Does anyone else think ME1 is the best game in the trilogy?

Nope, OP. Can't go along with this one.

ME1 has the best, most coherent story and a real sense of awe like the first time you step into the presidium. But it also has the clunky inventory, poor controls and the horrid combination of mako + mountains.

ME2... The story is barely there, and they went too far in removing the clunky inventory by replacing it with none at all. The character development is pretty damned good, though, and the controls are much tighter.

ME3, I loved everything but the plannet scanning fetch quests, and of course spacebrat. Best combat mechanics, no tedious vehicle sections, fantastic moments on Rannoch and Tuchanka, as well as some fun squad interactions.

All in all, it ends up a three way tie for me, but I'm more likely to replay ME2 a year from now. 1 just annoys me too much with the gameplay mechanics these days, and 3 really needs the ending fixed. Do that, though, and ME3 is my winner by a landslide.

ME1 is the best. It saddens me that the rest of the trilogy didn't live up to its potential.

Hah, yes - I miss the "holy s***" moments with the Trasher Maws.

ME1 actually offered us a much more immersive context to dive in. There were different environments to explore, NPCs to interact with, different vendors, sub-plots. Even the side quests were varied. Can anyone seriously say they enjoyed the scanning (esp. ME2)?

I HATED the scanning.  I would've prefered the Anomaly scanning method with side missions that actually put you on the planet.  That is what ME2 got right in terms of scanning, instead of the endless resource mining.  God did that get old, and I was so glad that I got ridiculous amounts of every resource for beating both ME1 and ME2 and then replaying ME2.

I don't understand what people do not like about Mass Effect 1 combat.

In almost every way it is more action oriented than ME 2 and 3's duck and shoot borefests.

The only real problem was the invincibility on enemies which caused them to take forever to kill if you didn't CC them before shooting. But seeing as players had access to so many abilities that all had their own cooldowns this really wasn't a problem. And that is really why ME 1 combat is superior in every way to 2 and 3, you have tons of abilities to use all the time so that by the middle of the game you are never left sitting behind cover waiting for your shield to recharge so that you can get off two potshots before having to duck behind cover and wait for your shields to recharge again.

ME 3 actually had the worst combat in the series because there is no more hp healing at all which really makes combat and missions blow.
