Was the size of zones restricted by technical issues or design?

Just curious about the question above , love DA but the only real criticism I have is the size of the zones if that was caused only by design could we see much larger zones in future DLC/expansions ?

Design. It's how Bioware likes to make their games. Zones are only as large as needed to tell a story.

I think they're perfect. If they get too big, I start to get annoyed. The worst thing Diablo 2 did was to make zones that were stupidly bigger than diablo 1. It became tedious.
When questing for the urn, the thing that kept it tolerable was that it was broken up into smaller chunks that allowed you to keep feeling like you were almost done, even though overall it was really long.
Same with the mage tower. X number of floors instead of one big long crawl with a ton of branches is way preferable to me.
