Playing as a mage is like playing Guild Wars.

Dragon Age is supposed to be the spiritual predecessor to Baldur's Gate, right?

So why does this game play more like Guild Wars then?

Right now I have 6 spells all lined up in my quick bar. Because I can't queue up orders, I'm simply tapping the numbers and watching the little icons spin around. When the cool-downs wear off I just tap the numbers again. This isn't a little bit like Guild Wars, it is EXACTLY like Guild Wars.

There's virtually no strategy needed here at all?

When I play Baldur's Gate I need to think strategically - I need to figure out which spells need to be cast and in what order; I need to figure out which characters need to be pre-buffed heading into certain fights; I also need to have the right party balance, and I need to equip that party adequately. I'm not seeing any of that here.

Playing as a mage I'm just clicking buttons in a sequence that I can actually memorize. Click 1. Click 2. Click 3. Click 4. Click 5. Okay, 2 is ready again - click that. 1 is good to go again - click that. 4 is ready - click that. Click 1. Click 5. I'm not actually being forced to strategize at all - all I'm doing is waiting for cool-downs to cycle through?

Honestly, I'm kind of shocked by this.

From where I sit, NWN2 is much closer to being the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate - and Dragon Age is actually a step in the opposite direction. I'm not saying I'm not having fun here, because I am, but this is NOT what I was expecting.

Does the game become strategic later on? I'm only about six hours in, but I haven't really had to think yet? I mean, a five-year-old kid could excel at this? My hope is that at some point strategy is going to start to play a part - but the one thing I can say is that early on, the combat is quite a disappointment. Was this done to help transition new players into the game?

(And please don't tell me to readjust the difficulty slider, because that's obviously not going to change the dynamics of the combat - I mean, it is what is, right.)
