It has a lot of flaws, but it's still my favourite of the series.

To me Mass Effect 1 is the best indeed, the exploration, story, music, and everything.

It's definitely not the best gameplay wise, by A LONG SHOT. It has terrible frame-rate issues, at least on my Xbox. Plus exploring in the Mako is only fun the first time. After a few hundred times it gets really, really frustrating. And you can't even RUN for very long. A lot of time is wasted getting from point A to point B.

The inventory system was also badly designed, at least in my opinion.

But the story, oh did it ever get me hooked. Considering all the problems with the game, I still absolutely love it. I think that says something about the characters and the story.

Definitely my favorite in the series. All the things people disliked about it, I loved. Mako, elevators, tons of loot, ect. Story wise, it was my favorite too. I do like some of the missions in 3 the best (Rannoch & Tuchanka), but overall 1 is still king.

Reasons ME1 was the best:

1. Vigil
2. Vigil
3. Vimire mission. Sountrack was amazing and I thought it would make a comeback in ME3!!!
4. It was a real RPG.

Yes for the story; HELL NO for that damn Mako driving during the volcanic rock missions. Can't count how many times I ended up stuck in a damn crater and having to reboost back to the Normandy to try again to reach that little dot up atop some random mountain.

I wish the Hammerhead had made it into ME3, I missed the actual planet exploration (just not the clunky driving of the Mako), though it WAS nice to see the old tank show back up in London

I think ME1 had better stories and structure (it's so vast!), but I like the characters in ME2 so much more, so I end up kind of torn about things.

I feel like:

ME1 created this amazing, vast universe for me to tool around in (also, Wrex)
ME2 gave me this crew that I am heavily emotionally invested in (My Shepard's OTL is Thane, Legion expanded her outlook of what it means to be alive in so many ways, Garrus and Tali grew up leaps and bounds, and generally the world became a more morally vague place)
ME3 had the most punched in the gut moments, the heroic sacrifices, the meaning of loss and hope.

:/ At least until the ending.

I love 2 the most because it was a perfect mix of RPG and Shooter

Regardless of what the ending DLC, ME will hold #1 in my heart, as it was the first. It was the first time I experienced my favorite game universe in gaming history.

Let the flaming commence, I liked exploring in the Mako. The planets all seemed different, seeing various skies and moons, colors, textures, weather, etc.

No flaming necessary. I'm right there with you. It is the one aspect I missed in 2 & 3.

Mass Effect 1: Characters and story was top notch, Virmire is one of the top 5 missions in the game, Ilos is haunting, specially after playing ME3. Clunky Gameplay, Inventory management, and realy weird learning curve. really good and quirky music

Mass Effect 2: Great characters, ok storyline, fun gameplay, really streamlined, a bit too much, Some fun missions, but all in all fell formulatic. kind of meh music for the most part, but dat illusive man theme and dat Normandy Reborn

Mass Effect 3: Great dialogue, fleshes out and ties plot points and character arcs in a very good way, ****ty balance, noticeable cuts around the corners, full of crowning moments of awesomeness, ****ty ending and lack of closure.

Count me in too. Hell, I named my car the Mako because of how much I liked speeding along in it in the first game. It made me want to really explore.

No

Either ME 2 or ME 3. I'll do another ME 2 round on Normal to feel the game one more time.

It's beginning to sound like LOTR TT.   I do miss the Mako, I even partly miss the Hammerhead.  Why we couldn't steal an Atlas, scrub it of bugs, paint it, and leave in the Hangar for missions.

I'd like to throw in my support of the Mako as well. Never understood all the hate. It's far better than the "talk on the Citadel, scan a planet and return" side "missions" on ME3.

Not even close, but I like it.  Chore quests are reasonably better than poor missions or Mineral scanning.  However, we should have a Mako, even as decoration.

Question, why are Mako's still Red and white even though Alliance Regs are Blue and White?  Did you miss something Bioware?

I thought ME1 was the greatest, even if the combat was bad. The story and setting was fresh. It felt like playing KoToR to be honest.

Best – ME1
2nd – ME2
3rd - ME3

ME1 had the most concise and relevant story arc. The characters were better in ME2, but I actually liked the combat better in ME1. Specifically, the ability to use more than one ability at a time. When I first played ME2 it drove me crazy that when you used one ability they all went into cool down. Also, I enjoyed the Mako and there was a lot more of a mix of tasks and combat in ME1. By ME3 I felt that combat was almost continuous sometimes.

ME1's ending was the best out of the three. Conventional, but that may be why it was well-received. I also liked how we could tackle the main missions in any order. I'm still disappointed that in ME2 we could not recruit any squad member at any time, rather than being restricted to one set of squad members and then moving on to another set. ME3's progression was more linear, but it makes sense considering the state of urgency. The streamlining didn't take too much away from the characters though.

Excepting the ending, ME3 is my favorite.
Including endings, ME1 is definitely my favorite--texture/sound problems and all.
Best romance scenes, best planet-scanning, love the music, the end song, the thrill of discovery, hanars ftw, making Verner cry, etc. etc. I'm replaying it right now, and every time I play it (this is my 5th), I'm delighted by how much fun it is. :D

ME1 had the best story with the most detail. But the gameplay was clunky in controls plus had a really bad case of repeating maps. I liked the Mako, but when exploring planets it just felt like I had to run straight up mountains to get where I wanted to go. It was very tedious.

However, I'd vote for ME2 having the best overall game. The simplicity and fixing of the combat system, the journals, the repercussions of your actions throughout the game (didn't upgrade/do loyalty missions? made bad calls? Tough luck.). The focus on each character was good as well.

I thought it was really cool how ME1 and ME2 were so incredibly different in feel and gameplay and storytelling, yet each was an amazing game in its own right.
