I don't see any 180s here. He says we'll be able to talk to companions "whenever", but he's not saying "wherever."Sacred_Fantasy wrote...
This ... is so unexpected, I wonder if this is the same Mike Laidlaw who wouldn't go back 180 degree.
And we still have the voice.

This actually started back in Dragon Age: Origins,. When you had to tell people, you were a Blood Mage to get a response. Did you not see the blood gushing before I cast my spells?CommanderJessica wrote...
Oooh I'm more excited about how specialisation will impact story.
I know a lot of players wanted people running from their blood mages in fear.
After hearing our feedback for DA2, I really think DA3 will be amazing.

I think hoping for a toggle or something is the best we can do. Hopefully they implement some way of viewing full lines before saying them at least. Looks like the decision is very final.
But, I'm not unreasonable. I just hope the compromise is workable.

yeah, but.... will we ever find out just what Flemeth is? she is the most intriguing character in the entire DA universe
Have you been reading the Dark Horse comics? Without spoiling anything it appears at least some questions about Flemeth are heading towards being answered there.

Mike also mentioned several locations to visit - larger map from last year PAX. I think it would involve a lot of traveling. Therefore, most of our conversation with the companions would take place on the road, He also mentioned "fireside chats". I assume it's something like DAO's camp. Therefore, I don't think there's any issue wih "wherever". At least we can talk more with our companions than having to rely solely on information based on party banters.Sylvius the Mad wrote...

As for the voice, I don't expect much. We already know BioWare would not go back to silent protagonist. I remember David Gaider mentioned something about implementing emotion to dialgue options. And with Mike Laidlaw adding more clarity and predictable to dialogue wheel, I thinks it's a fair compromise and a good direction.
But you are right. We need to see how the voice works first So I remain cautious until we see it with our own eyes.. .

Everything sounds great so far, except the voiced protagonist. I actually dont hate the idea itself with a voiced protagonist (even though I still prefer silent if I can choose), but because it seems to affect the game in other ways, like the dialogue becoming simplified, and the number of possible conversations decreases.

I thought the whole "fireside chats" was a term he'd coined to suggest that it would be similar to the ones in DA:O that did actually take place in camp, but not necessarily in a camp for DA3 as such. Either way I'm intrigued to see what they come up with this time round.

And for those of us who've kept him alive, we'd like some conclusion to his story. If they're not giving us Hawke's story conclusion in playable form, they can at least give us a cameo/epilogue with our choices factored in. Easy peasy, and for everyone who killed Anders, different epilogue. Simple stuff.

I hope they don't mess up with my import save because of that. - Like Zevran. Killed him twice at Origins. It's not my fault. He appeared very late and very close to landsmeet already, I didn't have enough time to gain his firendship and I don't appreciate a traitor as my companion.katiebour wrote...

Isabela is different story because my former character and Leliana had threesome with her.
Beside, she is a rare rogue pirate with the golden heart. Not a typical backstabbing murderous archtype rogue like both Leliana and Zevran. Still, I wouldn't want to romance her. It's just for pleasure business.

I just hope they do not make the mistake of looking for a gimmicky twist to tack on to the end of the game...like they did with Anders at the end of DA2
I notice Maria Caliban has changed her avatar again...our Queen of Snark is very temperamental....

This does give some hope because some the ideas mentioned are part of my main gripe. I hope it's not another PR empty talks though.
He only said they wouldn't do a 180. He didn't say they wouldn't look back to the past at all. His stance has always been that they'd like to marry the good parts of Origins with DA2 and move forward, while listening to fan feedback. I don't understand how people are reading this "we won't go back 180 degrees" as "we are going to entirely abandon the gameplay of Origins and ignore the past completely."
The changes that they implemented in Legacy were really, really good, and it showed that they are willing to listen to and implement fan feedback. I hope they keep going in that direction. As much as I loved DA2 I did prefer many of the gameplay aspects of Origins, so hopefully they'll keep tweaking the system based on what worked and what didn't work.

"I think the big key is to not adjust 180 degrees again, because we've done this. I think, as a team, we're quite happy with what we've done with Dragon Age II, and this is establishing a solid foundation that keeps a lot, in fact almost everything I want to keep about Origins, but still has tons of room to grow and, frankly, a more viable future for the franchise. It's one that's more sustainable because we brought the world to a place that's inherently more interesting than 'Yay, we beat the Blight. Good for us!'"
I'm one of the first few people who praise Legacy ( and I'm one of those people who hate DA 2 ) after it was released. I applauded BioWare for the changes they did to Legacy. But Legacy cannot fix the main problem I have with DA 2 like Frame Narrative ( I know they're going to remove this for DA 3 ), Hawke's as PC ( I know they have some idea to implement Character Agency and Player Agency ) , Paraphrase system ( I know they are working on new bits to add more clarity/predictable to dialogue wheel ), Limited interaction with the companions ( I know there's idea to allow player to talk as much as they want with the companions at "fireside's chats" ) etc...Brokenmellcifer wrote...

I like the ideas so far but how they implement those ideas is another Issue Just like they wanted to show how time evolve through space regarding the decision behind single city like Kirkwall a year ago. The idea was grand but the execution was poorly done. So this is what concern me and I think most of us. Some may concern ME 3's influence on DA 3 but I don't know much about ME 3, therefore I can't comment about it.
I guess we'll have to wait and see how it goes first.

Agree 100%. I liked the gameplay changes in Legacy, specifically how they got rid of the waves of enemies. It felt more tactical and was more challenging overall. But I totally agree with your other points, especially about character agency and player agency. I loved the DA2 storyline, especially the idea of the falliable hero who, despite his/her best efforts, could not keep the inevitable mage/templar conflict from occurring. That was interesting. But Hawke never really felt like *my* character the way that my Warden(s) did. I felt like I was playing someone else's character, and just making aesthetic and superficial choices along the way (such as class, tone of responses, etc.) instead of actually building the character through meaningful actions and decisions. I also disliked the framed narrative, and I very much missed the epic scope of Origins. And I really missed companion interactions, especially since one of the loading screens for DA2 said to keep returning to your companions and they'd have new things to say. I did keep returning, hoping new dialogue options would pop up, but there was nothing outside of scripted encounters. I wanted to just snuggle Anders, damn it
Re: the 180 thing, good point. What I take out of that is that (I hope) they're not going to abandon the DA2 combat style entirely, though. I hope for a hybrid of the two. I liked the fast pace in the second game, but Origins was more tactical and interesting, and the fights were far more challenging. This was why I loved Legacy so much, because they introduced some tough enemies and forced me to use my team's abilities to their full advantage. On vanilla DA2, I just set up the tactics ahead of time and then wound up playing it almost as a solo game, mostly ignoring the rest of my squad. I'd like the tactical challenges of Origins, but the smoother, slightly faster combat of DA2.
Also I would like to be a dragon

Good.Q6: Will we see more class-specific stuff? Mage only storylines, etc.
A6: Yes. In general, more exclusive content based on how you play / choices you make on all fronts.
A6b: Considering more story impact for specializations, for instance. (Blood Mage, especially.)
( Especially about the Blood mage, yes, you know that, Mike.
