What must I do in order to get all character appearances like Wrex, Thane, Legion and stuff? Do I have to play ME2 or something?

When you get the descions at the beggining of Me2 you have to make sure wrex survies virmire.
as for everybody else you have to make sure they make it back from the sucide mission

Still, if you haven't played ME1 and 2, having those characters in your ME3 almost means nothing because there will be many past-related reference in dialogues. Also less emotional attachment to the characters. The story is less fked up though. I can guarantee you on that.
