The SR-2 Life Support is empty, so it'd be fine for a squadmate. The only other squad biotics are Liara and Javik; Liara is clearly an adept, and Javik is arguably more adept than vanguard. Having a dedicated vanguard would be better from a squad loadout perspective.
As for the slave trade, a batarian who supports that would be tough to empathise with.

Ah I see. Slave trade is their higher castes thing wasnt it? I was always unsure. Batarian squadmate could shore up things like that.
Vanguard would be entertaining to have.

A batarian crew member could give shepard a new bonus ability if shep trains it in the med bay... Like the blade armor they have in multi...

I would like a Batarian squadmate in hindsight, since it is 2015 already. I really liked to see more of the Batarians and the Hegemony. My idea would probably be a Batarian slaver that took part in Elysium, Mindoir or Torfan, depending on Shep's background. The Batarian will then get caught and become a slave himself. Then he escapes and becomes a mercenary. We could recruit him in the place of Zaeed.
In ME3, he could become a military leader in the Hegemony after the events of ME2 and help Shepard earn some Batarian war assets. There could be a mission called Priority: Khar'Shan, where Shepard must convince the remaining Batarian leaders to make peace with the Alliance. Said Batarian squadmate from ME2 will help you in the mission.
Since he is taking the place of Zaeed, his name could be something like Zaekh Mas'ani.
Thoughts?

His story in ME2 will have to change as well, so maybe his loyalty mission could be hunting down the person who enslaved him, which is vaguely similar to Zaeed's loyalty mission.

This is a very good idea, all three would be great. Aria is a powerful one and I love her for her characteristic. Kirrahe and Kal-Reegar (especially Kal) didn't get what they deserved. I would welcome them to my crew.
