Thank you very much for sharing this interview with us.
The pretty obvious conclusion after reading it, is that the production was rushed because the rEApers assumed direct control. Most people suspected that already, but it is some good evidence for our suspicions.
The rushed ending resulted in heavy plot holes which contradict the codex, the games philosphy and even logic. Biowares writers now have a very hard job to do; they have to fill the above-mentioned plot holes with sense, without changing the ending to drasticly. I still don't believe that it is possible to achieve clarification without changing at least small parts of the current ending, or at least Shepards or our perception of them, but maybe I will be surprised.
If somebody can fill the plot holes with sense and by that cleanse the rubbish of the rushed ending, than it's Patrick Weeks and the other talented writers there at Bioware.

Some day in June this year might than be known as...
Saint Patricks Day:devil:

Why does EDI survive the destroy ending? This was never explained even in the interview.

My guess would be that since EDI is resident in her "Dr. Eva" chassis AND in computers inside the Normandy, that the mobile cerberus/reaper-infused Dr. Eva got low-level wiped by the Red ending, whereas the rest of her that's inside the Normandy, given that it only consists of human/turian/asari/salarian tech was untouched... at which point, she re-initializes and resyncs back into the Dr. Eva body. That's my theory.

Unfortunately, wasn't she programmed and created with the help of Reaper technology, if not even Reaper code itself. Am sure she mentions it when you ask about her cyberwarfare routines in ME2.

I'm happy to wait and see what happens so am open to either option, live or die, but just wanted to post that =]

So apparently these endings are actually not such downers, they just executed them so bad that it looks like we killed everything. Am I correct in this?

You are correct.

Presentation is key to making someone feel satisfyed, and bioware basically had a good desert for a great meal, triped on their own shoelaces, and sent that desert hurtling through the air and smacking the player right in the face.

Some can see this and say it was an accident and not biowares fault, other will be too pissed to care and they are right in doing so. Either way, bioware messed up and now their going to feel it in their tips and in their paycheck, probably for a long time.

Bioware, listen to this man's ideas. Seriously, listen to him.

On a somewhat related note, Weekes should be the lead writer for the next Bioware Edmonton project.

"Starflight will continue using conventional FTL"
My high school science teacher is /facepalming as I write this.

"Joker would never abandon Shep without a good reason."
This translates into, we have no idea, we'll think of something at a later date.

" You should assume that everyone plot-important on the Citadel survived."
So instead of showing that all our attention to Citadel quests meant something, we should just assume people are just hiding in cuby holes?

"We really didn't mean to imply that the whole galaxy had been destroyed. People interpreted the ending in ways we really didn't expect."
Bad writing then, you don't establish what happens to a system when a MR explodes and then not expect players to assume that is whats happening AGAIN.

"We just didn't have the resources to do an alternate for the Rachni mission"
And the fact that they played absolutely no role in the ending like was promised?

"We don't get a lot of feedback from the art department"
Really? Perhaps the artists should spend less time drawing camel toes, boob cupping shirts and ass hugging pants and work on something useful, like Tali's face!

i feel like if there was a Q&A like this to start with there would not have been as much anger over the ending.

True, but with Q&A like this in the beginning, we might not be getting this ending DLC in the first place, so maybe it's a balancing act of nature?

Maybe but i guess we'll never know, i just hope the dlc provides actual answers.

Anyone know if there's a non-paraphrased version of the interview

Weekes is awesomesauce.

Naw the interview seems to be a relatively rough 'recollection' of a well meaning fan. Sadly he did not make hard recordings while asking these questions.

It's a shame, most of his questions (though he misses a few points that many wanted to address I am sure) BLOW any of the crap that the zombies threw at the panel.

Too bad. In any case, this is better than nothing.

Thanks to the fan who was nice enough to share and mucho thanks to Weekes for a more candid (and understandably careful) interview.

Am I the only one who didn't particularly like his answers? It's like he was trying to nicely tell us that the bullcrap we've been complaining about isn't going away.

For instance:

We should just "assume" anyone plot important is still alive on the Citadel? It gets ripped apart. Why would we assume this?

The Mass Relays weren't necessary? Really? I guess Nihlus was just full of **** when he said "Without their (The Protheans) mass relays and the citadel, interstellar travel would be impossible". Mass Effect 1 pretty much made it a. If thing to point out how absolutely necessary the relays were.

So, they'll just borrow Reaper cores? Oh, I guess that'll do just fine until all of the ships in the fleet are overcome by Indoctrination. Why would that happen? Because we saw that a derelict reaper would still indoctrinate people because of its core, THAT'S WHY.

And then we get in to he discussion of FTL travel and it just comes apart.

Also, we interpret the destruction of the relays as fatal because of two reasons:
1) We see that the Normandy is being ripped apart by this supposedly "harmless" wave of energy
And
2) WE JUST PLAYED DLC THAT SHOWED US THAT DESTROYING A RELAY WAS CATASTROPHIC.

I appreciate that Weekes took the time to give a nice interview, but even his answers reveal that even he doesn't understand the games own lore.

The crucible probably burns out the central processing units of the reapers. Meaning any technology they had inside them can be used.

Also he might have meant they could be studied. Like Sovereigns cannon was used to create the Thanix Cannons by the Turians.

Also

Arrival ruptured a relay's eezo core, causing it to self destruct.

Crucible overloaded the relay's eezo core, causing it to burn out before the relay was destroyed. Meaning no supernova.

Could pikey1969 just remove his personal opinion on the endings from the OP already? Not only he blatantly plugs a link to his own thread but also further clouds and spins the content of Patrick's PARAPHRASED interview. Seriously.

BTW, ok, so much for flight but what about communications? The comm buy system still relays on the relays and without them, we are basically just left with courier drones.

I actually think that is one of the great missed opportunities of the game. Traynor says something about Rachni being able to communicate long distances if you save the queen. What if the end game cut scenes somehow reflects this, maybe Wrex (stuck on Earth) being able to contact Eve would stop civil war, without queen, Krogan dissolve into chaos again etc.

Maybe it got cut because it seemed to be foreshadowed.

I like it but even with FTL Comm Buoys couriers were still used to transport much of the requested data local planetary data centres or intra nets to cut down on the bandwidth on the system and prioritise more important use with fastest use.

Sorry about dodgy terms after FTL Comm Buoys, 4am and brain starting to resemble mushy peas, or maybe all this talk of pie and chips has got me a hankering for a pub meal and a Guinness!

Okay the cuttle fish was a joke but I had to have an ABC of criteria.

I don't think it's impossible for an 'extended cut' that's 3 months in development to achieve that. But I also don't know if it will be achieved or IF achieved make anyone other than me happy.

You know what would save bioware a lot of money. an regain my fandom instantly? Some honest talk and an unsolicited 'sorry'

I'd totally accept their apology. I'm not unreasonable. I understand people make mistakes....though it will definitely affect how I view Bioware from here on out...I've bought every release on day 1 since KotOR came out in 03....

However, let's be honest....the endings were a Monumental failure....Halo 2 didn't even get this backlash...why? Because it was the second part of a trilogy....there was more to come....the finale of the final installment of a trilogy should tie up all plotlines, answer series long questions, and provide closure....Bioware dropped dead at the finish line of a Marathon....they fumbled on the goal line in the final seconds of the Super Bowl....they had a brilliant run, just to choke when it mattered most....

The ending is only one part of a story....but The Ending of a Trilogy specifically, well, that can Make or Break not just the final installment, but all 3....the entire trilogy, tainted....this is not just true of videogames, but movies as well....

And unless this Extended cut shows all the consequences of our choices played out in atleast 5-10 minutes of cinematics, I wont even be mildly satisfied....unless that happens, then the Extended Cut just makes it an even worse failure....they get a mulligan....its practically a re-do

But....don't expect anything....why? Well, not that I have a problem with anything that's FREE, but considering Bioware won't be profiting from this at all, don't expect the Extended Cut to be lengthy or of high quality....

Expect some "DA:O" type epilogue....text b.s.....do you think Mass Effect deserves that kind of ending....do you think thats a worthy conclusion to a trilogy such as this?

....I didn't think so.

It may not be worthy. but it will give 'closure'. It will allow me to walk away merely disappointed and wary. rather than enraged and vindicative. Either way my wallet is currently locked but one way , the odds increase that it will stay locked or that it's contents will be spent in active competition to Bioware. The Failure of such a pottentially epic triology is theirs to own at this point.

Yeah I don't buy the conventional FTL, seems like a patch up after destroying them caused such a negative feedback. I always liked that there was some sensible way to get around the galaxy because just FTL x 30 isn't gonna cut it.

Hopefully no fans left, just those exploiting the situation. As someone has already mentioned, this probably would not have spiralled out of control if we had anything like this information to begin with, however, as mentioned, we now get some free DLC =]=]=]

muhahaha i will totally abuse this platform to plug my own thread. all that and my opinions regarding the interview is only a pargraph anyway. I don't see a reason to remove that unless enough people here feel opposed to it. I claim 'thread author's integrity'.

HOWEVER,

the interview itself is worded EXACTLY as I found it on the SomethingAwful forums.

Not to mention, I also added the Twitter quotes from Weekes himself in regard to the interview.

Slight problem, your arguments become nearly invalid when arguing with one of the people who hold omnipotence over the entire mass effect universe, and can alter the codex and the way the ships function anyway they like.

Other than that though, most of your arguments are good, though they will most likley be adressed in this upcoming extended cut.

Also, lay off the art department. Being a vidoe game artist is boring and lonley, you do tons of work and gett little credit becuase you aren't the animator, just the guy who turns concepts into tangeble things. Besdies, they more than likley added that in as a funny eastier egg and nobody caught it.

It actually reminds me of depry hooves the crossed eyed pony, except instead of well liked by fans and an innocent gag, it was raunchy humor that many take offense to.

This one feels like any attempt to provide a comeback to this masterfully delivered criticism would have a very low chance of success in any given social situation.

Same here! I am also glad they saved some valuble resources for multiplayer. I mean, isn't that what drew us all originally to Mass Effect - the multiplayer?

No, but seriously, Weekes sounds like a good guy and gave some interesting answers. Unfortunately, they do not brighten the ending at all for me.
