In ME3 the scanning and probing work differently. For scanning, your ship just sends out a
'ping' and anything in it's radius will be brought to your attention visually as well as by way of an alert from EDI.

Once you've found an object of interest, you fly the ship over it and click the 'dock/scan/investigate' button in the lower right. Then you scan around briefly till you find the anomoly and fire a single probe.

That's it.

Except that scanning is bugged in the PC version.

If you change the default keybinding for the Right Mouse Button, it breaks scanning. Only solution is to flip back to the default keybinding settings and load into a previous save (even an autosave) or restart the game.

Basically, in the PC version if you rebind RMB, you have to keep changing your keys back after each instance of scanning. Which is why I'd do scanning en masse then do some missions then do a round of scanning, so I wasn't having to swap my keybinds all the time.

But I don't understand how you send out that "Ping". Do you do that as soon as you enter a system???

Right mouse button to ping, you can only scan planets that you discover something on, you can orbit other planets but only to see what's written about them.

The Right Mouse Button is the default key to ping in a solar system. And you have to ping multiple times in different areas (basically playing a Mass Effect version of "Marco! Polo!") to find everything in each system.

Thankfully, once you've found at least 1 item in a system, the system name will have a % displayed that tells you how much of that systems war assets or resources you've found thusfar.

Ok...I worked on what you suggested......I enter a system, click on the "Right Mouse" button but I don't get any type of "Ping" at all. I'll even hover over a planet and try to "Ping" and still nothing. So I enter orbit on these planets and still nothing....I know that this is a Very Valuble tool with the Game. But if I don't know how to activate it, and I call EA and they have no idea...Where do i go to???

Ok...Looked it up on "YouTube" on how to do it......It seems that you can only "Ping" and launch "Probes" in areas where the Reapers are already located.....So with that info, I think I can enjoy the game much more.....

There are quite a few systems where you cannot ping, as there are no assets to find. This is the game's way of telling you don't bother. For the most part, these systems are the ones that have a main story mission located on a planet on that screen. Presumably, this was done to keep the careless ones from initiating a reaper chase scene in a system where you are trying to land --- although that would make it a little more interesting.

As a general rule, none of the systems on the inside ring of the galaxy map will have war resources. But either way, no ping -- nothing to find. As for why some pings generate more reaper threat than others, I don't have the slightest idea. Presumably random, but...

As for actually scanning a planet to acquire a resource or initiate a mission.... it's the same as ME2. Hold right mouse key to scan, laboriously slide your mouse over and over and over until your reach the glow spot, and then left mouse to fire the probe. Thankfully, that is all there is to it.

No good, I'm in a system now where I need to ping, but my "Right Mouse Button" will not performe the task. So I saved the Game, went out and changed all the keybindings back to default, and still I'm unable to Ping.......What the Hell is going on.....

re read my first post in this thread, the scanning function has a bug: if you changed the default keybinding for the right mouse button it will not let you scan.

Do a search for scan and galaxy map to find the various threads discussing this, including two posted by me.

I read your post and if your scanning is utterly broken then its the first case of that mentioned on these forums. The vast majority of the people with scanning issues is related to changing the keybinding for the Right Mouse Button.

I have the PC platform of Mass Efffects 3 and tryed to scan the planets for the artifacts regarding some of the mini quest ect. I went back to make sure my keybindings were set on default and I still cannot scan the planets No matter how many times I try. To say the least I am veryyyy discouraged with a number of things with the Mass Effects 3 game one the scanning problem, two the way the ending was done.I have played the game twice to the end and have to say delivery fell short.Ted Dukelow

Please reread. you have to reset keybinds to default AND REALOAD A PREVIOUS SAVE (or a quicksave you just made) before the scanning will work again.

Then you just have to switch your keybinds back to what you like for combat when you're done scanning.

If you rebind your Right Mouse Button to a different in-game function, you will.

About half the gaming community uses the WASD for movement, the rest use the arrow keys or the RMB for movement (a hold over from the early day's of online FPS games). So it's a fairly big deal that rebinding the RMB breaks something that is critical to the game.

Thank you everyone for all your suggestions.I can now scan which helps make that part of the game more enjoyable (Hep Hep Hurray).
