Does anyone else think ME1 is the best game in the trilogy?

ME1 had all sort of shorcomings yet the best story told in the trilogy.

ME2 was a very good game with great characters, but its story was somewhat off-topic and felt like sidequests. Overal plots were pretty bad, too. Hundreds thousands of people vanishing and the alliance is ignoring the threat. wait, what?

ME3 had the best gameplay overal but it had more ploholes than the number of holes in a bee hive.

I think ME1 is the best in the trilogy simply because it had the best story despite being the worst 'game to play.' Does anyone feel the same?

And if you agree, I will make a remark that it's quite depressing to see that each sequal is getting worse than its predecessor; makes me wonder where BW is heading...

edit: gampelay is definitely essential, but once you are done with the game, I think what really remains is the story. We spend more time thinking/discussing ME universe than the time we actually play the games. ME can be a bad game to play, but it managed to create such lively unvierse and stories that made all these discussions on ME world possible.

Yes, ME1 is the best story. Controls were a bit clunky.

I think it had the best story, but ME2 is my favorite. And I don't think ME2's plot was off topic until ME3 made it off topic. Also the people were disappearing in the Terminus systems outside the alliance's reach. They had no real way of knowing what was happening or why.

Most definitely. My favorite moments, favorite squadmates, favorite antagonists, favorite mission (Virmire), best written and paced story.

Followed by ME3 and then ME2 in third.

I preferred ME2's character-driven story.

I agree that ME1 had the best story.

Also the last mission from the point that Sovereign comes through the relay to attack the Citadel is absolutely incredible.

It was definitely my favourite of the trilogy.

I like the story in ME1, but it did seem rudimentary in its controls.

I enjoyed playing ME2 the most, but I think after I was done with the games, I enjoyed ME 1 the most. In other words... I would get frustrated playing ME1, but after sitting back and taking it all in... it amazed me.

I thought ME2 had a good story, it's just that nothing that happened in it (human reaper, dark energy, the importance of keeping or not the collector base) was followed up on very well. The gameplay and characters were great though.

I really love ME2 and ME1 both though, so it's like choosing between my kids...

I played the crap out of Me1 and then Me2, not so much on Me3. Me2 had a lot of great refinements and very few bugs that are not worth mentioning. Me1 may have had some technical issues and slow elevators, but I spent many of hours on those elevators. The story really was great and the ending was very uplifting.

I also agree that ME1 was the best game in the franchise. Flaws aside, it managed to be one of my favorite games of all time.

Mass Effect 1 was, by far, my favorite of the three.

I thought ME3 will dethrone it up until the very end. As it stands, ME1 is still the best of the three, but if by some mircle Bioware actually manages to provide an ending it deserves, it will be my favourite.

3 - ME 1

Yes, overall 1 is the best for its innovation...and sense of exploration sorely lacking in 2-3.

to me the ME1 has the best story, but I also think that the best overall game is ME2 because it has the best characters, many of the loyalty and dossier missions where pretty interesting, the gameplay was a great improvement and the ending was the most satisfying in the series because your choices and what you did in the game mattered

I agrees. Image IPB I liked everything about ME1.
Though I feel that ME2 had the better characters.

Story goes a long way with me....and imo ME1 has one of the best stories I've seen in a game

ME1 was also waaay more immersive to me....I actually felt like I was but one person in an entire galaxy....yeah there wasn't much in variety of side quests, but it just felt bigger, with alien worlds to traverse....

ME3 could've topped it....but they needed to nail the ending....and they just fumbled it.....

I still like 2 the best, improved gameplay, streamlined inventory and level system, great characters, snappier writing, snappier visual design, felt better paced and more epic. ME1 is still a great game, but lets be real it's long started to show its age.

ME 1 was great story and lore wise. But ME 2 introduced many things about the universe and some retcons can be ignored to make the lore consistent. So I fee like ME 2 was better overall.

ME1 is my favorite of the series. It seemed the biggest (by several orders of magnitude), it had the best story, it had the best ending (even if there wasn't much choice). That said, ME2 had the best character interactions by quite a margin. As awful as all the Collector stuff was, the loyalty missions were light years beyond their ME1 counterparts.

ME3 had the best cutscenes, I'll give it that. With no loyalty missions and very few interactive conversations, character involvement was the lowest of the series (apart from the previously mentioned cutscenes). The story was weaker than ME1's by quite a bit, even without the ending; the Crucible hail mary, while tolerable, wasn't exactly innovative fiction.

I'm not sure which had the best combat. I don't play BioWare games for combat, anyway, though the cooldowns on powers in ME1 made it something of a chore to play (you had to constantly rotate powers, which made it seem much slower). The snap-to-cover thing in ME3 didn't work as well as it should've, and the blatantly obvious cover fields in ME2 were more than a little silly ("Oh, look, a room full of boxes and barrels: firefight incoming.") If I had to pick a favorite for combat stuff, I suppose I'd pick ME2.
