Baldur's Gate 2 - Best story, characters, and epic gameplay

Chrono Cross - A dream-like quality I haven't seen before, truly incredible music

Final Fantasy IX - great mixture of playfulness and seriousness in a story. best game system, i thought

Final Fantasy VIII - It was a romance, and a great one. in that aspect, whatever story elements fell to the side, it was king.

KOTOR 2 - incredibly well written.

Super Mario RPG - A surprisingly fun and satisfying game. Plenty of secrets to uncover, outstanding graphics for its time, and I don't even know why, but I remember thinking Geno was soo coool. :)

Chrono Trigger - There is so little about this game that I actually dislike. From the epic scope of the storyline (preventing apocalypse not just in your time but in ALL times), to the music, to the innovation (Gasp! Enemies you can see as you approach them!), to all the little things - the trial, Lucca's mom, the Triple-Techs, deciding Magus' fate, the cute little mini-games at the festival - it is truly, IMO, one of the greatest games of all time, and certainly pushed the SNES to its limits. Only major complaint: silent spiky-haired protagonist whyyyy? So generic are you and your stoic ilk.

FFIV & VI - I have fond memories of both games, for different reasons. FFIV was such a simple, classic tale of heroes prevailing against seemingly impossible odds, with a fair dash of betrayal, redemption, and sacrifice thrown into the mix. And I <3 bards, spoony or otherwise. ^_^ FFVI had, IMHO, pretty much the best character development and cast interactions up until DA:O. The mid-game twist, the excitement of tracking down your scattered allies, deciding whether or not to wait for Shadow, again, the music, the innovation of Materia, the craziness of Kefka, the cuteness of moogles...love it all.

Star Ocean 2 - A very different combat system, the option to play as a boy OR a girl, colorful animations, an interesting cosmology, different recruitable characters, depending on choices, and a focus on relationships made for a fun, unique game with a decent replay value.

Neverwinter Nights - Dragon Age forum means Dragon Age comparisons, I guess; NWN was probably the last RPG before this one that I was so amped about buying right after it came out. I absorbed a ridiculous amount of Realmslore in high school, and I still return to Faerun periodically, so this game was an absolute must-have in my book. So many quests and side-quests. For those curious, I didn't have a modern enough computer in the BG/BGII/Planescape:Torment era of things. NWN didn't really address the romance angle, tho, so DA:O wins out.

An honorable mention also goes to Romancing SaGa and SaGa Frontier. I love collecting fellow adventurers and types of magic and saving the world in a non-linear fashion. A lot of people were creeped out by the big-eyed, somewhat marionette-ish art style of Romancing SaGa, but I thought it was cute, and the variety of different stories you could tell more than made up for it anyway. Also, the music was AMAZING! I've used it as BGM for tabletop D&D games to, I feel, great effect.

1.Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords
Although many people say KOTOR1 is the superior game I have to disagree. The sequel raised the bar somewhat, the influence system, the characters, the story and interaction was what made the game great. PLus it had some of the best villains and anti-heros in a game ever.
2.Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
The background from WoD is what made this game rich and the different clans added to the replayability. It was also one of those RPGs which was quite morally ambiguous which was a nice change. Plus the facial and body expressions were quite innovative for that time
3.Neverwinter Nights
After the sprite era of RPGs, this was pretty amazing and the BioWare specialty of storytelling made this game awesome. It had so many different options for character builds and the online aspect of it rivaled Diablo 2.
4.The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
What made the TES games so popular is the vastness of the world just ready to explore. And like Crysis, Oblivion was the very defintion of rich and detailed graphics of that time. It also had a unique character levelling system, an alternative to the old D&D system.
5.Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscrua
Even though it's quite old,the concept of Arcanum was quite original and the steampunk feel along with the different inventions you could create made the game creative.
