hell, surface ships had specific hallways on the ship where enlisted guys weren't even allowed to walk without permission.
I snuck through those hallways more than once. I never called the CO anything other than "Sir", though. We used to address the officers we stood watch with on the bridge as "Mr. (whatever)" but that's about as informal as I ever got.
i was sub fleet, so it was quite a bit more informal. hell, when we crossed the quarterdeck, we didn't even bother requesting permission to come aboard, just saluted the flag on our way across the gangway.
even when we were on watch, unless it was a formal report or acknowleding an order, we usually were ok to drop the titles (our nav was cool enough he didn't even mind if we forgot to salute him on occasion). still didn't refer to them as anything but their name though, even at our most informal.
but if the captain or xo where around, you jammed that stick right back up your ass and got formal with every officer in sight with a quickness.
you just don't risk playing around near the guys who control every single aspect of life aboard a ship.

Yup, that's why it doesn't really bother me. I reprimanded him for it, and he didn't do it ever again. The Angry One wrote...

Just saying.
Usually in critical times regs are strengthened, not relaxed. At least as far as military goes. Which makes a lot of sense.
True, but I'm talking on a personal level for someone like Vega.
I mean, what is Shepard going to do? Put him in the stockade?
And to be fair he only keeps calling Shep that with their approval.

You can reprimand Vega for his choice of words, if you prefer.

heh, the formalities and the drilling are designed so that when **** does hit the fan, you go into automatic mode, including the strict observance of all formalities. The Angry One wrote...

Just saying.
example: fire on a ship. one of the most dangerous things ever (worse than flooding). you'd think you'd drop the "sirs" and whatnot because of the adrenaline and chaos... but you actually do it without even thinking about it. you even refer to your best friend you go out drinking with by his rank.
your brain stops thinking for itself and runs off of the conditioning thats been drilled into you over and over and over again.

Besides he was formal on the titles and saluting back when it wasn't applicable because of Shep's stripped rank.

Just saying they appear to play a bit fast and loose with things beyond customs and courtesies.

Weren't there Marines in ME1?
That was a tangent on the Star Trek thing. I believe Ashley is a Space Marine.
Yeah... Technically, Kaidan is too, since he's now called "Major" and that's supposed to be a Marine rank equal to "Captain" yet he calls Shepard his superior officer and Shepard is only a "Commander" which would make some sense in reality but "Commander" is a rank that doesn't technically exist in the Alliance according to the original codex entries.
Somebody, somewhere, retconned something. >__<
In the real world a "Major" in either the Marines, Army or Air Force is equivalent to a "Lieutenant Commander" (LCDR) in the Navy. Which is one grade below "Commander."
So, Shepard would be his superior both in rank and chain of command.

I suspect Udina's hand in it, connects with later promotion to spectre and coup.BluKardinal wrote...

This bothered me. Maybe her new look has something to do with how she got the new rank? (I didn't like Ashley.)

To be fair Shepard is very well known.. and yes I think shepard has done some things we would call crazy. If my CO was very well known and has done some thing similar to shepard ( which I doubt ) I'd call him Loco, and for the record it's not Lola it's Loca
If you’re aware of this,
then you’ve effectively arisen what many would call a moot point.

I had a lieutenant whom got a nickname after he went out partying with my platoon one night. He woke up in his dog basket at noon the day after, so our captain was more pissed at him than at us.

not the sort of example they're supposed to set.
hmmm...
kinda like shepard getting ****faced on the citadel then waking up on the floor of the men's bathroom.
or getting ****faced on the citadel and waking up on the couch next to an infamous crimelord.
or getting ****faced a 3rd time on the citadel and waking up on the curb outside a nightclub.

Yes and no. If the unit/command you are in accepts nicks, then you call people by their nicks while out of sight of any officers or nco's outside of your unit; only come across this once during my time in. Most of the time though, it is not proper to call your CO or senior NCO's nick/cutesie/pet names. If you come across someone that does not tolerate such things, you could get strung up by your pinkie toe with UCMJ violations; respect up the chain is demanded by the UCMJ.

I thought it was also funny that Jack become an officer. It would make a lot of sense for her to be a civilian with the military. The other part that made me chuckle was the Pickett Style Charge in the final mission.
