I've stopped getting this problem ever since I started waiting 30 seconds at the start screen (debris falling to Earth). Wait until the EA and Bioware logos fade, then wait until a big flaming chunk falls in the foreground. When it disappears off the bottom of the screen, press start.
This hasn't failed me in about 10 starts of ME3.
Hm, I've tried that and just about everything else and still nothing. I thought the worst thing I'd have to deal with in this game is the constant locking and Citadel elevator freezes. This is frustrating, to put it mildly.

It's the only "fix" i've been able to achieve that works consistently.

This is really getting annoying. Almost a week without being able to access any part of the game at all, and it seems like a lot of people are getting back in fine for some reason. I hope they're still looking at it urgently.

Is there any update to this issue? This is still happening to me every day and it takes at least 20 minutes of quitting the game and retrying just to play. Please, just enable the menu selection in the background as the game is checking for DLC. That's all we ask. At least that way, we can play.
No update. Thread started 25 days ago. Apparenty Non Communication is also an Art ....

For the first time, I just had the Checking Downloadable Content issue whilst I wasn't signed in to PSN! Noooo F F F WTF!?

At the start screen, where you see the pieces of flaming wreckage falling to Earth, I have to wait at least until the biggest piece of wreckage (in the foreground) has fallen twice before hitting start and going to the main menu.
If I don't wait, it will always give me the 'checking downloadable content' message and lock the menu select.
If I do wait, I can play the game normally.
I understand this might not work for some people, but for me it is 100% fixed using this method.

This was not an issue prior to the latest update. (mind you there was also a a recent PS3 sony update)
Glad I don't really need to play ME3 much any more. So I can almost kiss Bioware Good Bye for ever, now that they seem to be moving to 99% MMO games.

This evening I'll try Zamboyoshi's suggestion of waiting awhile at the first start screen. Thanks for the tips everyone, though I just wish Bioware/EA would fix this already.
UPDATE: So waiting at the start screen for 30-60 seconds worked like a charm both times I loaded the game last night. Unfortunately, after playing awhile in the single player campaign and then quiting to the main menu resulted in the "Checking downloadable content..." hang again, meaning I couldn't go into multiplayer without quitting to the XMB and restarting.

Start the game, everything fine except when I quit the SP campaign to the main menu. I'm wondering whether I just need to give it some time between saving the game and quitting to the main menu...
Seriously Bioware, this game should not require this sort of player guess-work just to get it to run without effectively crashing.

Whereby the game will not get to the main menu, ever.
The only way to resolve is to unplug the ethernet cable from the PS3 , start ME3, let it get to the main menu. Then plug back in the Ethernet cable, login into PSN, then EA/origin, then multiplayer...
Its not linked to either the "auto login to EA" or "allow stat upload", as I've tried all combinations. Definitely seems to be an authorisation issue to your servers. I posted more online issues in the multiplayer section too, but just signing up for this particular PS3 one.
I have NAT2, EA approved ports open, uPnP enabled etc.

our solution was to boot the game offline, then reconnect after you reach main menu,
Then I found that if I set my Autoconnect to EA to ON, it works out fine. But I preferred to connect manually, since ME2.
