I've stopped getting this problem ever since I started waiting 30 seconds at the start screen (debris falling to Earth). Wait until the EA and Bioware logos fade, then wait until a big flaming chunk falls in the foreground. When it disappears off the bottom of the screen, press start.

This hasn't failed me in about 10 starts of ME3.

Hm, I've tried that and just about everything else and still nothing. I thought the worst thing I'd have to deal with in this game is the constant locking and Citadel elevator freezes. This is frustrating, to put it mildly.

Are you logged into PSN? I ask because that has always seemed to be the cause of the problem for me. If I'm online, and start the game, I get this problem. If I wait until after I start the game to connect online, I don't.

It's the only "fix" i've been able to achieve that works consistently.

Yea, waiting at the "Press Start Button" screen for like 30 sec seems to work some of the time, but it is just better, imo, to log out of PSN and then back in.

Srsly, ridic.

This only half works for me. I can get to the menu by logging out of PSN and launching the game, but once I then try and connect (for Galaxy At War/DLC/MP purposes) I get stuck on the 'connecting to EA servers' message again. I've also tried the 'wait on title screen' thing and no dice.

This is really getting annoying. Almost a week without being able to access any part of the game at all, and it seems like a lot of people are getting back in fine for some reason. I hope they're still looking at it urgently.

Setting the game to auto log-in to EA servers seems to have fixed the problem for me. Disconnect your PS3 from the interent, boot up the game, change the settings in the menu and HOPEFULLY you won't have any more issues.

The only reason I have auto-login disabled is that if for some reason the ME3 servers are down, my game hangs at the 'connecting to server' message instead of the 'checking dlc' message. Can't win!

Dont know if its a bug but everytime i go from any menu to the main menu it always says checking downloadable content even though it did that when i first started the game. If i am in the options menu and back to the main menu bam checking DLC. Real freaking annyoying that it does this.

Is there any update to this issue? This is still happening to me every day and it takes at least 20 minutes of quitting the game and retrying just to play. Please, just enable the menu selection in the background as the game is checking for DLC. That's all we ask. At least that way, we can play.

Well, signing out of PSN, then starting the game and going to multiplayer (which then has you sign in at that point) has solved the problem completely for me, or so I thought...

For the first time, I just had the Checking Downloadable Content issue whilst I wasn't signed in to PSN! Noooo F F F WTF!?

I am signed in to PSN and have it set to NOT auto-connect to EA servers.

At the start screen, where you see the pieces of flaming wreckage falling to Earth, I have to wait at least until the biggest piece of wreckage (in the foreground) has fallen twice before hitting start and going to the main menu.

If I don't wait, it will always give me the 'checking downloadable content' message and lock the menu select.

If I do wait, I can play the game normally.

I understand this might not work for some people, but for me it is 100% fixed using this method.

I recently a few days ago applied the latest patch (I think it is 1.03 iirc) and this screen started up and it does not allow me to play. However if you totally disconnect from the internet it works fine. also if you set the game to auto connect to EA servers on start it seems to also work fine.

This was not an issue prior to the latest update. (mind you there was also a a recent PS3 sony update)

Glad I don't really need to play ME3 much any more. So I can almost kiss Bioware Good Bye for ever, now that they seem to be moving to 99% MMO games.

I'm having this problem now too ever since I set it to not auto-login to EA (though I auto-log on PSN), and it seems to be getting worse. Last night I deleted and reinstalled the patch, and it immediately loaded the main menu fine, but then after a single player session, I quit back to main menu and it hung on "Checking downloadable content..." again.

This evening I'll try Zamboyoshi's suggestion of waiting awhile at the first start screen. Thanks for the tips everyone, though I just wish Bioware/EA would fix this already.

UPDATE: So waiting at the start screen for 30-60 seconds worked like a charm both times I loaded the game last night.  Unfortunately, after playing awhile in the single player campaign and then quiting to the main menu resulted in the "Checking downloadable content..." hang again, meaning I couldn't go into multiplayer without quitting to the XMB and restarting.

Wow, I am getting the exact same problem now Satnamji. It only started happening the last few days...

Start the game, everything fine except when I quit the SP campaign to the main menu. I'm wondering whether I just need to give it some time between saving the game and quitting to the main menu...

Seriously Bioware, this game should not require this sort of player guess-work just to get it to run without effectively crashing.

I also get the "checking downloadable content" issue too.
Whereby the game will not get to the main menu, ever.

The only way to resolve is to unplug the ethernet cable from the PS3 , start ME3,  let it get to the main menu.  Then plug back in the Ethernet cable, login into PSN, then EA/origin, then multiplayer...

Its not linked to either the "auto login to EA" or "allow stat upload", as I've tried all combinations.  Definitely seems to be an authorisation issue to your servers.  I posted more online issues in the multiplayer section too, but just signing up for this particular PS3 one.

I have NAT2, EA approved ports open, uPnP enabled etc.

I had this on my 360, check this out:

http://social.biowar.../index/11353924

our solution was to boot the game offline, then reconnect after you reach main menu,

Then I found that if I set my Autoconnect to EA to ON, it works out fine. But I preferred to connect manually, since ME2.

I'm on PC and I've added this error to the long list of them I've encountered. From store issues to login issues to not even being able to play a game I've already paid for, I have to say I will never buy another Bioware or EA title again. If this is the level of service (or lack thereof) I can expect, they will never have my money. I have spent more time troubleshooting their shoddy software than actually playing their game.

an easy fix for this problem is to sighn out of psn before you launch the game, an then after it loads up an you get the main screen,it will do the content checks, an then be fine, an then sign back into psn, an it wont do the problem you described, the same thing used to happen to me, an this is the work around i use, it works 100% guaranteed!!! if you want o avoid the problem go into the game options, an then the on-line option, an put auto sign into ea on, an leave all the settings under on line on, an then the problem with it just checking downloadable content forever goes away, but i found if playing single player having the bioware feedback,an auto ea sign in, off makes the game frame rate much more smoother, so basically its better to have all the options under the online menu turned off, an also auto saves should be turned off, that way single player works better, an then whenever you launch the mass effect 3 disk, you need to first sign out of psn, an then after its booted up an done all the checks, then sign back in, that way the menu wont become static at checking dlc hope i helped!!
