Although in fairness, I don't think they were 'too' high.
I expected consistently great storytelling, massive amounts of character interaction, and lore building, with some awesome space exploration, memorable villains and a boombastic, highly satisfying ending that rewarded me for playing well and being a completist, all while being bigger and better and more polished than what came before.
You know, a standard Bioware game.
And it failed on every count. Well not the being more polished thing. It really is a very good TPS now.
Not only that, but the ending was so mind numbingly bad it retroactively tainted the two previous amazingly good games, and destroyed the meticulously crafted and incredibly deep universe while it was at it.
It's like meeting the girl/guy of your dreams, they're stunningly hot, and amazingly fun and smart, into all the things you are, and only get more hot and awesome as your relationship goes on. You have 5 years of absolute joy, get married, then suddenly on the honeymoon they stop putting any effort into anything, barely talk to you, and stop washing. Sure, there's still amazingly good sex, and when they talk to you its still a great conversation, even if hey dont give you many oppurtunites to speak, but you can't understand why they've suddenly seemingly stopped caring as much as they used to.
And on the last night of the honeymoon, during sex, they spend the entire time not really paying attention, only to turn to you at the moment of climax, look you in the eyes, say "I never loved you", before crapping themselves all over you and dropping dead from a stroke.
That's Mass Effect for me.
It's still been a fun journey, but it's forever tainted by the destination.
So yeah, most disappointing about sums it up I'd say.
