Picked this up a few days ago for a cheap price. Finally finishing my DA:O character after not touching him for a long time, and I have to wonder before going into the sequel....what should I expect? There's a lot of both positive and negative stuff floating around and I'm not sure if I should brace myself for suck upon starting the game.

Just don't go into it expecting it to be much like the Origins experience. The game feels fundamentally different. I think it's a decent enough game, but no where near the caliber of Origins.
But there are a lot of people who prefer DA2, it just depends on what kind of games you like.

All in all, it is fun game. Don't expect DAO2.

Expect life in a single city, good companions and being integral in big events in the city, if in a subtle indirect way.

Leave all expectations at the door. This game is it's own and has no ties to its predecessor other than canon. (even that is debatable.)
If you are to purchase any dlc content, make it the Black Emporium so you can respec your characters at the very least. It also provides you a mabari.
I would also suggest you utilize the tactics link in my signature as things have changed a little and there are a few bugs still in the system even after 4 patches. (I do not believe it spoils anything story wise)

The game isn't a bad RPG (although looking at current RPG market, it isn't saying much). It was just a massive disappointment after playing a great RPG like Origins. I just wish Bioware found a happy medium between fast flowing combat, storytelling and game mechanics. Unfortunately DA2 failed in several regards.

The game is great, just don't expect Origins 2.0. Don't expect much and you'll love it. And oh, the areas are recycled. Just so you know before you head into it.

Just keep an open mind. I had the same attitude like you when I first got it but I ended up enjoying it
