If the hero does have living family members at the start of the game, I hope they aren't just killed as an excuse to add drama to the story. Bioware's writers have become predictable in that regard.
I did have a strong connection with the magi origin, at least before I played it for the 10th time or so (an exaggeration). When my mage returned to the circle during Broken Circle, he was sad to see his former home overrun by abominations, and it was satisfying to rescue Irving. The origin also gave me a nice intro to mages, templars, and demons. I didn't just feel like I was playing a character, I was a mage, with all the positives and negatives that go along with it.
I also liked playing the other origins, where I could later return and the npcs would recognize my character as a dwarf noble/commoner, a Cousland, etc. You don't get to see all of this in a single playthrough, and it was fun getting revenge on Bhelen as my dwarf noble, or saving the humans from the blight as a lowly elf mage.
Just slain the Archdemon one more time! But I just never could play through DAII again...Is this meaningful?

I have 16 Wardens. I've played from "goody two shoes" all the way to "beoytch from hell". The game has been installed since the day of purchase, and it will stay on my computer (right there with BG2 and NWN - love those user-made mods to pieces).
I have yet to play the Dwarf Origin. I have only one male (dalish elf). I still have ways to go, and I love it.
I have played DA2 to completion once. I could not talk myself into another playthrough. It's been uninstalled for a great while now, and I've actually no idea where the disc is atm. Nor do I care in the least.

Sadly, EA controlled Bioware is exploiting badly ailing RPG market by making nonsense games like DA2 because no one is willing to step up and make a proper RPG. In the time we're living in, DA2 is a great RPG - however it means very little when there is literally zero competition on RPG market.

The main reason why DA2 gets less playthroughs is because they recycle environments. by Act 3 I had already felt like I played the game a bunch of times

The recycled environments were a minor nuisance to me, but not the reason I haven't replayed it. I just can't replay the game because my Hawke -- the "real Hawke" -- already completed the journey and any attempt to do another run with a different Hawke feels like an imposter to me.hussey 92 wrote...

I know that's weird and my own issue to deal with, but it's how I feel. That's probably why I haven't been able to successfully replay any BioWare RPG.
