How does being trapped mean you don't need to eat to survive?

When you exist as a being of pure thought and emotion, I imagine you don't have the same dietary needs as us mere mortals.

That doesn't answer my question, so I'll clarify.

Demons feed off mortals. How does a demon that's manifested in the real world survive if there are no mortals to feed from? Can a demon survive in the mortal world without feeding?

Perhaps a demon does not need to feed in order to continue existing.

As a potential parallel, in D&D demons and devils are often described as consuming those they kill as a matter of creating more fear suffering, rather than needing to actually eat anything.

Darkspawn eat without needing to.

Maybe demons have something similar going on.

Indeed, shades feed on the psyches of mortals, but it never does anything but heighten their appetite.

I'd like a Desire Demon party member, but I'd want them to look like a mostly-naked purple person with flaming hair and horns.

As an added bonus, write the character's dialogue in such an androgynous way, that there can be a female AND a male model for the same demon, and which form it takes depends on the gender of the main character.

I'd like a genderfluid demon, the current model is fine.

A female witch possessed by a Desire Demon :)
Desire Demon shape will be like a specialization, you need to activate that shape, something similar Blood Mage and Spirit Healer from DA2 to use them own spells.
When deactivated, she will be her natural body, human, elf or whatever.
When witch shape, she can use all spells that was learned before. And in Desire Demon shape, she will have specific spells to use too.

A Desire Demon companion (and presumably LI option) would be interesting. Although Justice from DA:A and Anders in DA2 gave us perspective on how spirits and abominations see the world we've never seen it from the point of view of a demon. Why are they so interested in crossing the veil? Can they find a way to exist in the world without going evil and crazy, or are they doomed from the start?

If there was a demon companion I'd hope they have several character outcomes if you interact with them. I'd be happy with the "dark" option of creating a binding contract with it (sort of like how the Spirit Monk can work with Ya Zhen in Jade Empire), a "light" option of making them less malevolent (sort of like what happened with Justice but from the other direction) and a "grey" option in which you don't interact with them enough (sort of like Oghren losin his way in the DA:O epilogue if his quests and approval aren't done).

I love the idea of a desire demon as party member. And this rocks! (But, yeah, I picture this being hard. Heheh. But great.)

By Heather? I have no idea what happened when he spoke to Heather. He has said that demons and spirits are different. It's fine if he misremembered or misspoke. I always thought it was rather silly myself.

Edit 1: Compiling here... the quotes I'm finding suggest he was talking about possession when he spoke to me as well.

Edit 2:

And thank you OP for using the term 'desire spirit.' It's sad that the majority of people on this board are so narrow-minded they feel the need to use the term 'demon.'
Indeed.

Except that it is a demon. It's not a question of polite phrasing but of terminology-- a demon is any spirit that feeds off of/attempts to manipulate living beings through their baser emotions. The desire demons do so by definition.

Actually, I'd have nothing against having a Desire Demon as a party member. That could be quite cool. But they'd either need to be a manifest demon or be possessing a host-- they couldn't be melded a la Wynne. That's what a spirit does, and the two are very different things.

David Gaider wrote...

Maria Caliban wrote...
Are they different because of what they feed off or do they feed off different emotions/concepts because they're different beings?

The former. Ultimately they're all spirits-- but the nature of a spirit can change. I believe Justice has quite a bit to say about this in Awakening.

Handy. Thanks for the compilation. :)

Well, a desire demon companion like Anders was with Justice. I don't want an actual demon walking around. It would be cool or funny if she was in the body of Chantry sister. Lol

I can't imagine that a desire demon, let alone any demon, being interested in saving the world, fighting mages/templars, etc.

If a desire demon companion wasn't a love interest, would anyone be interested?

Well depends on how they plan the Main character to be.
If they allow Alignments besides Lawful Good, Chaotic Good and Neutral Good.

If you have an evil character, why not?
He could be a blood mage.

Let's just be honest and admit that those of us who are interested in desire demons are in it for the sultry voice and boobies. Otherwise any ol' demon would work fine.

And what's wrong with that? :) DD has a cool visual design overall, other demons are kind of boring.
Actually, the encounters with DD in Origin seem to give them more personality than other demons, and with the primary desire to explore, sense and live the world, not just manipulate people.

Reminded me of Fall-from-Grace... no, do not want a chaste DD. That would be Evil. Image IPB

I think that would still be an interesting way to implement it. I think it would be incredibly hard to write a genuine romance with a desire demon anyway.

Though it might be interesting. I wouldn't wanna lay down what can and cannot be done before somebody has tried it. And even then, who knows?

I think a demon would be very interested in the mages of Thedas being free of the Chantry and Templars.

A Shade is a demon that has preyed on enough people to physically manifest by itself. If a demon were to cross over from the Veil but be trapped with no corpse or person in sight, eventually they would lose their power. Ultimately, I think they would become a wisp.

If, however, a demon is summoned through blood magic then it has no need to feed on anyone because it now physically exists in the mortal realm.

Well, there's currently no confirmation for that last bit I think, even if it's a popular fan theory. The Shade Codex says demons that cross the Veil are disoriented by the physical world, and makes no distinction about how they crossed over. It further suggests that all demons need to feed--even in the Fade. They feed in the Fade off the psyche of those they encounter, probably dreamers or places where the Veil is thin. If they cross over to the living world then either they learn to feed in a similar fashion, without possession, thus becoming Shades, or (more commonly due to confusion) leap for the first available possession of living or dead thing around.

The Wisp Codex does make it sound like demons who didn't find hosts or found nothing to feed on become wisps, though. :) I think we only encounter them in the Fade ingame, but the Codex says they can be found in the waking world.

Yes, because if my suggestion about the demon taking the form of the opposite gender of the player character was implemented, making it a romance would be problematic for player who want same-sex romances.

Absolutely. I find the whole spirit/demon thing facinating and giving us the opportunity to gain a bit more insight into what it means to be a spirit/demon would be very cool in itself.
