From the armor select screen, it appears your original N7 armor provides an enormous health boost that far outweighs using any other armor.  Is this correct?

No! All is based on your playing tactic
N7 is good if you take a lot of hits. Like if your playing soldier on isanity.

But if your playing sentinel, vanguard, adept it is much more like your tactic will be based on using your powers so you pick up Inferno armor for recharge and power damage bonuses.

Also the great tactic is to kill enemies as fast as you can - so you pick up armor with weapon damage bonus or headshot damage if you're sniper. Also melee damage possible =)

inferno armor benefits all classes, ironically enough. especially since the power bonus improves the damage of ammo powers

As a Vanguard I went with 20% weapon damage/5% headshot damage/30% power damage. Increased health would have been a wast for me as I can just keep recharging my barrier

And with inferno armor, its useful early on, or if u want to offset a armor power like fortification or barrier, but there can come a point where somthing like 30% recharge speed is too insignificant.

This is not the case with individual armor pieces that add to power damage. It would be odd for armor sets to enhance ammo powers when it's the same stat bonus being applied.

I had a piece for just about each thing... Weapon Ammo, Shields, Health, Weapon Damage, etc...

Before I started getting armor pieces I liked I used the N7 Defender armor.

For my insanity run as a Soldier I didn't even bother with defense on my armor. I used armor that made my weapons more powerful and this worked so well that in places I had to check the difficulty to make sure it was still on insanity. There's no need for extra health if you kill enemies so fast that they can barely touch you. :D

That's how I run my Soldier Shep. The Hahne-Kedar armor with the bonus weapon power, iferno ammo and the particle rifle. It is awesome.

I just pick what looks good for my Shepard. The details don't affect my game too much since Shepard is already pretty overpowered as a soldier at least.

I actually prefer the one that boosts my shields a lot more than health.

Ditto   Once those shields are down you should be back in cover perhaps tossing out a power or two while they regen.  Shields fully regen.  Lost health doesn't.  Better shields will keep you shooting and dishing out damage more.  I also like some power and weapon damage so my assault rifle and my Reave hit harder.

I was thinking of changing over to Inferno armour (adept), but maybe I'll just up the weapon damage to have a balanced weapon/powers char.
My Insanity run will be a Vanguard, I think ( torn between that and Soldier atm) so thinking power cooldown weighted armour...WHOOSH---BAAM! WHOOSH---BAAM! WHOOSH---BAAM!

I just tested it in the game. Inferno armor doesn't actually boost ammo powers unfortunately.
