Baldur's Gate
Ultima Underworld
Ultima IV

Really, is it too much to ask to get an RPG without a Kill Foozle plot?

Fallout - oozes atmosphere, style, wit, and humor.
Baldur's Gate 2 - truly epic.
Knights of the Old Republic - got everything that was right about Star Wars.
Knights of the Old Republic 2 - brilliant, brilliant writing. KotOR is the better game but I actually like KotOR 2 more.
Planescape: Torment - Morte, Fall-From-Grace, Annah, Dakkon et al.,... Ravel.
Baldur's Gate - Nostalgia for the Infinity Engine progenitor.
Fallout 2 - This time, Ian doesn't shoot you in the back.
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines - The Haunted Hotel is the best quest design ever.
Mass Effect - pretty slick soundtrack.

Dragon Age is definitely on my top ten. Let time determine just exactly where.

Planescape: Torment, even though I just can't bring myself to complete it again. Incredible story and twist, lots of interesting things to discover, interacting with NPCs that isn't 100% dialogue, lots of situations that feel incredibly rewarding and you don't always have to fight to be rewarded the most (in fact, fighting every 2 seconds often leads to the least beneficial outcomes), but still has a fun combat system.

And most of all, the completely over-the-top high-level spell effects, completely with .bik cinematics when you unleash them.

I just about crapped my pants when I fired my first Meteor Swarm.

Neverwinter Nights 1 for its endless adventures.

Baldur's Gate series for still the best plot and story.

I'd post Planescape: Torment as well, but after all this time, I still have not finished it yet.

not to rain on your parade but isn't there already a thread like this in the Off-Topic forum? where a thread like this belongs?

My favorite: Baldur's Gate II and Shenmue are tied for first.

I haven't played Dragon Age long enough for me to consider it one of my favorites. Ask me again in a year.

Baldur's Gate II - Great storyline and characters and my first 'proper' intro to RPGs.
Morrowind - Immense world with unique cultures and exploration.
Oblivion - Beautiful world with lots to explore.
NWN - Loved the expansions and numerous mods and co-op play.
and most likely... Dragon Age:Origins :wizard:

1) Final Fantasy (Most of them)

Because after a certain point the game was very opened ended with tons of exploration and adventures. You could beat the game at a certain level, but if you wanted to take out some of the super tough bosses like Omega Weapons (for example) you needed to grind your characters up and pimp them out. All worth the effort to me.

2) Fallout

What else can I say, those post apocolyptic games were just plain fun.

3) Dragon Age Origins

There are a lot of good things about this game, and I love it even after playing it multiple times. My biggest gripe is that it is scripted right down to the core. I dont need to max my characters out in terms of level 99. I would like more challenging side quests, ability to grind mobs to make more money to pimp my characters out the way I would like, and most of all..... This game would freaking own as an MMO. Players working together to defend against a blight and archdemons. I can see the possibilities and potential.

In no special order.

Morrowind
- Great setting, loved the story and houses/factions, loved the freedom to explore and enchanting items and spell creation
VtM: Bloodlines - Malk's dialogue options...good story too, decent VA for the time
NWN: HoTU - Best story of all the NWN (BW) campaigns, 3.5 rules, epic levels and prestige classes, amazing mods available at this time
Fallout2 - Great setting, love the humor, dig the premise, interesting combat system
Chrono Trigger - Good story, great characters, loved the multiple endings, new game +, combo system
Mass Effect - Amazing presentation, awesome story, great VA, rich and interesting backstory\\lore
DA:O - Rich and interesting world\\lore, amazing characters, top notch VA, tons of party interaction and dialogue

I still need to pick up copies of BG and BG2 sometime, and finish The Witcher which I have owned but never opened for a couple of years now.

Ultima 4 and 5

Baldur's Gate 2

Morrowind

And I spent an insane number of hours on Bard's Tale 1 and 2 on Commodore 64! classics! But thinking back now, I can't believe I was engulfed by something so shallow.

My opinion?

Planescape: Torment. That story was incredible, and the characters were some of the most memorable I have ever played. I mean, who doesn't love Mort?

Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. Carrying on the story of the first, and feeling like I was in fact a demi god.

The whole Fallout Series. I love the setting, and the story was a great deal of fun, particularly in the first two. The third was not my favorite, but still loved it.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. Wow. As someone said above, the Haunted Hotel was so damn awesome. Also, talking stop signs.

Final Fantasy 7. Great plot, characters, music, perfect length. Nothing even comes close to it for me, I'm afraid.

Like thoses, Bloodlines haunted hotel actually scared the **** out of me, and isn't an  area that you can simple get used to.

I also liked Neverwinter Nights, though I've been wanting to RP with some friends through the entire campaigns.
*Has been wanting to actually complete NWN2, no chance yet.*

Torment - easily the best western RPG ever made. I still rattle off plot points when drunk at parties.

BG / BG II - ate far too much of my life

KOTOR - About to start a new game of this with my 7 year old, if for no other reason than any 7 year old Star Wars fan needs to meet HK-47.

NWN - Wasn't great at launch, and the original campaign was, well, disappointing. After expansions and community work, became a jewel.

Fallout - Only game i have played through more than this is Torment. Genius.

and from the old days...

Wizard's Crown - Fantastic Apple II RPG. Still remember being extremely pissed off at the wardpact demons at the end.

Ultima IV - First time me and my old childhood friends ever stayed up 24 hours straight was playing this game. Our parents laughed at us :)

Phantasy Star - first RPG I've ever played, most expensive game at release; hard as hell, so many dungeons.

Final Fantasy VII - need I elaborate?

Final Fantasy X - Damage limits 99,999

Baldur's Gate II - All in all the best RPG ever.

Ultima VII - For me the greatest RPG at its time. A wonderful living world with people all having their own daily routine like getting up in the morning, opening the shutters of their homes, doing their jobs like baking bread, forging swords or tilling fields etc. An open world with night and day, wheather like rain and thunder, where you could travel with your whole party on a carriage, on a ship (fighting sea monsters) or even in the air on a magic carpet. You could also do small things like sitting on a chair, sleeping in a bed or use an empty bucket, fill it with water at a well, then use it with flour and an oven to bake your own bread and then eat it. And if you were getting hungry on your travels, you could go in the woods hunting deers for example to get some tasty meat. Of course it also had a great story etc. pp, but I especially remember the small things like this farmer on whose field a space ship from "Wing Commander" had crashed and where you could get a "hoe of destruction" because of this accident...or the meldody which was played when entering the throne room of Lord British, "Rule Britannia"...ah. memories. :)

I think what was so utterly brilliant about the haunted hotel in Bloodlines was the way that they were trying to tell a story without dialogue. You get visual clues as to what happened and the suspense and fear of what's around the next corner is literally keeping you wired.

I would definitely like to see Bioware, Obsidian or some other developer try and create a level that so boldly goes for something so radically different. Very...System Shock 2ish.
