David has recovered from PAX East and returned to the forums. Hello again David!

He's answering questions in the other thread and I noticed something interesting.

David Gaider wrote...

That's a good question. They didn't have a model originally because we didn't have time to make one. They may certainly have such in the future, however, as may other new classes of demons.

New classes of demons?!

What could it mean?

They possibly need stronger monsters because Hawke was made too 1337-sauce?

Seriously, all they need to do is make characters weaker.

I assume he's talking about the sloth demon with the model comment but others would most likely be greed and envy since they are pretty much following the model of seven mortal sins being represented by a class of demons.

I thought he meant demons that weren't inspired by the seven cardinal sins.

Demon of Patricide
Demon of Slander
Demon of Treachery
Demon of Stealing the Last Thin Mint

Greed and envy are covered by the Hunger demon - envy being a coveting of (or a metaphorical hunger for) what someone else possesses, while greed is a hungering for just plain more - hence why it's not called a Gluttony demon. So it seems more likely to be other, less obvious, negative traits.

As long as it's not the last Rolo, I'm good.

I'd like to see opposite sex models, and more variation in general, for demons and spirits that we've already seen. Probably won't be a huge priority for the team, but it'd be cool. I feel like the classes of demon we've already seen cover fairly broad areas, so I'd be curious as to what they come up with.

That's how I've always interpretted it as well, however there is some room for severability if they wanted to expand the hunger demon into three different classifications for the sake of enemy diversity. Desire is sort of mushy as well because while their appearance goes to lust some of the experiences with them do not. The exiled prince one, for example tempted Lady Harrimon's envy.

Towards Maria. I'm not sure what they meant but what you listed would be demons for actions where the motivation would already be covered. Patricide for example would most likely be an act of wrath, or possible envy I guess, but either way the motivation already has a designated trait. I suppose we'll have to just wait and see but trying to inject something into a set of qualities that pretty much every civilization has coalesced around, and which provides the basic framework from which this franchise draws heavily seems like a quagmire that may be best avoided.

You're assuming that demons have to be tied to a specific motivation. That hasn't been 'specified as a designated trait.' That's how the Chantry breaks them down.

Right now, we have spirits that cover a wide range of concepts, and demons that cover seven. Unless there's something specific about those concepts in Thedas that makes them demonic, there's no reason for the limitation.

MAYBE THEY COULD HAVE A DESPAIR DEMON THAT'S POWERED BY THE FEAR THAT ALL LIVING CREATURES HAVE OF THEIR INEVITABLE DEATH AND DECAY.

BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, THERE ARE STILL THINGS FOR THE DRAGON AGE DEVS TO RIP OFF FROM THE 40K UNIVERSE.

As stated by Justice in Awakening, the distinction between demon and spirit seems to be the desire to cross the Veil and influence the material realm physically.

Demon of Missing Socks.

Will be interesting to see an increase in demons though I'm not sure how it'd work out you have the initial base emotions going on and then Lint Demon, Slightly Miffed Demon, followed by Demon of Rude Awakening don't really carry off the presense required of them.

"The Sith rely on their passion for their strength. They think inward, only about themselves... The Jedi are selfless. They care only about others."

Demons are spirits of self interest. Sloth, Pride, Desire, Rage. The other spirits personify concepts that are unconcerned with self. Justice, for instance, is a spirit of the enforcement of equality, who then becomes corrupted by the emotions and inward focus of a human mage.

He was referring to hunger demons, actually.

But I'd be interested in seeing new demons as well.

I don't know what it means, but I was super excited when I read Mr. Gaider's post. The possibilities!

True, though that doesn't contradict the fact that all demons encountered thus far want out of the Fade. In fact, near enough every demon that bothers to have a conversation with you, explicitly states as much.

I was actually agreeing with you and then expanding upon it.

Well, in that case, carry on.

I think it would be interesting to see if a spirit of a selfless trait - like Justice (as opposed to Vengeance) - that wanted to affect the world physically would be considered a demon. Or if the Chantry would change their stance on the inhabitants of the Fade and allow such spirits free roam.

More importantly: Will we EVER see a skimpy-outfitted sexy dude Desire Demon like originally planned for back in DA:O?

Also, more female and ambiguous voices for demons like Pride and Sloth would be nice. Seems like every demon is a dude or cannot be a lady unless it has boobs.

It does not interest me much, sadly. Demons are usually just another type of enemy for the player to destroy. What the writers do with them in DA3 is more important to me than expanding variety. What I would like to see is a demon that plays a longer game than "possess person > enter the physical world > profit!" One that bucks their categorized nature or puts an interesting and less suicidal spin on it.

As matters stand, demons are among the most "mwahaha! I'm evil!" antagonists in Dragon Age. Even when cajoling or deceiving, there is a malevolent undertone to them. The DA writers painted some gray on the demon/spirit canvas with Anders and Merrill's stories, but I want to see them take that much further.

New types are not needed to accomplish that.

They still have yet to give the already existent Hunger demons a proper form.

Since Malvernis was Pestilence, I suppose we can have War, Famine, and Death too. (though I'm aware this quartet is apparently apocryphal)

Personally I've always thought there was one fade demon type for one fade spirit type.

Rage for Justice
Sloth for Fortitude
Pride for Faith
Hunger for Compassion
Desire for Charity

This combination of fan speculation and tenuous associations is all the proof I need that there are other classes of demon.
