put off from getting it at the time by the reports of its difficulty level.  Made a Knight (it sounded good to me) and just had a blast bungling around.  Also went around the first hour or so going "my kingdom for a bow...projectile...any kind of ranged pull."  Only died twice in first four or five hours of play--I was expecting to die a lot more haha.  Have no idea what I'm doing really in the game and avoiding walkthroughs at the moment, but I'm enjoying exploring the game and it's mechanics immensely.  It's good stuff, warts and all.

For anyone considering the game on pc, I'd wait for a steam sale to get it ...oh, and a controller is a must. M/KB setup is just too atrocious and unwieldy for the job.

Ugh, bad news about the graphics and the controls. The game may be great, but if they don't step up and fix the issues there is just no way I can support this.
