While I'm in agreement that the Jacob romance was handled atrociously for all the FemSheps who romanced him, this post is about what I feel was a major missed opportunity for his character. So let's begin...
In ME2 one of the first things Jacob tells you is that he was a corsair for the Alliance Navy before he joined Cerberus, a 'pirate' captain with his own crew, and this is why he's also one of the only 3 people capable of leading a squad through the Collector Base. A continuation of this would have, IMO, been a great way to develop his character. After defecting from Cerberus, he gets his own crew and ship and begins sabotaging TIM's plans while aiding the Alliance, all the while not being officially affiliated with anyone while doing the right thing and not being restricted by the red tape he hated so much in ME2.
I think that not only would this have made him a lot more interesting in the eyes of the people who found him to be bland, it would also give him a far more legitimate reason for not wanting to join your crew. Shepard would never abandon the Normandy and his/her crew, so why should Jacob? He has his own responsibilites as captain, instead of being a glorified bodyguard like the way he is presented in ME3.
Thoughts?

I think he deserved a "sacrifice himself" type of scene like Grunt. I mean people love Grunt more than ever after that rachni mission and I think it would have helped Jacob as well.

Not a Jacob fan but even now I think the continuation of his romance from ME2 was big middle finger to Jacob fans, no offense BW, still compared to how Thane´s romance ends I can guess alot of people got picked off.
