Called him a "F....ng Psycho" to his face when he wanted us to do an All-day march, in just our boots, in the middle of a blizzard with temperature way below zero because he claimed it would make us immune to the cold.
He was correct that we got immune to cold, Ended up with several of us getting hypotermia and being rushed back to base.
The next day we had a new CO.

Now, Loco and Lola are a little extreme, but you definitely get the sense that Vega is someone who doesn't care much about protocol. And considering that a week prior, he was Shepard's personal watchdog, it's not that unrealistic. Odd, but conceivable! I think some rules probably change, too, when you're talking to someone you regularly go into combat with. That's a bond not easily broken, regardless of rank.

I think the dynamic they were portraying in the game was intended to be much more relaxed due to the bond of having been through hell together. The customs and courtesies can get tossed out pretty quickly with a close knit group.

I think one important thing that most people miss is that both Shepard and Vega are officers. Officers are often much more relaxed around each other, calling each other by first names, even using nicknames. I'm not an officer myself yet, but I am about to commission as one in a month, and am around several officers all the time.

I agree with you, among officers of the same rank, things are more relaxed; you joke and kid with each other, hit the beach together, work and play together.
But when it comes to your Seniors - let me tell you, after 20 yrs in the Navy as an officer, don't ever try it with them.
As Ferris Bueller said, "You don't want that kind of heat."

The mission: since we didn't start any rumors until our CO's said we did, then we started to talk crap about everyone
We had optional callsigs for all of our CO's during radio transmissions of daily C.R.A.P talk
True story
PS. Also I liked the tuchanka mission it was a blast

Serious question: Everyone here could come up with a better nickname than loco, right?
umm not really, shepard and the things he does fits "loco" pretty freaking well.
"Man you stood up to a reaper with just a laser pointer, Thats Crazy"
"You shot Mordin? Crazy man Crazy"
"You cured the Genophage? letting the Krogan breed uncontrolably? How Crazy is that?"
Etc Etc...
Shepard does alot of crazy stuff.

You could get a handful of those everywhere.
A few USMC recruits died a while back because of a hardass DI.

I've read quite a bit about the Navy Seals and other similar units over the years. N7 and Sheps crew seem similar to those. These guys are not weekend warriors who need a regimented chain of command to keep them from losing it during combat. These guys are professional soldiers, and if like the SEALS, they are all officers and more or less consider those standing next to them equals who have earned their right to be there, been vetted.
Everything I have read seems to reflect Vega, Shep and Garrus's friendly ribbing and rivalry. In the non fiction I have read, these teams seem to treat each other like a close knit bunch of football players or something, complete with nicknames, ribbing and pranks.
Sure if Shep was leading a battalion full of new recruits, that would be bad news. But Shep is leading a group of people with skills that compliment his, and who are his equals in their field, or at least as equal as you can be when standing next to a video game hero.
Now of course you wouldn't rib, prank or call a pencil pusher CO pet names, but a guy that fights next to you is a little different.

Like walking or driving around in a humvee waiting to get blown up by an IED... not very fun from my own experience.
Or having random bullets come flying at you and your buddies... still not much fun... shooting back, yes; getting shot at, no.
But if you're friends with the LT and NCOs in your platoon, ya you can get away with calling them nicknames. Sometimes.

Uh, this game is nothing like how the military works... so what is the point of this thread?
If they made a video game about what really happens in say the infantry, no one would play it because it would be too random and mostly boring.

True. And just generally having your hopes and dreams crushed on a daily basis... sigh. As soon as my time was up, I was gone, it was the happiest day of my life. I missed my friends though, but I sure as hell didn't miss the Army or Fort Drum.

I wouldnt mind if my unit would call me something. If you have a good team which understands itsself blindly and is more a family than a squad, I dont see a problem.
About that Loco/Lola thing Vega has going on, he explained somewhere in the game why he called Femshep Lola. Something about his sister/friend which was named Lola and didn´t take a beating from anyone, just like Shep does.

I was in the service, Served OEF, Spent a lot of time off base. There are nicknames among the Enlisted. My nickname was Shaft, along with bags, and teeth, were a few of my friends. Usually among the lower enlisted. We would not call any Officer by a nickname, because you just didn't do it. Don't know why, but you didn't.
In the Squadron we too had our nicknames, mines was Roach because my last name is Arocho. That was a name that our pilots and WSOs would call me by when I used to launch and recover them, even the CO and XO but you wouldnt catch me calling them anything else but sir or skipper for the CO lol.
