I googled Jessica Chobot after I got ME 3.

Judging by her pictures, I think she blew some of the members of Bioware. Or slept with someone important. Or someones.

Or probably for a high rating from IGN.

Most likely, however? Some people think she's hot. A lot of her pictures online are suggestive and revealing. Fan service.

Famous for seductively licking a psp.

I do not find her attractive, and her in game model isn't either.

This is one of the most sexist comments I've ever read.

I seriously doubt Emily Wong would keep quiet about an unshackled AI with Reaper tech wandering around...

Diana Allers is an embedded journalist, her job is to make the military look good and keep classified secrets classified. She's a war correspondent...

Emily Wong spies on and leaks traffic controllers falling asleep...

Yvonne has an established record of acting and voice over work.  Jessica Chobot has zero experience doing either and it showed.

I'm not really sure why they chose to put her into the game.  It's not like IGN is the largest or most established in gaming media.  I suppose it could just be putting a friend in the game for fun and that's fine with me, in a background capacity.  I'm not sure why you would put a non-actress in a roll that can last the entire game.

Thinking about what that character is ... it is the way they chose to show you everything else going on outside of your main story ... how the war was going, what was happening on other worlds and with other races.  It's actually a fairly important roll to the immersion and they gave it to a noob.   Reminds me of the Spiderman movies where they put friends and family into the crowds and whenever they spoke, it just annoyed the hell out of me.

So that IGN would feel obliged to give ME3 a 10/10! But seriously, this sort of thing needs to be investigated. There's definitely a conflict of interest here. It's a completely different matter if IGN comes out and admits that they're merely a marketing firm for hire, but they're portraying themselves as "gaming journalists". I just can't see IGN behaving objectively if they have a colleague feature in the game. It actually makes me sick, and more so when I read that IGN review...

The interplay between publishers and the gaming media borders on being corrupt.

There's something really nasty in this post, something misogynistic. It makes me very uncomfortable.

Most likely, it was a fan service thing. BW does that. It blew up because there's so little good will towards the game as a whole.

Misogynistic? How?

Maybe a hatred for Chobot.

Look at those pictures of her in those links I posted. I hate women like her.

I feel even more uncomfortable.

I assume your insults would be different if it was an attractive male correspondent?

So because she's hot and a female she blew someone from Bioware or slept with someone important?

I found Allers to be a somewhat pointless character.

She is supposed to be a war journalist for a galaxy spanning show and yet her war assets score is tiny, it is less than Kalisah bint Sinan al-Jilani and she is a "localised" reporter not galaxy spanning.

She doesn't really do or say much, and what she does say is voice acted in a really hammy and unbelievable way. You can really tell that Chobot isn't a professional because honestly her performance was as bad as the FF7 Voice Acting mod (check youtube for it); and because she doesn't say or do much the player doesn't developer a rapport with her and thus simply does not care about her. Hell, Bioware made us care more about al-Jilani in 2 "interviews" and one conversation than they did with Allers.
She is a thoroughly lacklustre and uninspired character.

Also her presence on the Normandy does not make sense (optional though it is) because why would Shepard (the person pretty much responsible for everything) want this complete stranger aboard his ship when he KNOWS that the Reapers make a habit of creating mildly indoctrinated servants infiltrate their enemies in order to subvert them?
It makes no sense for him/her to trust that Allers isn't indoctrinated (and with the invasion of the galaxy well under way it is entirely possible).

Emily Wong would have been a MUCH better, and more realistic choice. Or if Bioware absolutely HAD to kill her off, then we shoulda gotten al-Jilani.
Giving us Wong or al-Jilani meant they could have used to time/money spent on badly rendering Jessica Chobot into the game on something else; say modelling and actually showing us Tali's fricking face on Rannoch!

Argh.

That's unnecessary man. If you dislike the inclusion of Chobot, that's fine, but there is no call to be down right nasty about it with assumptions like that.

Gratuitous titillation!

And intertexual references to other games/series is also fan service. But, most commonly, it's the above.

Chobot is very well-known, she's modeled, been on TV, she's a gamer, a lots of people find her attractive.

Simply fan-service is why she is in game.

This is a false choice, OP. It's not like Bioware sat down and discussed it that way.

"We need to kill a character on Twitter, give another an amazingly lifelike 3D face, and do a shabby Photoshop of a stock image. Now let's pick who gets what-- who votes we kill Tali on Twitter? No one? Okay, I guess she gets the stock image. Since we already have a 3D face for Emily Wong, I guess that means she gets killed on Twitter, leaving Chobot/Allers as our choice for a new in-game model. That was easy, let's go for coffee."

Emily Wong was killed on Twitter because it made sense for her to be on Twitter, and it was a useful bit of viral storytelling, illustrating human resistance to the impossible foe.

Tali's face was revealed in a photograph because that's how Bioware's storytellers wanted to reveal her face. Like it or not, it has nothing at all to do with Emily Wong or Diana Allers/Jessica Chobot.

Speaking of whom, you can criticize Bioware all you want for including this person in the game, and I'll support you all the way. But just say, "Allers was a boring and fumbled character played by an unconvincing amateur. Her appearance seems like a misguided attempt at media payoff or fan service pandering." There's no need to conflate it with irrelevant issues.

The fact remains is that giving life to Chobot/Allers and face modeling her, took priority over other things that would make sense in the context of the game.  This says something about Bioware.  I'm not sure exactly what it says, but I really don't like it.

It made no sense to me for Emily Wong to be killed on Twitter.  It made no sense to me that she was even on Earth to be killed off, considering that for years she worked for Citadel News.  Chances are, the only people who paid attention the ANN "viral marketing" on Twitter were people who were already fans and knew Emily Wong from the games.  These were the only people who would really enjoy that Twitter feed.  Everyone else would be asking, WTF is Emily Wong?

You make a joke, I get to respond to it. And this one made me uncomfortable because I think it hints at something very, very ugly about the society you and I both most likely share.

While I don't agree with the OP's assertion of how she got into the game, I don't have a problem with his suspicion.  I think he's wrong and he has no proof of it, but why are people sitting here trying to act like the "casting couch" doesn't still exist?  We -know- it exists and we hear about it all the time across all media from acting to singing to modeling and beyond.
