Hi Guys,

I am now 66% towards finishing the game, playing a mage Arcane Warrior and Blood mage specs at lvl 17 atm. I couldnt resist not to talk about this although ppl have been saying that for a while, but honestly, i can solo everything with my mage, he's just unbeatable! 75% resistance against all school of magic, 100 mental and 96 physical res. thats sick and i am playing it on nightmare!

My question is why Bioware would create such an overpowered class, not that i am complaining hehe, i am enjoying it a lot :), but why mages? and is there any other spec/class combo that feels overpowered aswell?

cheers.

It's only OP because you can spam potions to avoid the negative side effects. Potions are the OP thing.

Yeah! Give the archdemon a good supply of potions, too.

Yes, that class combo is the most overpowered in the entire game and no, potions don't solve the problem entirely - you can still maintain all your AW skills even with 0 mana.

They don't turn off on 0mana? hm that needs fixing then

Though still, it's not like they have great DPS. They're almighty tanks, but not terribly good at anything else.

Sustained Abilities tap out your max Mana Pool, they don't need / drain mana to keep running as far as I know. Which on the face of it is actually a pretty clever design compared to having to renew the buff every few minutes, but it does have it's own set of limitations.

Oh, I had the plan on making an Arcane Warrior/Spirit Healer comination, but it seems I can make a badass killer combo instead. Thanks for the info, I'm gonna have so much awesome fun now. :D

This is THE main problem. Any sustains that drain mana should turn off once you're OOM. Fact is, Shimmering Shield not turning off when its supposed to is a big exploit, since Shield is essentially invulnerability for as long as you put it up (which is for an indefinite period of time for the PC due to this bug).

Ask the general console population... they will tell you that AW isn't very powerful precisely because in those versions, Shimmering Shield turns off once you're OOM.

Sorry for being slightly off topic, but HOW do you unlock Arcane Warrior without using a book? Is that even possible?

There is no book. You get it in the (edit whoops, no spoilers)

And yes, AW/BM is absurd, and even moreso if you bring along a rogue with ranger specialization. With the right spells you can deal as much damage as any class in the game, and keep getting health back from the ranger pet. It kind of breaks the game.

Shimmering shield Drains 10 mana/second. Its supposed to be balanced by the fact its not always up. On the PC it does not shut down at 0 mana making it more powerful then it should be.

Without Shimmering Shield (+75% all resists, +15 armour) AW who fights in melee instead of with spells really isn't any better then a Sword and Shield Warrior.

The Shimmering Shield on my Arcane Warrior (for the PC) (the discription which states it drains mana during combat) for a long time like everyone has said remained active even when the mana had run out (which I assume was a bug since it doesn't do this on the console) and made said AW nearly godly. However I used the daupdater to intall a mod recently and I think it may have update my version of the PC game because ever since Shimmering Shield works in combat like it was intended now, it runs out once my mana is gone.

And I'm enjoying my AW allot more, because now it's not just a case of going swinging into combat and very occasionaly downing a lesser health pot and defeating everyone because now I have to decide when to use Shimmering Shield (knowing it will consume mana, making using other spells apart from sustained ones quickly unusable, and that just drains my mana even faster). Admittely I can still use potions to keep it up, particularly if spammed, so it's not perfect. However even this can fail to stop it failling sometimes, and would still take up an action.

In any case, Shimmering Shield becoming something you have to consider when to use, and then to watch over your mana (such as now deciding at what point to use it in combat, prehaps keeping it for a curital moment, and hanging more back and allowing your main warriors to take the brunt of early fighting) can at least make AW a bit more strategic and tactical to use (and more fun) and not quite so godly (you can of course still spam lyrium to keep up the Shimmering Shield, so for course this doesn't necessarly change everything that much)

Yes, try Pellegrin balance mod, it really does fix the mage class, at least partially. Anyways, I just tried the following *really minor spoiler* Remember that quest where you found some dead or mad adventurers and all the clues pointed to a house in one of the many dirty back alleys in Denerim? And in the end you had to fight a nasty undead mage boss? Just for the fun I rerolled my char, made him an AW and soloed that fella on Nightmare. Took half an hour (literally) but I beat him easily nevertheless. So yes, AWs are gods.
