Are the salves and similar items really that useful?

My inventory is currently full and it's loaded with salves and similar items that give different elemental protections. I've used them from time to time, but frankly I just can't tell if they really make a difference.
Like most everything else in the game there are no specific stats for these items, so I can't really judge by looking at the description.
I'm wondering if I should just sell them and clear out my inventory.

Maybe if you play nightmare they are more useful. For now 1 playthrough on normal and on my second on hard i only used them (fire resistance) for the high dragon and flemeth during my first playthrough.

I'm wondering pretty much the same. I'm carrying them around all the time and when inventory cleaning time comes, I always think: I'll keep them now, I just need to remember to use them. But I never do.

Items that restore health and mana are obviously useful, but I've never needed to use any of the elemental balms or whatever they're called though.

I am, however, a noob who plays the game on easy.

For a few specific fights where you receive lots of elemental damage, they can help. But it's very situational.

I do exactly the same thing. I'm in a dungeon crawl and try to pick up an item, but get the message "Inventory Full". So I start going through it to see what I can purge and when I come to the salves, etc. I say to myself, "Man, I gotta use these things!". But I never do.

I always sell them ASAP.

Only the strongest ones are really of interest and even then only for some chosen fights.

The problem is, for the most part, you need to know what you're going to face before you actually get there to make them useful (this directly contradicts one of the game design points, which led to the creation of sustained abilities instead of D&D style pre-battle buffs).
So unless you know you're going to face a fire-breathing dragon or some spirit-dealing life-draining unbound revenant, it's quite useless.

Yeah, me too! :D I'm also stupid enough to carry around sets of armor and jewelry with different resistances in case I suddenly happen upon a dragon or something. And then of course when I do, I forget to actually use them. Hmm, when I think about it, it's no wonder I'm always strapped for inventory space...

Maybe im wrong, but i thought useable items didnt take up inventory space, in other words weightless?

Each consumable stack takes up 1 inventory space. So, 1000 lyrium potions take up as much room as 1 lyrium potion.

To answer the original question, I couldn't be bothered with salves and poisons so far. Not on Normal, anyway.

Each type of item takes one slot but they will stack at that point and not take any more slots.

Very situational at the best and most of the time your going to be hit up front by them before you even know your gonna want to use them. I just sold all the lesser ones I found because of that and since like the rock salve (increase defense) or the one that increased attack speed stacked I kept them around for when I felt like using them. To me they do not make a lot of difference.

It's an old RPG tradition: you hoard all kinds of potions in case you might need them, and at the final battle you're too excited to even remember them.

Hehe the whole fight crab without using mana and life pots incase there is a bigger crab around the corner. End game with 100 mana pots.

I haven't met any enemies except for dragons that do consistant elemental damage for them to be worthwhile. Other than the greater warmth balms

Salves only really help me out on bosses (like those desire demons who feel the need to spam Cone of Cold and winters grasp back to back) other wise I sell them.

Now slaves on the other hand...

I played on nightmare and the only time I ever needed them was when I was fighting dragons and when I fought blood mages in Denerim. Funny enough, when it came to the final battle, I didn't have the salves I needed because I forgot to remove them from the chest in the camp before it was too late.
