ME1 is my favorite, but ME2 has more replay value. But if I judge them on one playthrough I'd pick ME1 every time. Saren/Sovereign>Collectors/Harbinger, Council Spectre>TIMs Agent Noveria>Illium/Omega, ME1 Citadel>ME2 Citadel, etc.

Outside of Miranda and Mordin none of the ME2 exclusives were better than the VS, Liara or Wrex I thought. So yeah ME1 is far better for me other than the gameplay.

Sums up my thoughts too.  While I love Miranda, Mordin, and Legion from ME2 I would have preferred to see Liara, Wrex, and the VS join them as full squaddies again.  Plus, ME1 had Kirrahe holding the line.

Pretty much that for me too.

ME1 had the better story and epic feel to it. ME3 has the best gameplay and combat of the series.

Mass effect one was no doubt in my mind the best in the series. Althought the combat left much to be desired, the main story was so grand. It established most of the fiction present in the universe in a way that felt natural and coherent, from the beautiful presidium to the blue steel hue of the interior of the normandy. In my opinion both ME2 and ME3 added little to the established lore and served only to diminish the amazing foundation set by ME1. On top of this all ME1 in my opinion boasted the best soundtrack with its techno funk.

However ME1 has one major problem with it... the promise of a story where your actions actually matter and your decisions will shape the entire universe. This lie from bioware will have you in tears for weeks.

ME1&2. ME1 is best from game-play and storytelling perspective. ME2 is little better on choices and quests mechanics but larva reaper in the end is not satisfying (as I know BW cut some content because of deadlines) and I really miss open for discovery planets. Maybe they are not polished enough but they provide unique atmosphere for the ME1.

ME was the worst in many respects. The combat was broken, the inventory was just horrible, and the character system sucked. However, the story and how it unfolded was amazing, and there was this incredible sense of adventure in exploring the galaxy. The atmosphere was so dense, you could cut it with a chainsaw.

That's why I think ME is the best of the trilogy.

Mass Effect is my favorite by far. An RPG with action elements, as opposed to an action game with RPG elements.

I can't pick one. ME1 had better inmersion and also, being the first, felt new. The main plot was great.
ME 2 had way better gameplay, the main plot was soso, but many sidequest and interrupts gave a great cinematic style. If you merged both you get the perfect product :P

I feel the same, I loved Mass effect 1. I believe the concepts it introduced, and the way it make me felt during the game... they were awesome.

Mass Effect 2 and 3 are also amazing - except the plotholes :P - but, for me, it was the first one that was the best overall.

I played ME2 before ME1. It was hard to downgrade.
ME2 definitely has better overall and plays much smoother. But ME1 sure has a great immersive story. There's movie material in there.

Minus the clunky FPS mechanics (they fixed it in ME2)... it is THE definitive Mass Effect game. planet exploration, bigger skill trees, hacks that required more skill, Mako, actually TALKING to people, talking to squadmates in the citadel.. squadmates talking in the elevators, painful decisions (save boring Kaidan or **** Ashley) I could go on..

ME2 was a more streamlined experience, but it was really dumbed down. as a friend of mine calls it, "Consolitis", the dumbing down of PC games for consoles.

ME3 is even worse. At least the characters are still there.. it's about the only thing I that made me play the game.. I just wanted to see how everything plays out. and then the ending happened.

ME1 hands down. For the most part, I think I preferred the gameplay from it. The only real issue gameplay wise was weak level design. Too much reused assets IMO. They only had two spaceship interiors dangit lol.

Definitely my favourite story wise, I ignore the clunky controls and drive the Mako very carefully...mostly..

not everything was perfect but for me it was the only one that seemed somehow more then the sum of it parts

Couldn't agree more.

Sure the combat was a bit clunky and that inventory was a pain at times, but I loved everything about it, including the mako (was one of my favourite past times to roam terrain and flip the damn thing).

Out of trilogy, nothing will ever beat the  "oh my god what!?" reaction I had when the twist was revealed that the citadel was a trap/giant mass relay for the reapers. :wizard:

Best story as a story goes to ME1. It was original and epic and skipping the clunky cut scenes and sometimes awkward dialogues it had great story moments throughout.

However that being said my favourite game is ME2. The combat was so much better than ME1 and I really enjoy the characters in the Mass Effect world, so I was pretty happy that most of ME2 IS the characters. Also LotSB really helped this as it was another purely character driven story, just what I like.

ME3's story was... ok... but it was always going to be the same. We knew the reapers were going to invade and so with that restriction in respect I thought the storyline was great... until the last 5 mins but lets not go there.

Not even starbrat lol.

To be fair my reaction to ME1 twist was a good one.

The ME3 starbrat reaction was...yeah...on the other end of the scale, which isnt a good thing at all.

Mass Effect was probably my overall favorite, it's the one I replay the most.
I like the squad in ME2 the best, and I love how they developed them through loyalty missions, but the collector storyline was pretty unsatisfying.

It had a good, well thought out story that wasn't riddled with ploy-holes.

ME1 was my favourite of the series, too. I loved ME2, but I genuinely didn't understand the number of people saying it was better than the first. And I loved ME3 (until the end, which I HATED), but still ME1 was the best.

Its funny if ME had been less successful, but still enough to warrant ME2 it might not have been Call of Dutied to the degree it has been.
