Does anyone else think ME1 is the best game in the trilogy?

Logical as a customer I assumend that logically the glitches and problems will be fixed and even made better in a future succsessor. Instead they told us, what customers want, made some more action orienteded gameplay, cutted down rpg (which was very important for immersive story support).
ME2 was good. But only because they had the luck of balancing this with the IMHO very good loyalty Missions, strong chracters again and IMHO the Para/Rene-Options while the dialogues are running.
ME3 just failed there nearly completely even I had some fun with it. (the first 80 - 90 %).
So my favorites are ME1 > ME 2 > ME 3... so sad to see.
Same impression with the DA-Series.
It seems that you only can buy BW/EA-Games if they introduce a new brand... after this.. cash cow rules!
Just my very own impression!!!

Story wise: ME3 > ME1 > ME2
Personal entertainment: ME3= ME2 = ME1
As far as the series go, it kept getting better and I enjoyed all three games just as much. No way I could say ME1 was the best in the series though.

...I don't think so. ME1 was good as prologue and game's prototype. Don't get me wrong, I completed ME1 many times, but still don't think the game was very good.
ME2 is where the ME truely begins... So it was very good idea to make interactive comic for players, who want to recreate ME1 story without actually playing ME1.

ME1 was a shocker and a great story.
ME2 was all about great characters with a story lost because of ME3's solutions, not it's own quality.
ME3 was great on moments, but too often felt rushed. ME1&ME2 didn't leave such feeling in the mouth.

I would assume that the people who like ME1 best are the more fanatical rpg players and the people who like the latter games are more of the shooter or causal gmae rkind.

ME1 had better "main" story
ME2 had better characters (and it was about characters too) and managed to keep the hype alive
ME3 had better "HOLY **** BLOWING UP STUFF IS FUN" combat and emotional scenes

ME2 had the best character interactions. The story was strong by itself, but didn't connect much with the first one. It did also have the most satisfactory conclusion of the three, even though there were really only two similar endings (which shows, it's not the number but the execution).
ME3 was doing a decent job in wrapping things up until you landed back on Earth. I think they didn't push the barrow out far enough though, a lot was similar to ME2. It did beat even ME1 for good mission environments though, Palaven's moon was just fantastic.
See, each had something good going for it. I can't really pick a best though, because they all have one major flaw which can't push them above the others. The first one was the clunky inventory interface, the second was the general disconnect in the story to the other two, and the third one was Priority: Earth and starchild.

If you look at the whole picture? No, both 2 and 3 have a lot of strengths that weigh up for the medium stories.

This pretty much. I'd say ME2 and ME1 are on the same level seeing as how ME2 seriously improved on everything (gameplay, dialogue, side missions, emotional impact, style, etc) aside from RPG elements and story. Where as ME1 was the exact opposite, although its RPG elements really werent all that great to start with.
ME3 I'd say improved on both ME1 and 2 aside from the ending. The auto-dialogue and Kasumi/Zaeed dialogue with teammates is actually an improvement to me. And the DLC char dialogue is there in the first place to fill up the moments where your team mates wouldnt be saying anything different in the first place anyway.

agreed. Palaven was my favorite place to fight in in the game. That was an amazing mission environment.

Sure, ME2 had tighter combat, better inventory and more interesting environments. Sure, ME3 had more emotion-tugging moments and even better combat.
But ME2 was shafted by a plot that felt suffered from being the middle child, and became far too much "recruitment, check, conversation a, check loyalty, check, conversation b, check." between the main missions. And ME3's ending... need I say more.
Mass Effect has a... magic to it that the other two just cannot match. I can't put my finger on exactly what it is: maybe the discovery of a new Galaxy, the feeling of bigness, the plot which actually feels mysterious while making sense, and progresses at a decent rate, the far more minimal soundtrack, I don't know. I love turning the difficulty down to easy mode and just drinking it all in.
