Does anyone else think ME1 is the best game in the trilogy?

And I'm not a big fan of ME3's actual combat gameplay, too fast paced, poor rifles like the M8 are super accurate, reloads are super fast, powers travel a lot faster... No need for CODzation of gameplay.

I thought ME3 will dethrone it up until the very end. As it stands, ME1 is still the best of the three, but if by some mircle Bioware actually manages to provide an ending it deserves, it will be my favourite.
Same opinion. Overall ME1 has the best story overall. ME3 however had the potential to easily dethrone it, with added benefit of having superior gameplay. Beginning was a bit dodgy and ending utterly destroyed the game, but what is inbetween is pure brilliance.

mixed evrything young and old ppl would like to see and the controls were greatly improved
now if they had added the ME3 controls in 2 that would have been the best of the triology considereing all the aspects of the game*

That being said, I still prefer ME1 over any of the trilogy. If only you could fuse ME1 storyline along with ME2 character cast choices and slick mission where no time is wasted roaming around, then you would have an ideal game.
But yes, by far, ME1 remains the standard. I still get chills replaying the ending. I totally expected ME3 to surpass the ME1 ending and then...
How could Bioware screw up so royally? How can they still screw up with their decision to leave in that ending and try to explain it? It just doesn't make sense.

ME1 has the most (at least illusion of) control over the dialogue.
ME1 has the best squad makeup (imo).
ME1 has the best antagonist (Saren is a perfect anti-Shepard)
ME1 portrayed the Reapers as unimaginable horrors, which I quite liked.
ME1 had the most and best choices. (imo)
ME2 had loyalty missions, which I liked, but there were too many.
ME2 had the suicide mission, which was fantastic, but should have been in the 3rd game (too many variables for the second game, which taxed their resources in the 3rd.)
ME2 had the best DLC (Overlord and LotSB are INCREDIBLE)
ME2 had the best graphical art style (imo)
ME2 had the most hubs.
ME3 had the best combat.
ME3 had the best weapon/armor system
ME3 had the best written dialogue (However the lack of options here, or at least the lack of the illusion of options, really hampers this for me.)
Cons for each:
ME1 had the worst combat.
ME1 Oh god the inventory system.
ME1 Oh god the Mako.
ME1's dialogue was a bit awkward at times.
ME1 had the worst graphics.
ME2 didn't touch on the main plot enough (good plot, but left too much for the 3rd game to do)
ME2 didn't have Liara as a squadmate (Liara fanboi, very sad.)
ME2 forced us to work for/with Cerberus (important to the plot yadayada. I didn't like it.)
ME3 had almost no illusion of choice in dialogue, and really forced emotions and opinions down our throats.
ME3 had the dream sequences... HATED these.
ME3 undid a lot of our choices, or made them irrelevant.
ME3 had the damn fetch quests.
ME3 had Kai Leng... I can't stand any scene he appears in save the one you get to finally kill him.
ME3 from Thessia and on felt horribly rushed.
ME3 The endings... THE ENDING. GOD DAMNIT.
Anyway.
It's pretty close for me between ME1 and ME2, but ME1 had the better plotline and had Liara as a squadmate (easily my favorite character), and frankly I've never played ME for the gameplay, it was always about the plot, the characters, and the world. ME1 does the plot and characters best (imo at least), ME2 does the world the best.
Overall, I give ME1 first place, with ME2 a close second. ME3... let's just pretend it never happened.

ME1 is the best except for three things. Mako was terrible, running around in that vehicle looking for resources sucked bunches. Second, the lack of variance in many of the side mission, all planets/environment blended into each other. Third, combat system was clunky as heck.
I actually loved the Mako, the problem as you said was that it was essentially all the same. I don't really think the answer to that was to cut out exploration entirely. And at least the resource missions in ME1 were optional. In ME2, you had to tediously scan planets without even the fun of that drunken cow steering or you couldn't research any of the upgrades, and not getting the ship upgrades screwed you in the CB assault.
ME1 was definitely the best of the series for me, followed by 2. The Tuchanka and Rannoch arcs in 3 were epic, but the rest of the game didn't really measure up.

mostly agreed except for favorite characters... Mine was Harbinger, and he appeared as a cameo in ME3. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/uncertain.png[/smilie]
BW is producing worse plots with every sequal it makes ever since EA took over. I wonder when this plot quality deteriorating will be finally over. At this rate in 5 years Blizzard will have a better story in games.

ME2 was the game I started playing first, then bought 1. I enjoyed 2 for its gameplay and story. So in my opinion ME2 was the best.
ME could have been the best...but, no.

ME2 had the perfect pace and kept me immersed the ENTIRE time. It followed a non-linear plotline and had totally unexpected twists that kept me on the edge of my seat (Shepard dying, discovering the Protheans true fate and discovering at least partially what the Reapers motives were to name a few). It was completely character-driven and that was the best part. A wider range of characters gave you more freedom of choice, plus each of them was a qualified badass. Everything you had done throughout the game tied back beautifully into the main plot at the end of the game (Reapers, destruction blah blah). I didn't think the over-arching story was weak at all, it just showed that there was more to the Mass Effect universe when you weren't racing against time to stop an imminent Reaper invasion. This freedom made for the most well-written, funny, epic and involving game in the trilogy.
ME3 had fantastic gameplay but I found the overall story to be a bit disapointing. All our major decisions from Mass Effect 1 & 2 were turned into meaningless points that in the end amounted to absolutely nothing. Squad characters, even returning ones, were less interesting this time around and the ending was unforgivable. They polished the graphics and combat to great standard, but they seemed to abandon their greatest strength: characters and story. <_<

ME1's story was amazing, but damn the game play is clunky. I'm currently in the process of replaying ME1, which I hadn't touched in a few years, and it is a struggle. That game really has not held up.

Harbinger and the Collectors were an appropriately menacing enemy.
We got Illium, the Citadel, Omega and Tuchanka as hub worlds.
The Suicide Mission is the best level in any video game ever.

ME2 had the best end game in sheer epic nature.
ME3 had the strongest combat of the two, but the weakest ending.
