The whole "everyone is dead and starving!!!!" scenario was entirely hyperbolated by rabid chicken littles in order to exaggerate and over dramatize their hatred for the near-perfect dark ending.

Hardly. It was a pretty natural conclusion based on what we see in the ending and what we know to be true of the ME universe.

Why doesn't Bioware just do a Q & A on the forums, it would make a lot of people happy with no room for paraphrasing?

Because they are still working on the content and prefer to have most ideas the themselves instead of making more promises they might have to back out of...

They do not need promisses or discuss future content to calm a lot of people, facing questions like Patrick Weekes just to put a stop to some of the more negative speculations of the ending, may help promote the **** out of their EC

You might be correct, but their policy clearly indicates they prefer to avoid make content promises like this. Look what happened to DA2: Exalted March, they gave us many hints that it was coming and now they cancelled it...

Or rather look no further than ME3, and refer back to Casey's 'there won't be A, B, C endings' statement pre-release while they were still working on the content, and the PR sh*t-storm that followed after the finalized product got released.

That alone will make them wary of going any further than where Weekes has gone so far.

Also, he was very very careful not to comment on the Indoctrination Theory. He did not confirm or debunk it.

By the way, great questions. Thank you for paraphrasing the answers for us. Still, not sure why you asked about the cameltoe and not the god-child.

I thought the cameltoe was incredibly awkward and out of place and I couldn't believe anyone thought it was a good idea.

I did not have a script or any formal questions prepared. I just asked things as they came to mind.

Cmon - give us some time with the DLC, and let's try to avoid hatin' on Patrick or Jessica:P

Honestly, after all the valid and incisive criticism leveled at the Catalyst and his presence in the ending, why insist on keeping him around? 90% of what's wrong with the ending can be solved simply by retconning him out of existence.

Why not just answer this question directly?

Is your question about whether or not we are going to retcon the catalyst? The answer is no. We've already said we are not changing the endings, but again - there are many things that we *can* do without changing them.

My question is WHY you're so resistant to retconning him out.
He damages the ending in such a fundamental way that as long as he remains in place, the ending is irredeemable.

At least tell me this - are there any plans to attempt to make his presence in the game more palatable, either by expanding on the dialogue options or changing his role?

Sorry if I'm getting hopeful about this, but are you leaving room for us to speculate that you can work around the whole ending and how definite it is by adding closing plotlines/reunion?

Not really expecting an answer but hey worth giving a shot, thank you for commenting on the thread btw.

Indeed. And (this is @Ubergrogg) is probably also the reason why Jessica is deliberately vague about things. She's trying to keep people happy - that is, after all, her job - while at the same time trying to avoid saying anything that will be pounced on as 'officially confirmed' and 'promised' by Bioware. I have not envied that lady her job one bit over the last few weeks.

By the way, Patrick, John, Reid myself - we were all ready to answer those kinds of questions in dialogue just like the original OP. It was the whole reason we came to PAX. In fact, a lot of people may have gotten a bit *too* much out of me ;)

Either way, we met hundreds of folks - and we were so happy and pleased that everyone just wanted to talk and have some great convo.

All of us are feeling pax with a sense of...renewal, and we are ready to work our butts off in the months ahead.

Hope you all enjoy resurgence! <3

If you don't get rid of him totally will you at least change him from the child. The thing is out of place. It would be awesome if he was some sort of alien it would make it a bit easier to swallow...

Jessica Merizan ‏ @JessicaMerizan
@Ryuasiu @patrickweekes that was not am interview and it was filled with half-truths and inaccuracies. I'm actually pretty angry about it...

Well, he had the NERVE to admit that they had to do same changes/take some decisions for budget reasons... PR people don't want you to know this... :police:

Uhhh...what?  We all know things got cut because of development.  Javik is a prime example of that.  Jessica outright stated in her Reddit interview things were cut because of time/budget/etc.

This isn't anything new.

Sorry, I was just joking, not making a serious point. I thought the police-guy emoticon was clear but it probably wasn't ;)

Mike, ignore the strange people hating on Patrick. Patrick's boosted the confidence of TONS of fans. This is seriously a good thing. Don't let the trolls ruin how we appear to you. I cannot overstate the awesomeness of what Patrick has done with talking to us like this!

Goonswarm is a tiny part of SomethingAwful. Most of the SA community has never even heard of EVE as anything but a distant name and source of occasional, hilarious drama.

This conversation took place but please bear in mind that the 'transcript' you see here is colored by my bias and the faults of my memory.

This man should of been the head writer! This eases my pain a little, but still an alternate choice should be given or more specific choices and more clarity (like destroying reapers but sparing geth for example).

Weekes said those were his statements seen through the eyes of the person asking the questions.
I don't know what other confirmation you could ask for. In no way is it accurate, Weekes said that himself, but it's still the best PR piece concerning bioware.
Done by a fan, answers given by a man in the writing team, no pr people in sight.
Paints a pretty clear picture what is the other issue bioware is having besides the ending.

You know, most of us in game development would love to have all the time in the world to make our games, but that doesn't mean we put something out that we don't believe is quality.

As for some of this specifics of the questions...

Of course joker wouldn't abandon Shepard for no reason, and yes - let's not underestimate FTL here :) let's also not forget about quantum communication...or the incredible store of food rations that the Normandy has.

Cmon - give us some time with the DLC, and let's try to avoid hatin' on Patrick or Jessica:P

Another dev! *pounces*

I really do appreciate you guys saying anything at all by the way. And I hope you noticed how much hope is in this thread, that a lot of the others don't have... the ending's main failing was that it made a hard right turn then left holes open that we couldn't be expected to fill. To hear a writer push us in the right direction helps us.

Which makes us almost or actually willing to spend more money on your product, the cynic in my bones forces me to say, in case the bean counters really are sifting through every thread for hints. :P Okay, only From Ashes and only because the character's perspective almost seems essential to the story.

Though think about it, the joy of hearing Patrick, and also yourself, talking to us about where the game's ending might truly lead... has upgraded this game from a game that I'm disappointed to have spent $60 on, to a game I feel is worth $70. I mean it. I was literally in a significant depression over the ending of this game and not wanting to play it ever again (such is the effect of the confusion and lack of catharsis, though I may love this series too much, but I won't apologize) and now I'm excited to get my Liaramancing Paragade Adept and my Nomancing Sentinel through ME2 so I can get the other two endings ready to go for the summer.

And further bean-counting cynical addition: the game might be losing its word of mouth because of the ending issues, and it needs it to keep sales up. Keep on giving us some concrete hope, Bioware, and I myself will work to correct that, among others I'm sure.

I would just love if someone from Bioware could put up something of all the information that we (the fans) know about the DLC and questions answered concerning the ending, like recent explanations such as "no, the galaxy isn't destroyed." Having to scour the entire Internet for it all is rather brutal.

I think the more appropriate question is, what is the story you're trying to tell by adding the Catalyst?

Maybe so, but it's such a prevalent opinion on this forum [and among the most polished and incisive critiques of the ending, both here and elsewhere] that it stands to reason that BW should at least be amenable to the idea.

Ok I have an honest question for people, something I haven't been able to figure out:

Do you think the dislike for the starkid would have been nearly as strong if it took a form other than that child? Say it was actually a LI, or if you had no LI, a 'face-face' confrontation with your own likeness. It would have been a voice and image you were familiar with over 3 games (probably), instead of being 'dictated to' by someone with whom you had no real connection? Even if the actual gist of what was being said didn't change, would this aesthetic difference have altered your opinion in any way?

Huh. That could've been interesting. I'd have liked that.

I still don't like the concept of being forced into 3 decisions which turn out to have the same outcomes anyway, but if the star child was replaced with Avina it would have been a lot easier to swallow.

Ooo, now, Avina's an interesting one. If you encounter her a few times, and she talks to you without prompting, but you're not entirely sure she has...  Then she's there in the final bit, being controlled by the citadel's catalyst AI. That would've been something.

I don't do multiplayer but thanks.

Thanks also for coming and making a presence here on the boards, I wish you guys would do more of this as I believe it would be alot more civil around here if we had more Bioware/Fans feedback going on.

Anyway thanks for bring brave and coming to talk to us.:D
