For me yes, but purely because of my expectations being so high.

Although in fairness, I don't think they were 'too' high.

I expected consistently great storytelling, massive amounts of character interaction, and lore building, with some awesome space exploration, memorable villains and a boombastic, highly satisfying ending that rewarded me for playing well and being a completist, all while being bigger and better and more polished than what came before.

You know, a standard Bioware game.

And it failed on every count. Well not the being more polished thing. It really is a very good TPS now.

Not only that, but the ending was so mind numbingly bad it retroactively tainted the two previous amazingly good games, and destroyed the meticulously crafted and incredibly deep universe while it was at it.

It's like meeting the girl/guy of your dreams, they're stunningly hot, and amazingly fun and smart, into all the things you are, and only get more hot and awesome as your relationship goes on. You have 5 years of absolute joy, get married, then suddenly on the honeymoon they stop putting any effort into anything, barely talk to you, and stop washing. Sure, there's still amazingly good sex, and when they talk to you its still a great conversation, even if hey dont give you many oppurtunites to speak, but you can't understand why they've suddenly seemingly stopped caring as much as they used to.

And on the last night of the honeymoon, during sex, they spend the entire time not really paying attention, only to turn to you at the moment of climax, look you in the eyes, say "I never loved you", before crapping themselves all over you and dropping dead from a stroke.

That's Mass Effect for me.

It's still been a fun journey, but it's forever tainted by the destination.

So yeah, most disappointing about sums it up I'd say.

Absolutely not. 99% of the game was fantastic, probably a 9.6/10 in my opinion. And I'm not willing to forget what a great time I had getting TO the ending just because I hated the ending. And I hated it because it was insufficient and poorly executed, not because it was root canal or anything even close to it.

I'm guessing the many of the same people who say that ME3 was the most disappointing game of 2012 are the ones who are willing to say things like "Obama is a communist dictator" or "OMG I have a pimple, I'm the most miserable person on the planet."

Perspective, people, perspective.

Problem one.  You just mixed a video game with politics. Thats a no no.  Problem two.  Obama is a pretty bad president, and while he may not be a dictator (although one could argue since he just signed a bill putting limitations on the first ammendment), he certainly does support radical socialism ideals that have been tried and failed.

For those who think the ending doens't matter compared to the journey, the ending reflects the journey.  Tell that to the people on the Titanic.

Persepctive, man, perspective.

Pretty easily, yes. I was super hyped for it and even preordered the CE. Lo and behold, I recieve an unfinished game with the most garbage ending I have ever seen. Thanks again for that, Casey.

Disappointment is always calculated in anticipation scale. They were telling a lot of game that never happened its just a shadow of what they promised players to give. They offered us game in which choice you do matter but gave us game that ur choices doesn't matter at all

It's actually the most disappointing game of all time for me, even more so than God of War 3.

Oh definitively, the thing that if different with ME3 is the amount of hype, hope, and promises that were built up around it not just in 2011, but since ME1 released. It squandered that, and for that, it'll always be my most disappointing game of 2012... maybe ever.

I think Mass Effect had a bigger hype surrounding it, and had the furthest to fall because of it.

No way. Plenty of games were more disappointing than ME3 for me (and I WAS a little disappointed by ME3).

Kingdom of Amalur, Max Payne 3 and Silent Hill:Downpour just off the top of my head.

In my opinion, the game had some disappointing factors but it did others brilliantly.

Likes:
Story (up till the last ten minutes)
Main Missions and Side Missions (by side missions I mean like the one with Jack)
Graphics
Enemies
Multiplayer

Dislikes:
Ending
Enemy Variance
Only 6 N7 Missions
Assignments were not varied and didn't involve much

Overall I would say that Mass Effect 3 wasn't the most disappointing game of 2012 but it had the potential to be the best game of 2012.

I have to say yes. It may not really be most dissappointing game of 2012, but it is only game that has been released this year and I have played. Even then it was pretty good game not as good as I expected even if I ignore ending, but still good.

Without a doubt yes. Between the complete removal of the ME2 gang as squadmates, awful eavesdrop, scan and fetch sidequests and complete bungling of the final push to "take back earth" I have never been as disappointed in a game. It's such a bummer that I'll be skipping preorders on all future EA titles.

ME3 is a fantastic game up until the last 5 minutes. It is completely stupid to call it a disappointment given how much it does well. The ending DID NOT ruin the entire game, or the series as so many have outlandishly claimed.

Wow...just wow. Have anger issues? Intelligence isn't define by persepective or opinions of a game. My opinion of the game is it is a disappointing game which is not to be confused with "bad game". Read the first paragraph of the OP and not just the title which I am guessing that is all you did. Amazing how someone's post can tell a lot about there persepective of the world.;)

I agree, it's not a bad game exactly. It's good...just not great, and certainly not "epic". If it was the only game in the series...it would have been a fine game, with an unoriginal ending that was basically stolen from another game and then modified a bit...then lied about pre-release. So a bit disappointing? Sure. But probably not the most disappointing game of the year.

There was a ME1 and a ME2 however.

And ME3, the final chapter of that established narrative pretty much ignored those previous games completely. The game was again dumbed down further than what ME2 did. The side missions were ridiculously over-simplified. Much of the story content wasn't even part of the game itself.

There were some very well done moments in the game, and the voice acting was amazing, but overall, it was lacking from beginning to end. The shooting bits and powers were nice, so instead of a RPG with action elements, it's become an action game with some small vestiges of RPG elements. That alone makes it a big disappointment (although I will concede that people who don't like RPGs much would probably love the game)...couple that with the lies, the over-hype, and the clear and obvious selling out that occurred, and I have to agree a bit with the OP.

They dropped the ball with the ending, but this is still the best game of the year to date. And I'm optimistic that the Extended Cut will fix the story up to where it should be in terms of properly resolving the Shepard trilogy, even if some people remain unsatisfied with the nature of it.

ah you americans and your strange views of politics. It's funny to say the least. Anyways on topic I would have to say that yes it is one of the more dissappointing games out there and might take top stop, unless halo or God of War takes a dive.

On the plus side I believe many games have been pushed back thanks to the whole ME3 debacle so at least something good may have come out of this.

The game is just a game. A lot of games have completely broken main features (like story in ME case).

But for me, it's BioWare itself that has been the most disappointing thing 2012.
All the hype based on lies, the lies about "From Ashes" and it's monetization, the poor handling of the backlash, the silence. Just the general breaking of trust that has been build over decades.

There arent many great trilogies that flop in the last 10 minutes. What happened in ME3 is definately unprecedented in that sense.

yep it was the worst by a long shot, the many flaws of the game and travesty of an ending make it my dissapointment of the year and i dont need to wait untill the end of the year either as i know i'll say the same then. Game was just rail roaded crap albeit with 1-2 standout moments of joy.
