I always find it inresting how BioWare manages to make old and often cliche character ideas somewhat intresting. It doesnt avert them into being a tv trope example, but theyre given enough personality to not make them as dull as bread.
James - Perhaps the best of them all. He's probably the most cliche guy there is. Tuff guy cool space marine from Gears of Duty. But hes given enough dialogue with the ones who contrast him, like the cultured warrior Javik and the sensitive but not pixie homosexual Cortez. He's a good comedic relief, and he takes the cliche stuff "pep talks, promotions" into intresting dialogue.
Liara - While considered by most to be the designated Green skinned space babe fanservice character, they acatually did give her an intresting character with the whole paragon turned paragade stuff. Some consider her romance story to be the best, and the archaeologist side was a neat twist.
EDI - Yeah, the theme of a sexbot for a physically disabled guy is old, but at least she gets a "meaning of life" side. She also gets a Dataesque role on the ship, and constantly inquires on percieved fault in organic/synthetic relationships. Quite intresting if youre into philosophy and transhumanism.
Turning cliche characters into something more?
