In my full playthrough of ME1 to ME3 I romanced Ashley in ME1, but then when it came to the point where you decide who lives or dies I chose Ashley, so my love interest was killed. This seemed to fit my background choices of Colonist / Sole Survivor, where everyone he cares for dies. Then in ME2 Jack came along that seemed to be a perfect match for those background choices, so I romanced her through ME2 and ME3. Jack is such an interesting character, I don't understand all the forum hate for her.
