Allistair Tank: Shield Wall or Shield Defense?

I have begun to wonder about this lately, as I’ve always used Shield Wall simply because the cost was 20 more (55) than Shield Defense (35) – thus, I always thought it to be superior.

But after coming to realize that +defense is a better tanking stat than +armor (and not to mention, I’m using Juggernaut, so already have high armor), I’m now wondering why on earth Shield wall costs so much more.

They both add an equal number of their respective stat. I can’t recall the number, but Shield Wall gives the same amount of armor as Shield Defense gives defense. So is there anything I’m missing here, or is Shield Wall simply fail and I should actually be using Shield Defense?

fill the whole shield tree shield wall is immune to knock backs when the tree is filled so better

When you've got both shield expertise and shield mastery the shield wall gives you 10 defense, 5 armour and immunity to knockdown but reduced damage and shield defense just gives you 15 defense.

Since knockdown immunity and 5 armour beats 5 defense shield wall becomes the superior talent for most situations the only drawback being a slightly reduced damage output. Earlier on it's more of a pro vs con thing, lots of weak enemies means +armour is great but fewer stronger enemies the defense might help more, especially if you have a high dex and they are slow but strong attackers (you really want them to miss).

Situational, different stances (or no stance at all) for different fight.

Shield wall doesn't fail

Fully upgraded Shield wall gives + armor & + defense + immune to direct knockdown.

Fully upgraded Shield defense gives quite a lot of +defense, it doesn't give armor.
