Does anyone else think ME1 is the best game in the trilogy?

As an rpg game, it's without doubts the best in the trilogy.
Me2 and 3 beat the original under certain aspects already described, like better combat system and more focusing on crew mates, making them very fun to play. Actually i'd say me2 is just under the first in my personal preferences, and that's because the main story it's not that great, even if ultimately I equally enjoy replaying both. I won't talk about 3 because...well you know.

I loved ME1, the story, controlls, variety of weapons, enemies and armor. That game had great squadmate interaction ( also loved that they followed me around on the citadel) and it kept me busy for quite some time.
The story of ME2 was great I thought, however it was only a continuation of a strory that was already AMASING!, It managed to surpass ME1 in the squadmate department with such a kick ass variety. However, even with a major graphics update the game felt shorter than ME1 but still had alot of content.
ME 3 seemed like a rushed attempt to wrap up the story. It has great cutscene and graphics quality ( with great load times for levels as well), but the story felt even shorter than in ME2 (maybe for each game in the series should have +1 disks for each new installment). The lack of characters available was also a drawback for me, and the fact that I spent way more collective time in their area of the normandy conversing than being with them on missions is popy****. Weapons were great in ME3 tho, the variety and versatility felt vastly improved from ME1 and 2. The armor locker was cool but took forever to load in many instances (and I hated that I had to rebuy all my armor from ME2
and dont even get me started on the ME3 ending, we all know its FUBAR compared to most of todays games storyline quality ( and I dont give anymore credit to BW going for the "ending that makes you think" strategy b/c that only makes me think less of them...).
IMO, best games in order from best to worse overall >>>> ME1 - ME2 - ME3.

ME 2 having us start off dead is dumb, that's just the way it is. It's dumb. So, I started to worry big time about how silly things might get, but the rest of the story was good.
ME 3 of course shatters ME 1 and ME 2 with existence of Star Child. He is the king of the Reapers and controls them. Which means they weren't sentient machines. Those conversations with Sovereign and Harbinger didn't happen... Star Child didn't need Sovereign to open the Citadel Relay to bring in the rest of the Reapers etc... AKA game shattering character invalidating ME 1 and ME 2.

I miss the eeriness of landing on some uncharted world, exploring a deserted scavenger camp, etc etc. It was repetitive, but I enjoyed it.

I replayed it recently for the billionth time and I still got totally immersed. The combat aggravates me for about 5 minutes and then I get so swept up in the story that I forget all about it.
I wish they could re-release it with the more updated combat engine from 2 and 3. But even as is, it is an utterly fantastic game--so rich in story and detail. Definitely my favorite in the series and my favorite video game of all time.

So in short ignore the ending and then ME3 is the best in series and one of the best game of all time.

I totally agree with this. I found this to be oddly relaxing. I think if they would have kept the mako bits, but added variety to the side missions (i.e. no more copy/pasted buildings) for ME2, it could have been perfect. As much as I love Me2 (it's in a close second), it feels too much like a shooter with better dialogue/story

ME1 has exploration, loadsa sidequests and lotsa gear to customise, but also frustrating combat, repetitive driving and less character development.
ME2 has reduced RPG elements and much less exploration, but more depth of character, funky loyalty missions and some kickass setpieces.
...in my opinion only, of course. Your Mileage May Vary, and often does...

It's a tough call, I really love the loyalty missions of ME2. But overall, ME1 wins out due to the exploration and customization. And WREX

There's just something about the first game that still feels like it's the most genuine of the Mass Effect games. It wasn't a typical "Aliens invade Earth!" or "Humanity is in danger!" storyline that the last two games followed note by note. Every time I read "Take Earth Back" on the ME3 box, I always substitute it with "Break the Cycle", because that has so much more meaning to the franchise as a whole than Earth ever will. Newcomers be darned.

Liara was better in the later games however, and Tali wasn't an LI so that's what I wasn't so fond of. Still the ME1 plot and 'feel' was better than that of the other games.
Yes ME 1 was the best of the trilogy,
It was a trilogy however that failed miserably in its final hour. If the EC is good ME 1 may be redeemed. As it is its a begining to a trilogy that leaves a very bitter taste in your mouth.

I liked ME2 the best. I never finished my first playthrough of ME1, had too many people over at my house in those days. I couldn't get invested into that big of a single player game. Dismissed the game entirely, and I didn't play it again until after I beat ME2 (without an import) and felt the need to go back and create a perfect run-through. After ME2 I found ME1 pretty awkward, but eventually I got past that wall. I actually somewhat prefer the unique "ragdoll" 3rd person shooting over the GoW cover type now, and I can't believe I wasn't in love with the game immediately the first time I played it.
But still, ME2 had the loyalty missions and really made me feel like there we're consequences if I didn't pay close attention as I played. I also loved the amount of characters they introduced, and I was really disappointed that ME3 didn't have the nearly as many squad-mates to choose from.
Also, that first cinimatic scene in ME2 where Shepard is floating through space is my all time favorite intro to a video game.

Things ME1 is best for
ME1 has a huge, beautiful citadel with free-travel and lots to see and explore Plus you use the Normandy's docking bay. ME2 has some corridors. ME3 has 6 rooms, with a universal door between them.
ME1 has combat that can be customised to your playstyle (weapons become more powerful as you spec into them) along with the ability to perform clever combos due to no global cooldown. ME2 has standard shooter combat until you get your god-mode power (hello, Tactical Cloak and Widow sniper rifle), when it becomes tedious. ME3 is god-mode from the start, with rail-shooter turrets (sigh).
ME1 has the awesome Mako which is loads of fun on the random planets and pure gameplay excellence on the scripted missions (the drive to Virmire is perfection). ME2 has Super Mario Hammerhead. ME3 has those rail-shooter sections (cry).
ME1 has a challenging minigame that doesn't require you to move from keyboard to mouse to do. ME2 has the horrible hacking game, the tedious "remember the pairs" lockpicking game and the godawful planetary scanning. ME3 has the pointless planet scanning.
ME1 is a single, unbroken experience. ME2 has "MISSION COMPLETE" screens(!). ME3 scores high here.
ME1 is fairly well paced (although the Citadel section at the start before you get your ship is maybe a little too long). ME2 has a very laid back feel to it, with no particular desire to get to a conclusion due to the huge number of companion side quests that needed to be done before the Suicide Mission. ME3 starts at a high pace then just dies for 10 hours in the middle as the reaper's slaughter of Palaven and Earth is basically forgotten about while you scan the galaxy for some Volus artifact of no import whatsoever. However, from the Asari mission onwards the pacing is near perfect, with continuous brutal combat to the conclusion (excluding spaceboy fail thing).
ME1's ending is great. ME2's ending is great. ME3's ending was cancelled by EA and replaced with that abomination.
ME1 didn't have the horrible controls of the other two. Seriously, one button for run, jump, climb, roll, hide, use and pickup? I lost count of the number of times in the other two games I'd die because instead of sprinting away from danger my shepard would hug a wall (or in 3, do a random forward roll). Also: healing. Also: being able to see your squadmates health and barriers. Also: keybindings for map, journal, inventory, squad. Also: crouch. Also: holster weapon.
Things ME2 is best for
ME1's companions are for the most part annoying (I'd prefer to not have a VS and let that awful racist Ashley and the pathetic Kaiden both die off). ME2 also has its fair share of annoying companions (Jacob is pathetic, Thane is uninteresting, Zaeed says nothing of consequence) but there are enough gems to really make ME2 stand out in this regard. ME3 is disappointing. With the exception of Javik and Liara (the 'canon companions' in my book) the companions are mostly an afterthought that have no development and are entirely devoid of emotion. The frankly laughable chain of people wanting to come to your cabin for sex at the same time made me sigh.
Things ME3 is best for
ME1's inventory system was good, but a little OTT, with you changing out your weapons and armour 5 or 6 times a mission in the early game and at end game binning anything that wasn't the correct prefix. ME2 didn't have an inventory system at all. ME3's was near perfect with the mods and different weapons apart from not being able to see the stats of weapons before you equip them (nothing like spending 250k on a weapon that you won't use).
ME3 had more epic moments (Mordin sacrificing himself, the Thresher Maw, Tali setting foot on Rannoch). ME2 only really had the final scene while ME1 had Vermire and the ending.
Overall: ME1 wins over ME2 with ME3 being far behind the other two.

Two thumbs up for the excellent summary! I agree with your conclusion.

Yes, I liked the elevator rides. They gave me a connection; they made urgent matters feel more urgent. I liked that you could run around the Presidium, to the Wards and back again without going through a single load screen (other than the elevators). It made the world seem bigger even with fewer npc's doing much of anything.
The fact that I could talk to many of those npc's and get missions from them or help them with their problems was also a bonus.
Yes, the Inventory was tedious to the extreme, but they certainly didn't need to go as far in the other direction as they did in ME2. We lost not only customization, but ACTUAL stats for our weapons that have not returned.
I miss putting Colossus armour on Tali and Liara. Predator L/M/H armour for Shep and Kaidan/Ash. I miss the Phantom armour for Garrus and the Geth Armoury armour for Wrex.
I miss the Mako. I don't miss it's physics, but I do miss the drive and the "holy s***!" response I always felt when a Thresher Maw appeared even though I knew it was there.
I miss trying to find the Matriarch's writings, the Turian Insignias and the resources because I had to actually make an effort to find them often on a planet and not just by needlessly shooting probes from space onto a planet. Heck, even the space scanning was better than in ME2&3 just because it was as simple as it needed to be. We NEVER needed this stupid planet scanning system they wasted so much money on in ME2&3.
I don't miss every Asari mook shouting "I will destroy you!".
I don't miss the weapon certifications.
I didn't mind the cut-and-paste bunkers, etc, but I actually preferred the connected N7 missions from ME2.
I miss ME1.
