It seemed Mac Walters was convinced the ending turned the galaxy into a wasteland

Wow. Why in the world is this guy lead writer?

Has he written for anything else?

He was hired because he created a module for Neverwinter Nights that was very well-received by BioWare. His first project with BioWare was Jade Empire in 2005, followed by ME1 in 2007.

Yes, you heard that right. They hired a fan and made him the lead writer of their flagship franchise with only 2 1/2 games of professional writing experience.

I have more writing experience then he does. Good GOD.

I have  two degrees in literature and writing! GOOD GOD WHY!?

My film reviews and screenwriting mean nothing to Mac Walters apparently. Nor does having one the top search results in google for some writing I did on a director mean anything either.

Someone derped and derped hard.

This makes me sad....

COME PATSY! (Hope you get the referance, haha)

I would build a large wooden rabbit in protest if I could and was able to ship it.

Oh and doing PR for one of the most controversial films of the last decade doesn't give me PR experience either.

OH GOD WHY.

Well, please keep in mind that even after destroying the Reapers

Nearly all colonies have been destroyed or devastated, the Batarians are practically extinct, all other fleets suffered heavy losses.
So even if the Relays did not destroy everything, the galaxy is still pretty much a wasteland. Would not put too much emphasize on his words, it depends on how you define wasteland.

Not to mention the fact that the Krogan, Geth, or Quarians could be faced with extinction, depending on your choices.

Damn it Mac! Things were bitter before the ending even started!

There isn't even a bloody dove in Mass Effect 3's ending. No hope. Mr. Walters has achieved something I could have done in middle school. Write a story a story deprived of hope because I was angry at the world. The lack of maturity in his writing is appalling. I find the lack of proper education very VERY troubling here.

"So you're finished, huh?"

"Yeah..."

"It's too bad Mass Effect wont live!"

"But then again, who does under EA!?"

Also, I wrote better endings in sixth grade writing class.

It's immature and I want them to know that. I find their ending to be morally unacceptable. It's repulsive, angry and absolutely unesscessary in any context, especially in today's world. In a series about hope they really dropped the ball here. Being dark does NOT reflect maturity, it reflects the authors inability to manage emotions in the audience. This is the "If I kill everyone I can create a deep message." It's a sign of bad writing and it lacks any sort of level headedness.

It breaks down to this.

Red = Mass Genocide

Green = Mass Rape

Blue = Mass Slavery

Goes against the entire space operatic theme.

When Tolkien was ready to release the first book in his new trilogy "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring", he moved into print a new copy of his already popular book The Hobbit with a heavily edited "Riddles in the Dark" chapter, to more seamlessly bridge the two works.

Tolkien had no artistic integrity, which is why in 60 years no one will remember him. But we'll totally be talking about Bioware and Mass Effect.

Yeah people will be taking lessons in how not to write trilogies based on this, haha.

Tolkien spent decades building his story and the lore surrounding it, and was always making adjustments. Not because he had no artistic integrity, but because he was changing things to make his story better.

well to be fair even if you could destroy only the reapers and keep relays intact, the universe is still pretty much f*cked up. Every citadel species homeworld is a burning husk, most of the other planets were also hit more or less. An aftermath of the this war can be clasified as a wasteland.

Which was probably why no one was worried about the game's ending at the time. I was expecting a certain amount of screwed up after the ending. Just, a helluva lot less than what we got...

I'm pretty convinced the galaxy post-Reapers is totally a wasteland. The amount of mental gymnastics and hand-waving you have to do to convince yourself that "it's still good, it's still good" is too much.

Interstellar travel and communication sans mass relays is entirely impractical, borderline infeasible.

According to Mirriam-Weber's online dictionary:

Wasteland - noun:

1: barren or uncultivated land <a desert wasteland>

2: an ugly often devastated or barely inhabitable place or area

3: something (as a way of life) that is spiritually and emotionally arid and unsatisfying
I kid you not on number three. Seems like the ending did actually cover the whole definition... Image IPB

I got a wild idea that would put peoples mind to rest.

All the populated planets are in ruins, even if the ending took place in Shepard's mind... The planets are still unable to be salvaged but!
What if they did a sort've twist and had older races that were sleeping to avoid the Reapers all wake up cause of the threat being eliminated.
OR
Have that beam that kills the Reapers (only if you choose kill) changed all the indoctrinated enemies back to what they were before, Husks and other creatures. Obviously they'd have to be alive still but that would make things a little less gloomy.

Either way they could then open it up to finding new species that were either changed to husks or awoke after the Reapers were destroyed. Then expand more on who created Reapers and dark energy and what not.

BUT because of the poorly written ending, were still damned if we do and damned if we don't.:pinched:

Too tired to read all the posts, but if you look at the "Final Hours" app, you also see notes which show that Mr. Walters planned a "galactic dark age," after the relay explosions...which to me signal no more FTL, and a stranded Victory Fleet...and starvation....

Please explain to me how a "galactic dark age," does not equal any of these horrible outcomes...how is reverting to the Dark Ages in any way "bittersweet?" We survive, but most of us left will die of the Pox...or whatever...

Actually, if it equalized galactic populations, and the tech could be rebuilt, I suppose I could see a silver lining. But that's still at odds with a Dark Age.

And with Sylv it was much the same.

She wrote some of the best parts of me3 along with jdom and patrick.

Book != Cover.

Blowing up shepard was a bad idea. Cutting Legion's rescue of shep's body to be re-"rescued" by cerberus was a bad idea. Horizon made no sense. Having tali, who had been with me for five seconds after Haestrom unravel the entire issue with collectors and how they were going to stuff 11 billion people into a single cruiser in three sentences made no sense AND was a bad idea.

Sorry, but the writing was on the wall way before Three. All you have to do is take the nostalgia glasses off.

In fairness the guy who made Garrus and Wrex awesome in 1 was Walters as well.

There is no black and white, all or nothing.

Guys, there's no need to attack Mac's lack of degrees. Having more literature degrees does not make you an instantly better writer.

I agree with many of the sentiments that are saying that a dark ending is not necessarily the "better" or "more mature/intellectual" ending. But it seems a teensy bit hypocritical to me if you then say that he is not a mature writer because he doesn't have a CV full of degrees.

Basically, he may or may not be a great writer, but neither his choice of a dark ending nor his lack of degrees determines his maturity or talent.

He could easily be referring to the damage the reapers did during their invasion, they probably turned a lot of places into wastelands.
