I think that as a Grey Warden you operate on the patronage of the nobles or the king so if you need supplies it is very similar in how it works in the Dalish camp where the merchant (can not remember his name) will let you open and remove supplies from the chest behind him. But the game starts you out as a pariah in Feraldin, no patrons, no money, no support system, essentially the Grey Wardens do not exist in Feraldin except for you and Allister. Even if you start out as the human noble the money you think you should have is going to be to bulky to carry, to noisy to conceal, and for the most part unnecessary as King Calain is your patron that is until he is squished like a ketchup packet at Ostagar.

Honestly the lack of powerful equipment I can understand. Magical arms and armor wouldn't be that common even for nobles, and your father and brother just marched off to war, they probably took all the good stuff with them, leaving you with whatever was adequate for staying in what was presumed to be a safe location.
I think the biggest failure is you being outfitted in leather armor as a warrior, instead of splintmail at the least, or more likely, heavy or massive armor. A suit of fancy but not-particularly-functional platemail like the dwarf nobles get.

I'm more concerned with materials. Dragon age has ..what 7-8 of them? That by itself is redicolous allready (I'ts like having copper, bronze, iron, crap steel, quality steel and ****offium swords all used in the same time period).

You start with the lowest qualtiy equipment posible? IRON? Given all the other materials available, iron would be something for pesants!

There is a "treasure pile" when you leave the werewolf lair which had a single spirit shard in it. Huge mound of gold and gems on the ground that when I click on it gives me a single spirit shard. WTF really?

Loot bothers me greatly so I just cheat gold now. Played it legit two complete runs and I no longer like the pauper vs the world game.
