Why the Star-Child is a problem, but is not the cannon-destroying plot-hole that everyone thinks it is

Let me start off by saying that I am no fan of the Catalyst/Star-Child.  The introduction of a new character at the very end of a story is a writing no-no that should be avoided like the plague.  It is silly and contrived and is exemplar of bad writing.  That being said, I understand the community's frustration with the Catalyst, but I think some people are making a bigger deal out of him than he really is.  He isn't as much of a plot-hole or as cannon-breaking as he appears.  Here are my reasons:

Though the Catalyst says that he controls the Reapers, is the architect of their pattern of destruction, and lives in the Citadel, these statements are rather vague and leave much to the imagination.  Control could simply refer to a runtime or sub-routine in the Reapers' programming that even they aren't fully aware of.  The Reapers themselves may only know of the Catalyst as the Citadel and not as the entity that resides in it.

Just because he lives in the Citadel doesn't mean he has any control over its functions.  Though he's clearly some kind of AI, I like to think that he's more of a memory than a controlling intelligence.  He might have no real power whatsoever.  He might be able to watch, but it is pretty obvious from his requirement that Shepard make a choice that there needs to be a physical action to control the Citadel, hence the Keepers.  The Keepers can physically interface with the station, the Catalyst clearly cannot.

I do think that the Catalyst definitely needs to be fleshed out more, and I hope that the Extended Cut DLC this summer will do that.  Would I prefer that he wasn't ued at all?  Yes.  But he exists and that is the reality that we have to live with.  Granted, I don't have much evidence for these theories, but conjecture is better than nothing.  Your thoughts/criticisms?
