I thought Dues Ex Machina or whatever it is.
What did you think the crucible would do before you found out what it actually did?

Weaken the Reapers somehow, so that the fleets would actually stand a chance against the Reapers in a conventional war. Then let the War Assets take over on whether or not victory is possible.

At first i thought it might be something like the mass accelerator weapon that killed the reaper we find in ME2.

Give people beehives for hands to punch out the reapers. Would've been a better ending.

I think I always suspected it would be a magical Reaper destroying device. But I hoped it would do something smaller, like block indoctrination or something to give us the upper hand.

Either that it would not work or that it would somehow disable the Reapers, weaken them in some way so then all the war assets could go and give them a good kicking.

Kill Reapers

I had though it was a Dark Energy cannon of some kind that needed some form of a lens (the Catalyst as Hackett mentioned). I technically wasn't that far off of what really happened, but it happened a lot differently than what I thought would happen. It was less a cannon and more a radio signal generator that needed a special antenna.

I thought it was going to be an ultra long range artillery weapon that could fire upon and destroy Reapers halfway across the galaxy even if they were moving in FTL.

To be honest i thought it was a superweaponnthat would kill all life. And like mass effect be given the choice to either sacrifice the universe to kill the reapers or make the game lastba little longer by searching for a piece that would make the crucible only target the reapers

A super weapon (that was obvious) that could kill the Reapers all of them for that matter as only one at the time would be unreliable.
In Destroy everything I wish for was granted.

I thought it would either (1) not work or (2) be a trap.

Honest response? Since the Dark Energy ending was out, I thought it was gonna be a superweapon and later on, when Shepard activated it, we'd find out it was actually a failsafe built by whatever species created the Reapers in case they went Nny on the entire galaxy.
Simple and cheap, I know, but still better than "PICK A COLOR! ANY COLOR! And now sit back and enjoy as I don't explain how my amazing magical toys are going to screw the galaxy over!"

I was open to what it might do but if I had to guess, it would do something to disable the reapers so we could win.
I never expected space kid.

I thought it was going to be a space ship of some sort, but with one mega-cannon on the front that was capable of outright destroying a Reaper or being able to disable it so that Alliance ships could finish it off. I expected to see the many races of the galaxy whizzing their ships around this thing, trying to keep enemy ships off so that it could fire and destroy the Reapers one at a time. After all, there really isn't that many, they're just extremely powerful.
Of course, at some point the ship would become damaged, but they'd probably figure that Harbinger 'ASSUMED DIRECT CONTROL' over all the Reapers, so the final mission would be to board the critically damaged Harbinger Reaper and destroy it from the inside.

My thoughts were the Cruicible could be used to [remotely, temporarily] deactivate Mass Effect cores. With a high enough science EMS [or keeping the Collector Base] I imagined that you could focus the effects to just shut down Reaper ME cores. Maybe even duration, side effects, etc. would vary depending on Science EMS.
Military EMS could be used to figure out how effective you are at killing off the Reapers while their shields are down and they can't just run away ....

I thought it would be some sort of laser. Similar to that mass accelerator that destroyed that Reaper near Klendagon.

I had no idea what it was going to be before it was completed and, frankly, I have no idea what it did afterwards either.
And the more I think about it, the more questions I have about the Crucible which may end up as a thread in the near future...

I thought it was like some massive off switch, which using the mass relays as a conduit (just like the game) would send this "switch off" signal around the galaxy. Thus enabling the reapers to be destroid my conventional fire power.

After we learned about the Reaper Code at Sanctuary, I expected that to have a huge part in the ending. Whoops

Man...I guess I am the odd-man out or idiot.
I thought it was going to be a weapon. A weapon that can destroy the reapers in one shot. You know, kind of what they alluded to.
Now, I had a feeling it was going to fail or not work and your War Assets had to come into play, but I still thought that this thing was going to be a weapon.
Not space magic.
