Yep, the gameplay was not the best, but then again I never got into the Mass Effect series because I expected Call of Duty. It worked fine for me.

The story from beginning to end was the best out of the trilogy and made any game play faults disappear.

Funny how that works out, later games have highly refined shooty bits, but the stories were never as satisfying.

I like ME1 the best. It was an awesome story in an awesome world.

ME2 was just bizarre to me, most of the game was in character sidequests that made no sense to do while the collectors were killing people, that game had great characters but a nonsense story.

ME3 was fun, but I feel they got too epic in their scope. I thought the Crucible was a stupid macguffin from the very moment it was introduced. I would have preferred the reapers stayed like lovecraftian elder gods: the goal is not to fight them, but to never let them in.

ME1 is my favorite (mostly for it's story). But I still consider ME2 the best. It surpassed ME1 in nearly every way

Most definitely. My favorite moments, favorite squadmates, favorite antagonists, favorite mission (Virmire), best written and paced story.

Followed by ME3 and then ME2 in third.

You must live in a different world to place ME3 anywhere on that list....

Why do people think that me1 is the best of the trilogy, other than is story Me2 and Me3 are better.

ME1 had the best story (worst weapons and armor. why do I have a sniper rifle if I can't use it))
ME2 had you care about the other characters (so best supporting characters)
ME3 had the best battle and gameplay (worst story progression. it was good until after Thessia. IMO. lots of guns and armor) wish they had the hammerhead or mako in a level or two

Actually the general consensus seems to be that Mass Effect 2 is the best in the trilogy.

ME is my favorite. ME2 was serviceable, and had much better gameplay, but I think it was lacking. ME3 has the best gameplay, but the story and tone are turnoffs, and the ending is basically untenable.

I'm not sure if ME3 would be better than ME2 if the ending weren't so bad, but I don't think I'll ever like either more than ME.

1, was my favorite.i let it sit on my shelf unopened aroundt about the time 2 came out. i proceeded to put 150 hrs in it, straight. It was a whole new world for me. I really enjoyed it. 2, was fun. I enjoyed ther characters. The citadel really disappointed me in 2. It took away the from the world, and the scanning sucked. I liked the exploration better. 3, was great for about 98%.

my break down:
1 awesome sauce
3 98%
2 scanning and citadel sucked

just my opinion.

i still get goose bumps when the alliance shows up to stop sovereign. that is my space magic!

Not with its completely broken combat system and cut and paste planets and environments, no.

Its really tough. For me, ME1 felt identical to kotor, but ME2 set it apart. The much improved combat and absolutely fantastic character development is what sells me on me2. It makes me feel like i really know these characters in real life. The romance arc for jack especially blows me away.

If ME3 would have just included more of my me2 squadmates it could have topped it. 10 lines of jack isnt enough. However, downloading From Ashes my 2nd playthough brought me back to me2 days. Javik was nicely done

Overall I still think I like ME1 the most, it's just the only real rpg in the series.
And frankly I'd take the Mako exploration over the scanning minigame every time.
Apart from that ME2 topped it in almost every other category and ME3 topped 2 in many categories, but also had the worst journal and the most boring side quests in all three games. And of course with the clusterf**ck ending 3 has no chance to win.

As for story, it is really hard for me to separate it, as I see it as one big story rather than three interlocked ones.
I think the overall story might be better in ME!, but squad interaction and characterization was vastly improved in 2 and to me that's also part of what makes a story good.

Me1 was mostly just pointless boring side missions. With a limited campaign. However it was the opposite of ME3. Most of it was crap yet right at the end with Virmire, Ilos and onwards was so good that it became one of my favourite games.
ME1: crapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrapawesome --> left me happy.
ME3: awesomeawesomeaweseomawesomeunbelievablycrap --> Left me sad.

ME1's story is definitely the most structurally sound, and the most solid from start to finish. However, I really didn't connect with its squad -- even characters like Garrus and Tali didn't come alive for me until ME2.

I just (literally 10 minutes ago) finished a marathon run of ME1, 2 and 3 (the ending still made me mad, so I came here to see if everyone was still raging).

ME1 is still the best story wise
ME2 is the most exciting to play
ME3 has the best combat system

Well, best on what scale? ME1 had a lot of it's pros but… well a good game is always a right point of balance betwenn good story (not actually only a story, i just group all narrative-related things here) and good gameplay (yeah, the fun of mashing buttons around) and most importantly their connection to each other.

I agree. I also love the story in ME1, but the gameplay is definitely better in ME3.

I disagree with the majority here. Do I guess right that with "story" you only mean the reaper part? Because if you take that plotline out of it the story of ME2 isn't as thin as many people say it is. Sure, the reapers aren't the main thing, but you get many more details about the universe and other conflicts. Introducing Legion and Cerberus for example was pretty important imho. Let's also not forget the Quarians and Mordin - two parts that lead to some of the most emotional scenes in gaming history.

Basically ME1 introduced the main conflict and the universe, ME2 strenghtened the bonds to your companions and gave you a better understanding of the viewpoints of each species, ME3 was all about conclusions.

As an overall experience it was a straight ladder for me. ME1 < ME2 < ME3. Every part improved.
I do agree though that ME1 had more "Wow!" moments than the second one. Before ME3 I thought ME2 was weak storywise as well, but ME3 proved me wrong.

ME1 is good but it is not as good as ME2 and ME3.

ME1 has very limited conversation. Talk to your squad aboard Normandy, the conversation and its choices are very very limited. Nobody has anything interesting or new to say 70% of the game.

Example, you stumbled upon Geth Data and gave it to Tali, she wont have anything to say to you after that. Every time Liara "embrace eternity" the conversations are EXACTLY the same.

The ship feels empty!
