So I just found out about this tidbit from Pax last year:

There is a new mantra being used by the development team while working on upcoming DLC and it involves preparation, teamwork, and positioning. They discussed how battle needs to be incredibly tactical with the player preparing his team for combat, utilizing the strength of his party-mates, and correctly placing his characters in the perfect tactical positions.

Even though I think overall this sounds like an improvement, it still worries me.  I hate metagaming battles (I prefer RPing combat), and the "preparing for combat" quote might be an issue.  If you expect a battle and can just use general buffs, it's one thing, but what I don't enjoy is using specific buffs against enemy talents my characters have no reason to expect.  Preparation can be fun, but I'm wondering how far Bioware will take it.

I know this issue probably bothers me a lot more than most players, but I'm wondering if there are others who dislike having to play clairvoyants.  I'd prefer having the combat feel like it fits into the world.

I don't think it would break immersion. If you're going into a blood mage lair, you would want to plan accordingly. I think it would be in character to decide what to do to prepare using what you know.

If positioning will be more important in the future, does that mean that the player won't constantly be surrounded due to enemies falling from the sky?

There were a few times where I would run into a room, grab the attention of the enemies, and then retreat through a "bottleneck", where Aveline would block off the entrance, though these situations seem to be rare. Trying to target enemies through a bottleneck with a bow can also be tricky at times, aoe magic, less so.

Also, after cut-scenes, the game likes to group the party together, which messes up any kind of pre-battle positioning. Hopefully that would be addressed.
