However, it seems a bit over the top for too many NPCs to mention how gorgeous the main character is.

A romanced Fenris is the only one I can think of who's ever commented on my Hawke's physical appearance.  Who else is there?

Varric mentions that Hawke is a beautiful woman, and then Fenris, like you've mentioned. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Varric also says that Aveline is a virtuous shield maiden and Bethany has huge bazangas.

And he was right.

Every time I see this thread the old TLC song Unpretty starts running through my head. Thanks a lot, OP. Thanks a lot.

Sorry, I should've expressed myself more clearly. I meant I wouldn't want too many characters to comment on the looks of my character, especially if that means being called ugly or gorgeous too many times.

Ehr... I'm not quite sure if this is more clear. I'm not sure how to word my feelings on the matter.
But I don't think being called attractive too often was an issue with Hawke at all.

I do like D&D's set of mental stats, Wisdom-Intelligence-Charisma, better than DA's Willpower-Magic-Cunning. It seems like D&D's have more practical implications on your character from a roleplaying perspective, to be drawn on for actual variations in dialog. Like in NWN how you could have 8 INT and all your dialog would be simple. Or how high Int or Wis would let your character discern the correct answers to questions or have certain insights. Or how charisma would be used to gauge general "attractiveness" (though you could still get any LI regardless). Whereas in DA, Willpower and Magic don't seem to bear much consequence, personality-wise, leaving Cunning to approximate the other three mental stats of D&D. Inadequately, I'd say. (Willpower could be argued, but it seems like the concept of willpower is too crucial for your typical "hero story" to convincingly vary dialog to account for "low willpower," but I could be wrong about that.)

Maybe they didn't want the faculties of the character to be defined by RPG stats so as to leave it up to the player to imagine, but this does seem to limit the extent that the game can ever make any references to said faculties... it can only ever be related to a dialog choice you just chose that was dumb or charismatic.

I suppose they could have a whole system metering these types of characteristics based on dialog choices, but that doesn't sound like a good idea...

I'm more then happy to 'splore this. I'm sick to death of the PC being this epic-uber-unstoppable-badarse whose got divine levels of beauty to boot.

We need an Attractiveness stat. Or trait.

Something like Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines would be nice.

This is what I too immediately thought of after reading OP´s post, but in contrast to Dragon Age social and mental stats play a huge role in Bloodlines whereas stats and abilities are only used for fighting in DA.
In Bloodlines you can get through quests by seducing, persuading, bewitching, etc. people while Dragon Age is much more focused on fighting - and in the few cases where there are alternatives there are tied to the different personality types or simply acting differently (like breaking in at night to avoid guards), so no need for extra stats.

I like the concept of the idea, but I think Dragon Age is the wrong game to implement it.
Appearance is just too unimportant to warrant implementing a system that measures it.
There need to be more than two or three mentions about it to make it worthwhile, and people constantly referring to it would be very weird.
If the game designers would go down a path where they plan to include stats outside of fighting I´m all for it, but if I remember right (I don´t necerssarily do) it´s been stated they want to keep stats entirely combat related.

Now people reacting differently in dialogue to you nationality or gender, (finding Ferelden´s unatrractive/weird by default or being sexist against men for example)  yes please.
These are scripted events that don´t require stats but are still tied to your character.

The problem with referring to your character as 'ugly' in a game where you can create your character's face is - well, let's put it this way. What if you make a character that looks exactly like you, and then the game's math decides you're ugly?

A single tear.

Dude, if you guys make a character creator good enough that I can actually make a character who looks EXACTLY like me, I will be OVERJOYED.

Meh I'm ugly enough in real life, let me play a young Marlon Brando avatar where women flock to me like the salmon of capistrano!

heh, on a more serious note I'm incredibly handsome in real life.

On a game related note I like the idea of not playing the chosen one in every game and playing a semi-normal guy in the right place at the right time. I say semi normal because I enjoy playing an idealized version of a normal guy who is above average but not transcening being human. This includes looks.

I can remember when Origins came out, someone posted a youtube clip of the love scene between Zevran and the most unattractive Dwarf Warden he could construct, just to troll.

Zevran, undoubtedly, shrugged and muttered 'I've had worse.' afterwards.

I can remember NPCs in Neverwinter Nights frequently commenting on the PC's appearance (even though the model used could be anything) if the PC had low charisma stats. Though it was a cute addition, I don't think I'd want to see that in DA.

I don't recall anyone swooning over Hawke's beauty. If you're regular looking, most people won't comment on it.

Are you serious? As a gay guy who played a mage male Hawke, I found him to be extremely sexy! The cool hair, the masculine face and the hot body were all positives to me. Shame about the inconsistencies of using the dialogue wheel and the tones... I never felt I was a cohesive person, more of a mesh of various personalities molded into a schizophrenic.

Yeah, it couldn't really hurt to add charisma back in - be fun to have people commenting on your character's attractiveness or lack thereof (maybe tie it in with persuasion too if it makes a return).

Having a stat for attractiveness doesn't work when you are able to create your own face. Isn't this completely obvious?

But that's what would make it AWESOME!  Seriously. Image IPB

Someone like Morrigan would look at some of these Wardens and be like, "The dog is prettier than you.  And smarter than Alistar."  I see nothing but win here.

Tbh i dont think it would work because it would mak everything so unrealistic. The Hero is amazing and so beautiful and this and that blah blah blah. It would seem a little one dimensional.

You could make it a trait or similar.

Kind of like how in NWN everyone treats you like a simpleton if you have an intelligence of  6 or less. I loved that.
