mmmm now this is interesting. Despite how great Bioware does characters Im not sure they really make it for me. There are some great characters out there.

Guybrush Threepwood, Nathan Drake are ones that leap to mind for me Id have to think about it some more

Mordin, Mordin and more Mordin,

Garrus would be a close second though - Great writing, great voice acting and an overall awesome character. Every time I select him for a mission I go into a "terminator" mode, get goosebumps and then I die before I realize I can't run and gun on insanity...

Mordin and I had a ... disagreement :( Damn war

Urdnot Wrex is my favorite character in ME beside Shepard. I was saddened that he wasn't on my team in ME3. :crying:

Agreed with OP.

I would put Liara T'soni next to Garrus though. Her character traits and arc are beautifully written.

I liked her better in ME1 and ME2. The ME3 Liara is just... Different.

Garrus is your bro-character. Most games have one, he's just more developed since he has three games of being a bro. Sure he's a great character, but nothing special IMO. I think the best written ME character is Legion, probably the best in video gaming history. This whole synthetic vs. organic theme wouldn't be worth discussing without Legion. He has personality while being entirely logical, and is unintentionally funny.

Yeah Garrus is likeable, but I wouldn't personally consider him the greatest video game character ever, or really even the best character in the ME series.

I agree about Legion though. Personally, I consider Legion and Mordin to be the best written and most compelling characters in the series.

I'd say the reason Garrus is such an upstanding character is that, even with characters appearing in multiple games, you don't usually get the amount of down time or get to really see inside their minds. You hear about these characters, you see them in action, and you're most likely controlling them.

But with Garrus Vakarian and really any of the squadmembers new and old of Mass Effect, you get that inside scoop. You see what's going on inside their thoughts and how it affects their morals, their actions.

The fact that they are characters you form attachments to are why they are the greatest characters out there: because you don't just like them: you care about them...hell, they feel just about as human as someone you'd talk to on a normal day, whether that someone is an old friend or an acquaintance...you can't say that about a lot of other fictional characters.

So in that regard: Kudos, Bioware. Kudos.

No. I like him, and he's insanely awesome, but he's not the best character ever. He's not even the best character in ME. The characters I think are great in ME from a writing standpoint are Legion, Javik and Saren. They're all very unique, I could go into a a breakdown of each of the characters and why they're great, well written and unique, but it'd take too long and I'm tired. I wouldn't get my thoughts out properly. I think Javik is probably the best written character in ME, just because he feels so alien, if you really look at it, what motiates him to do the things he does are unclear, even his most basic dialog, like cracking jokes, he doesn't do them to be funny, I don't think he's even aware he's being funny.

Don't get me wrong though, Garrus is one of my favorite characters in ME. But he's a bro character, he's the awesome sidekick, and he fills that role perfectly.

Definitely the best character in my experience. Shepard's cool and all and he does some badass stuff too, but Garrus has style.

My top 5:

1. Garrus Vakarian
2. Mordin Solus
3. Shepard
4. Alyx Vance
5. Master Chief John 117

No matter what negative thing you may have to say about Bioware or ME, I think we can all agree on the fact that they still make some of the best characters in video games period.

Garrus, Mordin, Wrex, Legion, hell even Liara, Tali etc etc...each of them are contenders in my book for greatest video game companions ever.

I agree with you. I never felt emotions for video game characters until I played Bioware games.

You make it sound so easy!  And here I've been trying to do it for months...  :pinched:

Er, not hanging out with Garrus, but just lucid dreaming in general.  Any tips? :o

Anyway, on topic, Garrus is easily my favorite Mass Effect character.  My favorite BioWare character is Alistair from Dragon Age.  Like, that is a dude I'd generally want to be around.  Hell, if I was going on an adventure, I'd just want Garrus, Alistair, and  HK-47.  God, that would be awesome.  And rather hilarious in the right situations.

Hm... on second though, we'd need at least one female companion in there, so...  Morrigan or Miranda.  Every rag-tag group of guys needs a cynical chick, everyone knows that    (I kid, I kid...  but seriously...)

I have tips, but I dont think we should discuss this here. Its a little off topic.

He's a nice enough dude and all, sadly he was putting the moves on the wrong woman so i had to headcanon him being thrown out of an airlock.
If only he could've kept it in his pants...

Batman /thread

Edit: Should have actually read the post. /self facepalm  Yeah Garrus is so much better written than in ME2.  The parts of the game where he wandered around the ship talking/joking with crew members were some of the best. Saw him actually talk to a redshirt once.
