I hope Dragon Age 3 shows us more of these beings. There was only one half-elf in Dragon Age 2 and he was that mage gueezer. Surely there should be more though? Is it uncommon in DA lore for elves to join up with humans to produce offspring? I'd imagine it'll be more uncommon for humans and dwarves or elves and dwarves though but elves and humans? It sounds more likely.

I mean surely there's more than one half-elf walking about in Thedas. If not then this lone half-elf needs his own game because he must surely be epic and unmatched in badassery to be the only one of his kind.

It's not common but it does happen but I remember correctly Elf + Human = Human. So the elves tend to frown on it and Dwarf and Human you get a shorter then average human and maybe a bit stocky.

David Gaider went over this like a year or so ago.

There are no biological half-elves in Thedas. Sure a half-elf may have a lithe build and larger eyes, but she's human through and through.

Half-dwarves I'd like and are possible.

That's actually something that I've been thinking about recently. Origins implied that elves aren't a separate race from humans so much as slightly shorter, thinner, pointy-eared humans. If you think of them as people with recessive genetic traits, it makes sense that children of mixed unions would inherit the "dominant" traits and so appear human. Similar with dwarves. (At least, that's how I viewed it.)

However, since DA2 re-pushed the idea that elves (and dwarves) really are a separate race from humans, it no longer makes sense that children of mixed unions would appear only human. Since they are no longer humans with recessive traits, they should have dominant traits of their own, that should show up on their mixed offspring. (However small.)

The way I see it, DA3 should either make their elves like they were in the first game or else start introducing half-elves and half-dwaves. They can't have it both ways. (Separate literal races but no racial features on mixed children.)

Half-Kossith, half-Human would be cool. A human build with horns. It'd look like a desire demon.

I wonder how would a Kossith and Elf hybrid look, probably like e reggie Kossith lol. Anyway I was wondering if maybe Humanoids on Thedas have a common ancestor or something.

Feynriel

I suppose if a male dwarf warden did the DR, the OGB would be a half-dwarf.

David Gaider said on the forum once that elven-human children are always human because of magic, not biology.

My guess is that Tevinter put a curse on the elves when they enslaved them. A last insult if you would

Magic? Huh. There goes my theory.

(Why don't they explore that in future games then? I'd play the hell out of that!)

All I know is a half-Elf/half Dwarf would probably have the most beautiful beard you ever did see LOL.

Uh, the wiki says he's human, so I don't know what you're getting at....

Gaider's gone on record to say that anyone with an Elven parent and a human parent is human. Elven traits may make them look like they're a half-elf, but they're human because of some sort of magic and not genetics like one would assume as was stated above.

Danarius has the same pointy-ish ears as Feynriel -- implying he's also the progeny of a human and Elf -- but he's a human. Made evident by his beard-of-creepiness.

They may have wanted to make it that a person with such a lineage ends up having more Elven-like features, but is still a human.

Why are half-elves considered fully human even when they clearly possess elven features? It doesn't look like David Gaider was couching his statements about half-elves with disclaimers about how this is just what the people in Thedas believe, so I'll take his word for it, but I'm still curious. I'd still consider first-gen humans-with-an-elven-parent half-elves. Maybe second generation humans-of-elven-descent just magically don't inherit elven alleles. But then, what if a half-elf (ykwim) mated with an elf? If that produced a child that looked phenotypically human, why couldn't that just happen in the first place? I'd like to see generations of rigorous half-elf breeding program to get some answers, tbh. Get on it, mad scientists and despots of Thedas.

David Gaider was, as has been mentioned, so nice to talk about this subject in greater detail - both regarding crossbreeds with humans as well as with dwarves:
