Why does it have to be a desire demon? Why can't we have
A Sloth demon: and try to motivate it into actually helping us on our quest?
A Pride demon: and argue with it about how we're actually the hero of the story and much more awesome and powerful than him?
A Rage demon: and spend all our time trying to keep it out of bar fights and away from flammable objects?

Or maybe an entirely new type? Like an ignorance demon. Or an annoyance demon. A ceaseless prattle demon...
Hey... we could have a troll demon.

"All Templars must be punished."
"Shut up!"
You're totally right though. I could see a lot of value in having a demonic spirit that brings something to the table other than just desire (*cough*boobies*cough*).

Desire Demons are the most "peaceful" among them, and always eager to interact with the mortals.

But as nothing more than a companion with a naughty and cruel personality who might serve as a fetish to some I say no.

I've always thought that it should be the part of blood magic skill tree. Like, after you invest certain number of points you can unlock demon familiar.Vincent Laww wrote...
I'd prefer the ability to conjure demons over having a demon companion.

It makes no sense for a Desire Demon and goes against the lore.

In NWN2 you also cound made a companion golem from various parts like HK-47 from KOTOR2. The fun thing is - when you deal with deamons, they never betray or turn out on you when you complete your dealings with them. Not like "thank you for your task and now I'll take you as well!"mass effect lover 111 wrote...

Give the desire demon a unisex voice and make it be able to change it's shape to a male or female desire demon by player's asking at the beginning of the relationship this way you can have M/M & M/F & F/F with it and everyone's happy!

There's few thing I hate more than poeple demanding unique companions.
"Ohh a new race. We MUST have a companion from that race!"
Uniqueness is overrated. I'm getting tired of my party looking like a walking circus or a walking commercial for the United Colors of Benetton.
Just once I'd like to have a party consisting of normal beings. No living rocks or turds. No rare/speshul races/creatures. No possesed, no runaway experiments, no marked or otehrwise unique flowers.
And to equip them how I want...
Ohh..I still remeber NWN2 and how I spent a fortune creating and enchanting a matching set of blue capes with a emblem of a white sword for my entire party. And gethering all the other matching gear. When the party set out to the field, they really look like a organized, discisplined and united force...

Well then I hope the cast of DA3 consists entirely of human male warriors.
No, uniqueness isn't overrated. The "circus" companion roster may not be the most realistic, but it is the most interesting and fun. It gives us a greater outlook on more diverse backrounds and cultures within the DA world. Getting a Qunari companion or an abomination offers a perspective you can't get anywhere else in the setting, for example.
A demon is a 'normal' creature because we fight them very often. It would not be so far-fetched that one you come across may find itself in the position where it would want to travel with you to somehow benefit itself. Certainly less out there than Shale. Of course I'd like the choice to kill it up front if I want.
But really we only really get 2 of these more unique companions at most in each game out of parties of 6-8. Origins had Shale and Sten, DA2 had Anders and Fenris. Otherwise there wasn't much outlandish. In Dragon Age you aren't creating a military team out of your party, you're coming across distinct individuals who have their own motivations in joining you and preferences/specializations in combat. It makes sense they have diverse backrounds in all respects, including race.

It can be done, but I think they would be hard-pressed to cover the contractual obligations well enough to make a demon serve the player's will. Demons make lopsided, fine-printed contracts as a way of life.
This is one of those situations where I think that, If they do it, they should do it right or not at all. A fail contract is a fail demon which is just a weak story when keeping it as a companion.

Also, can you name a successful RPG with a team of normal companions? And the most successfull RPGs enjoyed the most bizzarre share of unique party members.
