In your initial post you said that you installed the drivers for the card from both the disc and from Microsoft? Do not install the ones from Microsoft or the disc. Maybe you've already done it correctly, but here's a step by step on making sure you get all that mess out of your system.

1) Uninstall all video drivers (check carefully, making sure you get any control panels or anything else related to the ATI cards), and make sure the device is showing as removed from windows.

2) Run Driver Sweeper

3) Reboot and ignore Windows telling you about new hardware.

4) Run a cleaner such as CCleaner

5) Run Driver Sweeper once more, just to make sure.

6) Reboot and ignore Windows telling you about new hardware.

7) Install new drivers.

No matter what programs that I use to clean with or even manually deleting them, 5 ATI files never get taken off my system. Even right as I delete them, they automaticly reappear back in their folders.

C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\ati2cqag.dll

C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\ati2dvag.dll <<
C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\ati3duag.dll

C:WINDOWS\\system32\\ativvaxx.dll

C:WINDOWS\\system32\\drivers\\ati2mtag.sys

Okay, after running both Driver Sweeper and CCleaner in Safe Mode, and manually deleting those 5 files while in safe mode, and goinging line by line through my registry, I was finally able to get every last trace of ATI and Catalyst off of my system.

This time, when I installed my drivers, it didn't get an error and Catalyst was properly installed. I coulcn't believe it. I thought all my problems would suddenly vanish. Unfortunately, when I loaded up DA:O, the same friggen crash happened.

A crash in the intro video and with seek function in movies suggests a video codec issue. try delete /disable ffdshow if you have tht installed. ( you can configure ffdshow so that it is never used by DAO. UNinstall any video/audeo codecs you don't need & check that remaining ones are up to date.

Unfortunately, where I live, it's a half hour drive to the nearest place to buy computer parts, which is Best Buy, anything else is over an hour to hour and a half. So I'm stuck with a very limited choice on parts. Like XFX is the only brand of top end ATI video cards they sell, and although they do carry more than just BFG power supplies, those are the really sick one's,and I don't need an 850 or 1000w power supply, anything from 400 to 600 is BFG.

I'll take your list with me and head back there and see what I can do about getting something better than a 450.

Thanks a ton.

i highly suggest newegg.com for future purchases.  i purchase 90% of my parts from there.  best buy is way too pricy imo.  in the way of good, cheap power supplies, i have good experiences with Antec and Logisys.  you can get a 550 w Logisys ps for about 25-30 bucks.  I have purchases 2 of them (for 2 different machines), and both have worked great.  If you wait for a good deal, you can find some 600-700w psu's for 45-60 bucks.

Do other games create the same issues?

I had a similar issue with that ATI card on my childs rig, we went back to the store and exchanged it. Unfortunately, it wasn't the card, It was a real PITA..we checked everything from bios to Irq's and then some.

It's rough when prior to installing a GPU upgrade, everything works & runs well..no issues. Then you slap in a new GPU and  el crasho....SO..we end up troubleshooting everything.

Well..I took back the card and snagged a Nvidia card..installed and everything was fine.

I love my ATI cards on this rig..but my Son has a different everything in his...It's just how it goes with these new power hog GPU's.

I feel your pain...Things like this can have you rebooting a hundred times..un & installing just as much..tweaking bios..flashing bios...& much much more. If your BestBuy is near..I would just swap it for the competitors equal and slap that puppy in..I know that folks are loyal to one or the other..seems like our PC's are as well.

In either case..GL

***EDIT***

Yes...I see the PSU discussion & without a doubt...Upgrade & without a doubt..1000W or better. I'm sure each consumer will swear by their brand. If they don't carry what others encourage you to buy..COOLERMASTER is a sound PSU as well..But in either case...With a strong focus on delivering good power to the MB & it's componants...1000W or better is strongly recommended.

1000w psu's are pretty pricy.  He won't need that much power for one 4850.  550-700w should be fine.

hmm.... what os are you using, and is it fully patched?  Also, it could just be a bad card.  Might not be a bad idea to exchange it for a different one.
