I've run through the game 4x already (despite the crap ending, the game is still hella fun) but have never touched anything other than RPG (i.e REAL ME) mode. If anybody has played it I have a few questions.

1. Is there any down time between missions or are you just on rails the entire time, going from one mission to the next?

2. Can you use the galaxy map?

3. Can you have conversations with people?

4. Can you customize your weapons/choose weapons?

5. Do you get a pre-determined LI?

6. Can you choose a class?

I don't think you can do action mode on an import, so I've never even seen the option yet. I am curious as well.

Ok so I decided to start a new game (no import) on action mode to see what would happen. I'll go ahead and answer my own questions since I'm sure some are curious.

1. Yes. You can travel throughout the Normandy and the Citadel as you normally would.

2. Yes the galaxy map is available as always. You can go to other planets, do missions and nab war assets.

3. Yes you can but the conversations are totally out of your control. Interestingly enough you can still do Paragon/Renegade interrupts. The conversations so far seem more geared toward Renegade options.

4. Yes you can still customize weapons/armor as well as buy upgrades at stores. You can still use the weapon wheel and change your or your squad's weapons on the fly.

5. This one I haven't seen yet. I'm playing as a femshep and Kaiden is alive. Maybe it will pick him?

6. No you can't choose a class. You're automatically a Soldier. You also cannot customize your character's face or choose how to deal out your own or your squad's xp points when you level up.

Also since this is a new game, characters throw a lot more exposition at you. For example Liara explains who the shadow broker was and how she became the new one (Shep wasn't around for this). Also when the Illusive man appears for the first time, one of your squad members goes "Look! It's the head of Cerberus, the Illusive man!"

I'll keep on playing this mode and update this post since it seems like no one on this board has played a new non import game on action mode.

I wonder if you still spend hours running around the Citadel overhearing conversations and doing fetch quests. That kind of thing was fun the first playthrough, but is really getting on my nerves for the second playthrough. Still - if action is reserved only for Soldier and doesn't let you upgrade on your own (from what I remember of the demo) it's really not for me at all.

You can still run around the Citadel and do the fetch quests.  And yeah, you're a Soldier and you can't upgrade your powers on your own. You can still mod weapons and buy upgrades for them and still mix and match different armor types and still wear different casual clothes. From what I've experience so far only conversations, leveling and character face customization, background and name are affected in action mode. Everything else is the same.

"Can" is not the same as "have to"  It's funny to remember that before it's release everyone thought this game was going to be a mindless shooter for the COD and GAW crowd. Boy, were they wrong.

I'm a fool button? jk. but no, and I don't think anyone who understands English will choose that option in their first play

You can customize you and your squad powers. Leve up customization It is an option found in the menu. Disable it and you can do whatever you want with your Soldier and your team.

You can turn any play through into actions mode by going into the menus after first Earth attack and disable the dialog choices. That way you can customize your Shep's face and class or use an import. You can disable the auto-level ups to have control of point allotments in Action mode.

You know, the more I think about it, the more that "Action mode" and "Story mode" don't really make much sense.

Like some of you have been saying, you can make any playthrough "action mode" (or conversely, "story mode") by adjusting the options. If you already have the ability to tweak the game in this fashion, then why even have "Action" or "Story" modes to begin with? I was under the impression that these alternate modes were modes that were set in stone but if you can change them up on the fly then I really don't see the point of their inclusion.

Anyway if anyone cares about my progress I just finished the mission on Surkesh. It seems like all of the pre-determined choices (I'm also playing a new game with no import) are Renegade choices. Since I've already done a Renegade run 2x I don't know if I'm gonna keep on playing this. I was curious to see which LI the game would choose for Shep but I'm guessing that someone will eventually find out and post it on the wiki.

Well, that's pretty annoying that you can only be a soldier. I figured action mode would be great on later playthroughs if I just wanted to try out some exotic class build without worrying about the story, but it sounds like they neutered the combat customization AND the story, which makes no sense. Bleh.

You can be any class you want and still play the game in action mode. Instead of choosing action mode pick rpg or story mode, customize your character and choose a class you want to try out. When you get into the game just go to options and make conversations and leveling automatic. It's essentially Action mode if you do that.

I really don't get why this mode was implemented . Does anyone really think the decissions , skill system and dialogue in the game are too complex ?

I mean the combat system never was ME's strong suit and even though its gotten alot better it still is not all that great to begin with.

Storymode i get even though its nothing but a super duper easy difficulty that got a special mode name for whatever reason but action mode ?

I mean i can auto level up if i want to as well. Why do i need this action mode ? What purpose does it serve ?

Worse, that Bioware has no understanding at all, what a shooter kiddie or a player int he fifth walktrough wants. If i can't skip most of dialogs and cinematics, Bioware has broken two modes, not just the ending and the face import:
Normal Mode: No skippable sequences.
Action Mode: No skippable sequences, and if i want to play a soldier, i play Gears of War and the Renegade side isn't made for adults.
Story Mode: If you want a story, read a book.

This.

IF action-mode gave us the opportunity to test new builds in action without all the other fuss it would be great.

I'd rather have an option to take your single-player squad into mutliplayer rounds by yourself.

After playing Action mode for a few hours this is the conclusion I came to as well.

What is the point of specifically calling it "Action mode"? I know that people in general are dumb but I refuse to believe that gamers are so stupid that they can't figure out how to make leveling and conversations automatic on their own.
