Okay the cuttle fish was a joke but I had to have an ABC of criteria.

I don't think it's impossible for an 'extended cut' that's 3 months in development to achieve that. But I also don't know if it will be achieved or IF achieved make anyone other than me happy.

You know what would save bioware a lot of money. an regain my fandom instantly? Some honest talk and an unsolicited 'sorry'

Am I the only one who didn't particularly like his answers? It's like he was trying to nicely tell us that the bullcrap we've been complaining about isn't going away.

For instance:

We should just "assume" anyone plot important is still alive on the Citadel? It gets ripped apart. Why would we assume this?

The Mass Relays weren't necessary? Really? I guess Nihlus was just full of **** when he said "Without their (The Protheans) mass relays and the citadel, interstellar travel would be impossible". Mass Effect 1 pretty much made it a. If thing to point out how absolutely necessary the relays were.

So, they'll just borrow Reaper cores? Oh, I guess that'll do just fine until all of the ships in the fleet are overcome by Indoctrination. Why would that happen? Because we saw that a derelict reaper would still indoctrinate people because of its core, THAT'S WHY.

And then we get in to he discussion of FTL travel and it just comes apart.

Also, we interpret the destruction of the relays as fatal because of two reasons:
1) We see that the Normandy is being ripped apart by this supposedly "harmless" wave of energy
And
2) WE JUST PLAYED DLC THAT SHOWED US THAT DESTROYING A RELAY WAS CATASTROPHIC.

I appreciate that Weekes took the time to give a nice interview, but even his answers reveal that even he doesn't understand the games own lore.

And you wonder why they won't come on the forums and speak to us......

I wish weekes could come on here and clarify the interview. That would cut down on any assumptions we are making here about his opinions.

Although I doubt he would be able to, or at least be able to freely.

Seriously, this.

I'd rather hear it from the horses mouth, than some random person on the internet paraphrasing him.

Agree. Otherwise, this interview will be spread all over the net and treated like gospel. No one will bother that it was paraphrased and spinned into negative bias

It's already made a thread on another forum and nobody has posted the corrections yet.

General, can you still modify the original post?  Maybe add Patrick's clarifications?  That'd be cool :)

As someone that didn't absolutely detest the ending... I hated the way the PR spin was handled for the past month. This is the kinda talk I like though. Straight, honest, and even if you don't agree with the answer you can respect it. Someone should let Weekes handle the PR on this ending for a while because at least I feel respected as fan right now.

Aye, I totally agree.

I like the Bioware folks coming out and stating their honest opinions on the matter, even if I don't agree with them, it's refreshing.

Awesome, so glad this turned out to be true. See, this is how you should have been doing it in the first place, BioWare. Patrick, I wouldn't worry too much about how some of the answers came across, because this interview did more to help me regain my faith in the Mass Effect series, and folks like you being part of writing it, than anything in the past month of this whole situation.

How did the Reapers storm the Citadel? Why didn't they shut down the relays as per their original plan once they had control?

Originally we planned to have a cutscene of Reapers taking over, Reaper monsters punching buttons, et cetera. But we cut it, partially for resource reasons and partly because it disrupted the pacing. The Reapers didn't shut down the mass relays because the Keepers interfered with that.

What?

See, this is why we need more in-game explanations and why a DLC shouldn't be needed to understand those things. Why wasn't that explained in the game? The Keepers do "something new" in ME3, they interfere, possibly against the Reapers, yet we had no idea because of course this "detail" was never mentioned nor referred to, not even in the Codex.

Let me guess... "resource limitations" again?

god again....

in ME1 Vigil gives you a data that will give you temporary control of the citadel and the signal that controls the relays, and after that would corrupt the signal so it cannot be used again...

http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Vigil

So yeah, YOUR SHEPARD made sure the reapers can't turn mass relays off, THANK YOU :o

My God I'm SO aware of this.

Can you READ the question?!

How did the Reapers storm the Citadel? Why didn't they shut down the relays as per their original plan once they had control?

It MEANS once they have CONTROL of the Citadel. Do you know what controlling something means? It means you CONTROL it. If you control it, you CAN shut down the Relays. It means that AFTER the Citadel was taken CONTROL of by the Reapers they COULD have shut down the Relays BEFORE the allied fleets used them to get to the Charon Relay. What happened in ME1, what the Protheans did was to make sure that the Keepers themselves would not open the Citadel's Relay (NOTHING to do with the Relays network!). The Keepers would not be compeled to answer the signal to open the Citadel ONLY. The Keepers NEVER before interfered to actually shut down the whole Relays Network! NEVER. The Protheans only altered the Citadel signal! NOTHING ELSE.

The ANSWER given from that interview after that question means that the Reapers could not shut down the NETWORK of the Relays because the Keepers interfered with that, with the NETWORK of the Relays, which is completely NEW. The Keepers NEVER had anything to do with the ENTIRE NETWORK of the Mass Relays!

THANK YOU.

wait wait wait.. what?

That's the negative spin he was referring to?

Pretty sure I just grazed over those parts anyway.

I think we're both thinking about the same thing here, but we should totally SHHH over this right now for the sake of this thread and our <3-ners for Weekes.

People shouldn't treat anything any individual who works at Bioware as gospel regarding Mass Effect. It is a gigantic story crafted by hundred of people, and several have input into it's course.

Great read, and fully understand it was paraphrased and not 'everything exactly as happened'. Good just to catch some random discourse regarding the development of Mass Effect.

Are you always this negative...I mean most of your posts here are just downright depressing. You may never be pleased, but could you maybe lower the torch for a couple minutes. I mean this writer is our only hope for a better ending. Hope I didn't come off as insulting just wishing for people to not burn everything before its even on the grill!
Much love,
Camcon!<3

I'm a realist. I appear negative because that's the impression the ending left on me.

You don't just destroy the infrastructure of the galaxy and leave people to assume it'll all get better.
You don't just destroy the Citadel and leave people to assume everybody inside is okay.

And so on. The last comment just made me facepalm, because if I want to see Star Wars I'll watch Star Wars.
The tactics in the codex would look awesome in game. Come on, ships making FTL jumps to appear behind a Reaper then blasting it in the ass? How would that not make for a great cutscene?

Thing is he is trying to fix it. It's obvious he really didn't have much to do with the ending. He is trying to fix it. Can we wait until we see it to begin the grilling?

I'll stop the grilling when I can have my little blue babies/adopted krogan babies/cute Shenko babies. Without committing galactic genocide. In that order.

*shakes fist*

I'll make you a deal: When the extended cut DLC comes out, and if the destroy ending has blue babies, send me your Shepard's save file and I'll do all the endings for you, and then recut the ending cutscenes so that it looks like you chose another ending and still got to reunite with your team.

It's not optimal, but maybe you could accept it in your head :D

Wow, very interesting interview. This was something I have been waiting for since seeing the ending. Thanks!
Very interesting to see how much tension there obviously was within the team. That makes me more hopeful for the EC because maybe after the ending debacle the sensible voice like Weekes' will get more attention.
The one thing that really REALLY annoys me however is the whole point about FTL without Mass Relays. If 12 ly/day is really cruising (not even maximum) speed than the mass relays really were not important AT ALL, just a convenience. The previous games are then built on very thin ice, given on how often the plot stresses that without the relays we are basically screwed.

I think that is shame especially because the relays were one very cool distinction of the ME universe. Now we basically have a Star Trek with faster ships and less races.

BTW, ok, so much for flight but what about communications? The comm buy system still relays on the relays and without them, we are basically just left with courier drones.

Still, nice interview and you just gotta love Patrick Weekes! Best to make him a lead writer :).
