And the social site does nothing really. But you need to register the game on here to get certain perks.

It's supposed to make it easier to find custom content for the PC version of the game, since it has a section dedicated to the DA Toolset, and an entire portion of the site is set aside for game modding projects.

You mean features specific to the games you register here? I like the way the social site goes beyond the games. People can socialize among friends and get connected with new people. Those are good extra features I think.
you could have done that on the old forums!

Exactly. and some people (meaning "I") prefer the format of the old forums.
This social site was ostensibly created as a site for us to come and socialize and facilitate community. But the real purpose is closer to what the thread starter said in the first post. It's to gather data, and help with DLC.

As more games get involved (Mass Effect 2, for example) I think the site will seem like a more viable alternative to say going on Gamefaqs and other forums. Since you get to see the raw data of players.
While this occurs, you are doing it under the EA/Bioware banner. So their name is the back of your mind
But I think it has more to do with keeping their name in mind. And I wouldn't surprised if other EA owned companies start getting similar treatment. If they haven't.

The way socializing is done here is much more dynamic and, IMO, provides better service.
As for another issue, you can prevent game data do be sent if you choose to, though EA/BioWare wouldn't be the only company offering free service in exchange of marketing information.
